Guard The Yard
This will always be one of favorite defensive drills to simulate guarding the ball. The philosophy behind it is to guard three feet to the left and three feet to the right. This is a great drill for the defensive player to work on keeping the ball in front of them
Coach MJ Baker has built her program at Eastern Florida into one of the top in all of junior college basketball. Here she shares some defensive principles that she teaches to her team. A great reminder to always see the player you are guarding and the basketball and great example
In this 2 Player 3 Ball Moving Ball Handling drill it shows the progression handling the in a stationary position before passing the

to your teammate and switching spots. Our goal here is to be under control when we are on the move
3 Player Fill Passing
I needed a drill to teach players how to move without the basketball and then to be able to make the extra pass once they do catch the basketball
This drill done here with some younger players incorporates those skills and more for a rep of 10 to 15 seconds
Team Triangle Passing
Here is a great drill that works on many concepts. It begins with lines at the left wing, top of the key, and right wing. The player at the top of the key drives into the paint with their eyes on the rim - lands on 2 feet, and passes the ball.
#basketball
Here Paolo Banchero works with Chuma Okeke in a Partner Passing and Ball Handling sequence. Each player begins with a basketball taking two pounds before making a bounce pass to the same side hand of their partner.
This drill is excellent to do for your skills development.
Pro Cone Ball Handling with Pull Ups - here the players use a chop between the legs maneuvering forward and backward thru the cones.
When the player returns to their starting point they push the ball up the floor and then attack for a pull up jumper on the wing.
Triangle Ball Handling with an attack move is part of Small Area Ball Handling Series. This drill incorporates keeping your head on a swivel while changing direction and pace. In this sequence we build an attack move in at the end to beat the simulated defender.
Guard The Yard
One of my favorite defensive fundamental drills! The defense has the mentality that they must guard 3 feet to the left and 3 feet to the right.
If they can do that their is a good chance they will keep the offensive player in front of them in game situations!
This “Pullback Series” is one of my favorite ways to use a drill to work on the pull back. We begin by engaging the defender which is the chair in this drill. I encourage players to use pace and change speeds as they create space and look to attack.
#Basketball
Here is a progression to “Pound and Protect”. The defense will use their basketball to try to knock the ball from the offensive player. The ball handler must use his off hand to protect the basketball and then recover to their pound position.
#basketball
Triangle Ball Handling is one of my favorite small area drills. Easy to do by starting with your right or left hand.
Keys include:
- Change of Direction
-Change of Pace
Add Variables such as:
-Combinations
-Scoring Moves
-Competitive Play
Coach Bob Huggins on playing time:
We got some guys on the bench pouting a bit. I tell them in the locker room at halftime - I don't decide your playing time, you do. I don't play guys because I like them. I play guys because they produce.
In this sequence of Triangle Ball Handling watch how the players handle the ball compact, have their head on a swivel, and change directions. After the triangle is complete,They finish off their repetition with an explosive inside out.

The best shooting drills are the ones that simulate game situations. 3 Shot Continuous Shooting consists of a spot up shot, a pull up jumper, and a pop for a shot. I love doing this series with groups of 3 players and making 25 shots from each side of the court!
Yesterday I shared a basic drill between Paolo Banchero and his teammate Chuma Okeke. Today we see the progression with a more challenging drill. They use two pound dribbles before making a behind the back pass.
Hand eye coordination, timing, and trust make this go!
Triple Threat Fundamentals are a big part of the game. Here we are working on a combination using an “Arch” and a “Sweep”.
These movements are often made in games especially vs. a closeout or an on ball defender. My goal is that they become reactionary skills
Want to improve your non dominant hand? Try this! I call it “Directional Ball Handling” and the player is demonstrating this going to their left. It’s very simple shuffle to the left and then shuttle back to your starting point. We then repeat this over 10 to 15 secs.
#basketball
Today in my workout one of the first things we did was “JJ Redick shooting”. It’s one of my favorite form shooting drills as we step into the basketball with our one-two step and shoot the basketball with one hand. Here we shoot from right inside the foul line area. This drill
Memphis Closeouts
Here is a great 3 on 3 drill that works on offensive and defensive principles including:
Defense - Closeouts, Jumping to ball, Help position
Offense - ball reversals, spacing, reading the defense
Want more details on this drill? Send me a DM!

Reaction Shooting with Ball Handling - here you will see a different ball handling sequence done before a pass is made. The player will then receive a pass back from their teammate for a game shot.
“Shooting is confidence”
I love this quote that University of Tampa Head Coach Linc Darner shared.
If I am a player I want to play for a coach who thinks this about me!
1 on 1 Interior Reaction - in this drill the defense faces the basket and the offense puts the basketball on their back. When the offense moves the ball it’s live and the defense tries to react to stop them. I got this drill from now University of Denver Assistant Coach Rob Zewe
Pound Pound Cross Cross - this ball handling drill comes from Coach John Beilein’s series. Here each player does two pound dribbles followed by two crossover dribbles before passing the basketball with their right hand. They continue to repeat this working together
The best shooting drills are the ones that simulate game situations. 3 Shot Continuous Shooting consists of a spot up shot, a pull up jumper, and a pop for a shot. I love doing this series with groups of 3 players and making 25 shots from each side of the court!

When I am at a coaching clinic I am always looking for ways I can enhance the abilities of the players I work with. Here Florida State Associate Head Coach Stan Jones shares a ball handling drill in which players purposely handle vs. contact. This was the first time these ladies
I want to share with you several individual defensive skills that are simple to implement. Here we practice a “Stunt” from our gap position between the offensive player we are guarding and the basketball.
The 47 Drill - This is my favorite rhythm drill of all time while developing your ball skills. It is simple and combines a two ball same time dribbling with two ball alternating dribbling. Begin by taking 4 same time dribbles then 7 alternating dribbles and repeat the sequence.
Pro Cone Ball Handling with a Crossover -here the player weaves between the cones with a crossover and then on the way back maneuvers with a crossover and goes backward.
Players must use peripheral vision and can push off their inside foot as they bound into each crossover.
Here is a great drill for younger players to work on their “Pullback” in a controlled setting. The player drives towards the “defender” when they make contact they “protect” with the guide hand pullback and then change the ball to their other hand before repeating.
#basketball
The Commando Drill
This comes from legendary Pennsylvania High School basketball coach John Miller and is one of my favorite finishing drills! It combines ball handling, footwork, finishing, and reaction.
There are many ways to use the “Paint The Circle” drill! Here we have the player handle the basketball within the circle while another player offers contact using a ball. The The contact should force the player to change directions and to offer some bumps that would be “no calls”
Stunts and Stunts to Closeouts, two very important defensive fundamentals. In the first clip the player is in “gap” defense between her imaginary offensive player and the basketball. As the ball handler drives the defender uses a northwest stunt to stop the ball handler.
When working with players on developing and use of a “Pullback Dribble” here are a few things to keep in mind
1) When you attack make the defense stop the basketball
2) Protect the basketball
3) Create contact separation and space
4) Read the defense and react to the situation
- Interior Drop Finishes- Here we work on an interior drop pass for a a finish inside. We use a chair as a token defender to make a move to penetrate. We then simulate a help defender stepping up by using two chairs to drop our pass off for the score.
Looking for a great shooting drill to add to your workouts?
Try “Steph Curry Shooting”
We did this Friday and my group loved it.
7 shots off the catch - how many can you make?
“The Bridge” is one of my favorite two basketball ball handling drills.
It’s simple, bounce one ball to the floor and switch the other ball to your other hand. You repeat this pattern. These players are doing a great job creating rhythm and building their hand eye coordination.
1 on 1 Face Off - this is a highly competitive drill shown here from the nail. The basketball is placed and one player is identified as the offense. When the player is ready he picks up the ball and attacks the basket.
The defense is put at a significant disadvantage
Examples
Here is a great way to work on a “drop” pass that players often make in games!
Imagine beating your defender and getting into the paint - when the help defender steps up to defend you, drop it off to your teammate for basket.
Give it a try today!
The players here are working on a “Drop” using their inside hand. This Small Area Passing drill is great for players to be able to find the open teammate when they get into the paint to drop the ball off to an open teammate for the lay up.

Houston Shooting is one of the best game conditioning shooting drills that I have seen. This summer I had the chance to talk hoops with former NBA all star Allan Houston and he said if he still played today this would be at the top of the list for shooting drills.
Two Balls in One Hand - this drill will always be one of my favorites, begin by alternating the basketballs and then let one go and keep them going. I have always said it’s the best stationary hand eye coordination drill I have ever done.
#basketball
The form shooting repetition that you do on the basketball court adds up over time. Here in this video I encourage the players that the form shooting they do will add up from 20 a day to hundreds a month to thousands over a yr. If you can keep this in mind as you work to improve
4 Directional Ball Handling - Now we put together all 4 Directions to create a small area ball handling drill. Purpose players are able to efficiently move forward, backward, right, and left.
#basketball
Pound Dribble High to Low - this control drill challenges a player to work the ball from below the ankle to above the shoulder.
The player will grow quickly in confidence and adjust their eyes to look forward.
Try this for 15 seconds with each hand
#basketball
What type of detail goes in to your teaching? Here Stetson Head Coach Donnie Jones shared detail on how he teaches his 23 zone. It was great to hear Coach Jones speak and over the years he has used a number of zones to give his team an advantage to win games.
I hope this gives
Michigan Square Passing
This drill comes from Coach John Beilein and combines many fundamentals.
It can be taught stationary or by following your pass, players will use sweeps, arches, and passing to the outside hand, it also gives coaches flexibility to adjust to their ideas.
Stunts To Closeouts
Want to work on your defense?
Here players can work on individual defensive concepts. They begin in a defensive stance in gap position. When they offense dribbles towards the gap, the defender stunts north east with their hands up and out to stop the ball.
Pound Pound Cross Cross - this is a great stationary ball handling done for repetitions or time. Here I demonstrate the drill for 15 seconds beginning with the basketball in my left hand.
The sequence begins with two pounds and an immediate cross cross
Back Pedal Transition Shooting
Here we have the player back pedal aggressively towards half court before changing direction and running into their shot in transition.
Here the player must focus in on the single moment of catching the ball and making the shot.
#basketball
Here we work on drilling the combinations of our “Sweep” and “Arch”.When stepping with out “Hot Foot” make sure you keep your balance.
I love to have players practice this with the variable of switching between the two.
“Read the defense and react”
Commando Drill
This reaction lay up drill was one I often saw Coach John Miller at Blackhawk HS in PA do as he built a championship program
A couple keys to this are a:
Footfire
Reverse Pivot
Attack off dribble
Strong Finish
We added in a defender to challenge the finish
One Hand Transition Bounce Pass - for a team that wants to push the ball on a fast break having players who can advance the ball is key. Here we work on a one hand bounce pass, I grew up watching John Stockton and Jason Williams, this was a skill I developed because of them
If you are looking for a great warm up to improve hand eye coordination that builds team work try “Partner Toss backs”
This drill develops receiving and passing skills while developing your right and left hand.
I recommend quick reps of 8 to 10 seconds
In this set of Triple Threat Fundamentals we work on “Combinations”. Here we vary between using an “Arch-Sweep” and “Sweep- Arch”. When completing each combination we return to a scoring position by going to our shot pocket.
This is a beginning progression before adding defense
Pullback vs Pressure - here we build off our progression of “Pound and Protect”. Before we go live we are going to drill the feeling of defensive pressure on the 1) Protect and 2) Pull back dribble.

Snatches
There are players who are naturally aggressive and for those who are not, it can be taught.
Do you have players who watch the ball or do they go get the ball?
This drill of 3 to 5 reps is part of my intensity series and tomorrow we will build this into finishes!
My dad put this court in our back yard for my brother and I when I was 9 in summer of ‘92.
It had seen better days until the neighbors across the street decided to put in a new backboard and resurfaced it.
It’s becoming a community court for others to chase their dreams!
Small Group Workouts? Open gyms? Preseason Practice?
I have many shooting drills to help players improve their game
Here are a few of my favorites that I use

Two Basketball Small Area Ball Handling
I use this drill often for ball handling development. Here the players moves forward and backward handling the basketballs. You will see them incorporate a same time dribble and then an alternate dribble.

Partner Toss Backs with a Pound
A great drill to build ball handling, passing, and timing skills. I love doing a drill from this series early in workouts to emphasize team work.
Give it a try
Want to improve your directional handle? Try “Pro Cone Ball Handling”. In this variation the players weave thru the cones with same hand at full speed.
The challenge is maneuvering thru the cones backwards!
Build awareness, use your peripheral vision and shift your hips
"One Final Tribute to Kobe" by Alan Stein
This morning had this shared by one of my fellow coaches, and pulled it up for my team to read during our film session.
Thank you
@AlanSteinJr
for this!
If you have not seen this its a must read!
Two Ball Crossovers Across Your Body - this drill is a great way to transform your handle and improve your reaction skills! I cross the basketballs over as move back and forth from side to side across my body.
#basketball
Here is a series of ball handling drills done with two basketballs including the Pound Crossover, the Triangle, and the Pound Triangle.
Yes, you only dribble one ball in a game ; though these are among many reaction drills that improve hand eye coordination and confidence
Post Practice Conversation 6 Things to attack a 23 zone
1) Beat it down the floor
2) Get the ball to middle
3) Get ball to short corner
4) Pass and Ball Fakes
5) Make 2 defend 1 player
6) 2nd chance points
- reply with other keys 🔑 YOU emphasize
Coaches do you have an out of bounds play to run specifically from the corner?
Here is mine - got this from the Warriors and ran last year
Never once had trouble getting the ball in and plenty of open looks for your shooters
The “Slide Series” is a great ball handling drill to replicate pace. Here we use the lane lines as a guide and I demonstrate using 3 crossover dribbles. When the third crossover dribble is taken I push off my outside foot sliding across the lane.

Paolo Banchero works on his ball handling in his NBA pre game warm up. I loved seeing the detail they put into the development in his ball handling skills and then reinforcing it by having him be a primary ball handler in the game.

Coaches check out this BLOB Box play that Harvard has ran. It ends with the gate screen for a wide open 3 pointer on the wing.
Put you best shooter on weak side block where the 2 is at in the diagram
I have ran this action and this play is going to work for your team.
Pivot and Pass - this is a great way for players of all age to improve two very important fundamentals.
One player will begin by giving their teammate a target. Their partner will pass the basketball to that target. When their teammate receives the ball they will pivot
Here is a great way of working on our Triple Threat Fundamentals with our passing. The players in this group are working on using a “Sweep-Sweep” into a chest pass to their teammate.
Whether using a fundamental to create an angle or a fake, occupy the defender!
2 years ago I had a player who would try to win every sprint! He did not want to lose! His teammates tried to beat him and were not able to do so! Thanks
@5starbasketball
for this one!
This hit ahead pass by Sue Bird is a great example of advancing the

Pound-Pound-Cross-Cross
This is a great ball handling drill to do that can simulate game reaction, whether for number of reps or time it’s great for a developing player or a pro.
Give it a try for 15 seconds with a set with your right hand and then left hand
3 Ball 2 Player Reaction has quickly became one of my favorite ball handling development drills! In this series done with Charlie Parker of
@Crunchtimehoops
each of us always has a basketball while the 3rd ball is passed back and forth between us.
I’ve watched plenty of hoops these last 5 days with
@thetournament
! This play by Marcus Keene has got to be my favorite! Look close at what he does with the ball and how he changes his speed, the result a wide open mid range jumper. I am glad he is on our Sideline Cancer team
Here are some variations of the pro cone series that I shared this week:
1st clip - players weave the cones with a single hand
2nd clip - players use a crossover between the cones and finish with a pull up jumper
I place an emphasis on peripheral vision and change of pace!!
Here is another clip of “Curls and Runaways”. This timed drill is done for :40 and the goal is to make 7 of 11 shots. It’s about pace and teaching a player to go up at game speed. That’s right if you go 8 for 10 - you are moving to slow in this drill!
#basketball
Dishes are one of favorite small area passes. I watched Jason Williams come down the floor countless times and make this simple play to an open teammate. Here these younger players work on this concept and do a great job working on developing this passing skill.
The off season is here for many players. The other day someone asked me what I thought should be a player’s primary area of focus. I said simply “shooting”. This is clip shows 3 players tossing the ball out and stepping into their shot with a 1-2 step.
#basketball
The players here are working on a “Push” using their inside hand. This Small Area Passing drill is a cheat pass variation and is great for players to master. I want you to imagine a player penetrating into the paint and seeing an open teammate for a shot.
#basketball
1 on 1 Drive and Kick Closeouts - the player with the basketball begins on the wing and attacks into the paint. They kick the ball out to their teammate who is spotting up.
The player must then closeout on the pass they just made!
The offense can shoot the shot or attack!
Here we combine “Interior Finishes” with “Small Area Passing”.
The player drives the basketball and must make the pass through the open teammate.
This is a great way to practice the pass you need to make before making the drill live with defense.
What’s it like to master your craft? Here you see a group of players doing just that. Each of them is working on “JJ Redick shooting”. They are using a one-two step here with either a right- left or left-right step. This is a great way to work on your form shooting. The story I
I saw this picture from a game yesterday between Portage HS and Cambria Heights HS. It says so much to me about why I love high school sports - passion, hustle, determination
I wondered for a second who got this loose ball then it hit me, who cares! This is giving it your all!
Defensive Contain 3/4 Court Finishes with Billy Clapper and Charlie Parker of Crunchtime Hoops. The defensive player will contain the ball handler on the perimeter for 4 to 6 seconds then the offensive player drops or tosses the basketball in front of the defense.
