I remember talking about giving up alcohol one night a year or two before you hung it up. Proud and happy that u figured it out and ur life lessons now shared will help others along the way!
At 20 years old, I thought I had it all figured out. Boy, was I wrong. I went from can't-miss prospect to did-miss player. From starting right fielder to bartender during the '81 strike (poor career choice, by the way!). From phenom to failure. But here's what I've learned: Failure is an event, not a person. Sometimes you need to get knocked down to figure out who you really are. It took hitting bottom - multiple divorces, alcoholism, lost opportunities - before I realized I needed to change. Got sober in '98. Met my wife Karla who saw the good in me even when I couldn't. That journey led me to find my true purpose: helping others avoid the same pitfalls, teaching life lessons through baseball, and focusing on what truly matters. You're prepared for your future through your past - if you paid attention to it. I paid attention the hard way, so you don't have to. I share these lessons and many more in my new book.
