I’m from Columbus, Ohio. My kids are a super-minority in their classrooms, too. Maybe 1 in 10 kids have American-born parents. The rest are South Asians and Africans. My kindergartner can only attend school 2 or 3 days a week because there are too many new immigrant children. No Halloween. They get teased for believing in Santa Claus. I had to introduce my kids to football, basketball, kickball, etc because their classmates don’t understand American sports. This elementary school is part of a wealthy white suburban school district where taxes were raised years ago to accommodate the number of new families and newborns who would soon be students. Locals paid massive taxes for the expanding school district, only to have the immigrant families move into nearby apartments and take over the school. The people who paid for the school moved away as their property values plunged. All of this happened because Chase Bank wanted cheap IT and call center labor. Instead of giving locals jobs, they brought in South Asians by the planeload. They’re great people, good neighbors. But my kids are like foreign exchange students in their own backyards.
