Celebrating Black History: Sun Ra, also known as Herman Poole "Sonny" Blount was an innovative jazz composer, bandleader, pianist & synthesizer player, known for his cosmic philosophy&musical compositions & performances. Sun Ra is an alum of Industrial High School. (Parker High)

Principal Davida Hill Johnson has been selected as the School Administrator recipient of the 2019 Chiquita Marbury Technology Innovation Award. Out of the administrators for 1,637 public schools in our state, our very own Mrs. Johnson was the winner!
Celebrate BHM: Clyde Foster, Parker High & Alabama A&M alum, was a mathematician & scientist who worked for the Army Ballistic Missile Agency & NASA. While at NASA, Foster worked to help several Black Americans become employed with NASA by establishing training programs.
Congratulations to Sun Valley Elementary School teacher Jasmine Merlette who was recently featured on the Ellen DeGeneres show. Ms. Merlette received a huge surprise for her innovation and motivation. Keep up the good work!

Huffman High School has won the Cash for College Most Improved award among large-sized schools in Alabama for by promoting the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Thank you to Dr. Beverly Hackett for her submission!

BCS Senior Spotlight: Ramsay Valedictorian Kayla Caldwell will major in Urban Studies with a minor in Urban Education at the University of Pennsylvania.
Her plans also include teaching in an inner-city public school. Kayla, while teaching, will also pursue a Law Degree.
BCS salutes Princeton Elementary Principal, Dr. LaTausha Daniels, who is a breast cancer survivor. Dr. Daniels decided to share her diagnosis “to encourage others to be intentional about your health. “I just love helping people. Helping people become their best selves is my joy.”
Today, our very own Dr. Michael Wilson, principal of Glen Iris Elementary School was named the National Distinguished Principal of the Year for the state of Alabama by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP)!

BCS shines a spotlight on three alum who are successful football players. Mike Jackson, Seattle Seahawks cornerback, & New York Jets' Quinnen & Quincy Williams recently posed for a photo after competing against each other. All 3 showed exceptional talent since little league.
In response to several inquiries about the status of Ramsay High School, BCS has no plans for school closure. We have previously addressed this rumor, but we reiterate there are no plans for closing the school.

Congratulations to Huffman High School's Terence L. Marzette, department chair of the Academy of Architecture & Construction. Marzette was awarded a $1,500 AMSTI Robotics grant to benefit his school's program. Huffman was the only BCS school selected.

The Wenonah Dragons will compete at 10:45 a.m. this Saturday in the AHSAA 5A Boys’ Basketball State Championship game.
JO alum Vonetta Flowers is an American bobsledder. In the 2002 Winter Olympics, Flowers became the 1st African American & first black athlete to win a gold medal at a Winter Olympics. Flowers also won the bronze medal in the two-woman event at the '04 FIBT World Championships.
Our teachers are giving it their all to make sure our scholars stay engaged. Even with remote teaching and learning, their dedication is truly unmatched and very much appreciated!

Wenonah alum Quinnen Williams is a defensive tackle for the New York Jets. He played college football at UA and was drafted by the Jets in the 2019 NFL Draft. Linebacker Quincy Williams played at Murray State, and was drafted in the 2019 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Ramsay alum Roy Wood Jr., is an Emmy-nominated comedian, writer, actor & producer. Son of radio broadcasting & journalism pioneer, Roy Wood Sr., Wood received a Bachelor’s in broadcast journalism at Florida A&M University. He became successful & took his talent to NBC.
