I am very grateful to Julien for this tweet. And not just because he promoted a fellow artist but because he found a concise and very accurate way to tell the story of our (my son’s and my) artistic project just by picking those 3 images! Let me explain… My son Sasha is autistic. I don’t know if this is important to our artistic practice, but it explains where it comes from. Autism is a spectrum and all people with autism are different. My son communicates well for an autistic child but it was not always the case. When he was younger it was a struggle and I tried to use any way to stimulate him to express himself. Because he was very much into Pokemon I used them ias a creative exercise. He enjoys drawing imaginary creatures and we then discuss them. They all have their strengths and weaknesses and I know that there are whole worlds in my son’s imagination that I’d like to discover for myself and when possible share with others. I did some art in the past and the painting project came to life from a simple idea - I will show my son what could be done in painting and he will be inspired to continue on his own. It was not that easy. He prefers just to give me his drawing and some verbal instructions and wait for the finished result. And usually his instructions are not very detailed. I use the hours spent on each painting in an imaginary discussion with my son, trying to figure out what he wanted to convey by his initial drawing, what would the painting look like if he had the patience to do it himself. I got really hooked. I see my part in the project as purely technical, where I try to implement the creative vision of my son to the best of my understanding. When he sees the result his reactions vary from a mere 'it's ok' to an occasional 'wow!' and when it happens I am beyond happy. Once a year for the last three years we've been hosting a home exposition for family and friends where we showcase the paintings that we have done. Even though Sasha is naturally shy and he gets tired by crowds, this day is very special to him. He takes pride in showing the paintings that we've done, he enjoys being in the centre of everyone's attention. Despite of his difficulties, he is quite savvy and he knows that this activity could become a profession and he wants to sell our paintings. I would also like our artworks to find owners who appreciate and will enjoy them. But until we find buyers willing to pay the high price that he wants them to fetch, I came up with this new project of linocut prints. Linocut is a time-consuming medium as well, but at least we can have multiple editions, each one unique. The differences between prints might range from small printing artifacts to a different color palette that creates a completely different feel. Even though it is a deeply physical medium, it resonates with modern generative art techniques, leaving a part of surprise where the artist cannot imagine the work completely until it is done. I do enjoy sending out physical copies and I believe that it creates a more personal connection. I would also like to think that if the collector displays the print in his home it will bring joy, or at least an occasional smile more often than a purely digital artwork. As you can see I am much less concise than Julien :) And I could continue forever, but I'd like to wrap it up for now. So why did his tweet strike me so much? First of all, he took time to go to to look at our paintings. He picked one of my favourite paintings and he has showed it from Sasha's drawing to the finished oil painting. With the linocut print of Roi Pignokio he has shown the physical piece that I sent him via regular mail. Only in tree images @Julien_Espagnon tells the story that I couldn't fit into a whole page :) Thank you!
