Statehood for Puerto Rico is not, and will never be, a progressive choice, but rather a colonialist choice based on ideals of American exceptionalism, and low societal self-esteem of not believing that we can govern and take care of ourselves.

This may be a glib post, but it's also a real warning. Statehood would absolutely mean thousands and thousands more Americans moving to Puerto Rico for sun, sand, and cheaper real estate. That would supercharge the ongoing gentrification and displacement of our people!

Benito’s refusal to speak a language other than his own is a highly political move. Not only does he unabashedly and unapologetically speak in Spanish, but he does so in that ever-maligned Caribbean Spanish, full of so many skipped consonants, Spanglish that it borders on Creole.

Colonialism leads to displacement—to people being disconnected from their homeland. As Hawaii’s case shows, statehood does mot prevent this problem. In fact, it can supercharge it. Only independence will let Puerto Ricans build a future in our land, for our people!

" #PuertoRico is a classic colony and this organization must get more involved in the liberation of our people. Through decolonization colonies become independent. Those who favor absorption into the oppressing country are for colonization, not against it. 🧵 @AOC @RepAOC @NRDems

The United States is not our country. Not just because we know in our hearts that we are Puerto Ricans. But because it is a legal and political fact that Puerto Rico is not PART of the United States—it is a nation OWNED by the United States.

@BUDPR @juandalmauPR Why do you call people who just moved to another jurisdiction within their country "diaspora"?

Puerto Rican statehood has no support in Congress. Democrats don’t take meaningful action on it, and Republicans hate the idea so much that they’re openly opposing it on the campaign trail to attract voters. It’s time to demand our freedom from people who don’t want us!

Another pro-statehood politician guilty of corruption. It's no coincidence that dozens of elected officials from Puerto Rico's statehood party (PNP) have ended up in jail for unethical behavior. What's more immoral than loving, supporting, and wanting to join your colonizer?

If the United States invaded a nation tomorrow, most moral Americans would demand that the U.S. free it, not keep it. That same principle of basic political justice demands freedom for Puerto Rico, which was invaded and has been colonized by the U.S. for the past 125 years.

Global megastar @sanbenito has weighed in on Puerto Rico's political situation and urged his fans to vote in the island's elections this November against the pro-statehood and pro-colony parties that have brought PR to political and economic ruin. (Headline from @elnuevodia )

Outrageous: While Puerto Rican children suffer through 100 degree heat in classrooms, pro-statehood governor Pedro Pierluisi vetoed a bill that would've put air conditioning in schools and the U.S.-appointed fiscal board spends millions on consultants.

We hope boricuas everywhere are enjoying time with their families today. But let’s remember that Thanksgiving is a national day of mourning for Native Americans, and an opportunity for all of us to reflect on the impact of colonialism—in centuries past and in Puerto Rico today.

Pudimos también constatar que la gran mayoría de los políticos del @pnp_pr que convocaron a la marcha desde el Capitolio federal hasta el Monumento de la II Guerra Mundial, no marcharon, y tomaron Uber del Capitolio al sitio final. @KerenRiquelme51 @JoseAponte51 @Carmelorios

Today we celebrate Puerto Rico’s flag. Not too long ago, owning one could be used as evidence that you were a pro-independence subversive and get you jailed. Now we wave it proudly, as a symbol of our national identity and resistance to U.S. colonialism!
