Snow in the desert!! The Basin Rd has closed while we clear snow, but may remain closed for several hours. Most of the park is currently snowing, so it should be easy to take advantage of this rare, special event.

UPDATE: Lost hiker has been found! After spending 2 unplanned nights in the backcountry in inclement weather, Edilberto Lopez was found by searchers while hiking out. Thanks to all who helped. A happy ending!

After 20 months of closures, the Boquillas Port of Entry within Big Bend National Park, providing access to the village of Boquillas, Coahuila, Mexico will re-open beginning Wednesday, November 17th.

And they're off! The prickly pears are just starting to bloom and what a display it will be! The purple prickly pear, with their red-throated, lemon-yellow flowers (that fade to apricot) have taken the lead, but the other 8 species of prickly pear are showing great promise.

View of the South Rim today. Much of the perimeter is stagnating. The only active burns are located at Emory Peak and lower Boot Canyon. Visible flames from the Basin was the trigger point for closing the Basin.

Things continued to go well on the South Rim Fire yesterday. The cool weather kept fire activity low. The fire has not grown in size since late last week, and remains at 1341 acres and now 80% contained. The Chisos Mtns area of the park remains closed until further notice.

Things went well yesterday on the South Rim Fire. Diablos cleared the west flank, and Mt. Taylor Hotshots made progress in the Pinnacles area. Fire did not enter the Basin. Active burning continues in lower Boot Canyon and the Toll Mtn. area. Current fire area is 785 acres.

With the help of cooler weather, firefighters on the South Rim Fire held the fire to zero growth yesterday! Helicopter bucket drops were "very effective" in Boot and Juniper Canyon areas. Current size remains 929 acres and 35% containment (most of the west and south perimeter).

Yesterday, firefighters again held the South Rim Fire to zero growth! A recon flight and accurate GPS mapping has updated the official size to 1341 acres, and 60% contained. Today, crews will monitoring, clearing downed trees, and directing bucket drops on remaining hot spots.

The South Rim Fire is currently 929 acres. 35% contained. Yesterday went very well. Cool temps and increased humidity have really helped reduce fire activity. Today, crews will continue containment and monitoring the fire.

Flames have become visible near Emory Peak. Out of an abundance of caution, the National Park Service will be closing the Chisos Basin Campground and the Chisos Mountains Lodge this evening at sunset. Park staff will be assisting campers with alternative sites in the park.

Latest South Rim Fire Map: Current size is 873 acres. The Carson Hotshots arrived last night, and will scout and work along the eastern edge of the fire via Juniper Canyon. There are now 88 firefighting personnel engaged in the fire.

The fire quieted down last night. Today's forecast is warmer and drier. Firefighters will be working the remaining active areas: Emory/Pinnacles Ridge, and lower Boot Canyon. The Chisos Basin, including the road, campground, lodge, and trails are closed at this time.

The clouds are burning off today after laying heavily this morning on the Chisos Mountains. After nearly a week of rain, we are enjoying the blue sky! With these lovely sunny skies we expect warmer temperatures, so be prepared with water and sun protection!
