I am so, so sorry to hear of the passing of Trevor Francis. He wrote for Tiger for many years and he was a lovely man to work with. Here's Trevor and his wife Helen during their flight to America, where Trevor was to play for Detroit Express. The two of them now reunited.

Digging around in my souvenir file, I came across my very rough rough for my new 1976 football title. This is my first suggestion that it be called Roy of the Rovers. It's crude and nothing like we finished up but it was a start!

In 1976, when I was trying to persuade management to produce a Roy of the Rovers weekly, I did this very rough rough of a first issue. Because we had a free gift, the actual first issue was nothing like this but it showed how I was thinking...and the Roy idea was approved!

Just after Gordon Banks became Tiger Sports Star of the Year, I asked him if he'd appear in a Roy of the Rover story. He agreed and this is the result. Roy was playing for an all-star team against Melchester...and Gordon had to face a penalty! Great art by Yvonne Hutton.

It's September 1981 and Melchester Rovers show off their new Gola kit. It was a good sponsorship until we were forced to remove the name on the shirt fronts because it was "unfair advertising for children". Anway, in this issue I'd obtained some strips for a competition!

Bryan Tomlinson died yesterday. No relation, he was my best mate. We went to Test matches together, lads days to the seaside and we'd lunch every monday. He ran mini marathons for Roy of the Rovers. Condolences to his family. A very special, lovely man. Rest in peace.

A 1979 cover we produced, starring Tommy Barnes and the lads of Barnes United. Scripted by Fred Baker and illustrated by Ramiro Bujeiro. The story ran for about ten years and was in the very first Roy of the Rovers comic.

In 1982 'Game For a Laugh' was a top TV show. I invited the stars to visit the Eagle offices for our Christmas issue. They caused chaos when they arrived at the IPC reception. But they were great to work with and we got a memorable cover. Sorry about lack of snow on the logo!
