BNSF employees in Rathdrum, Idaho, found a great horned owl stuck in the undercarriage of a locomotive. After consulting with

, they safely pushed the owl out using brooms and welding gloves. The owl is being treated at Kootenai Animal Hospital.

Check out BNSF’s California fire train. It's made up of five water tank cars, three pumpers, two tenders and a purpose-built caboose. The tanks hold 104,710 gallons of water. The three pumpers and caboose have two water cannons on each end.

Last week, BNSF helped local firefighters contain a wildfire in the Tri-Cities area of Washington state using one of our “fire trains.” Each train has special railcars that hold up to 30,000 gallons of water, making it easier to soak hard to reach areas.
The span for the new rail bridge on Drano Lake in Washington settled into its new home 18 days after it departed Vancouver by barge. The structure replaces a 113-year-old truss that dated back to the original construction of the rail line through the Columbia River Gorge.
On June 10, 1929, BNSF predecessor Great Northern Railway opened their famous Empire Builder route. The over 2,200-mile passenger route, now operated by Amtrak runs from Chicago to Portland and Seattle and is still in service today.

began a new era for railroads. It created more balanced regulations and freed up railroads' ability to invest in their networks. Now, America enjoys the world's best freight rail system, and BNSF is an industry leader in safety and efficiency.

Today in 1908, the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railroad (SP&S), a BNSF predecessor, drove its golden spike near North Bonneville, Washington, marking the completion of J.J. Hill's line to the West Coast.
As the Dec. 31 2018 deadline approaches, BNSF is the first and only Class I railroad to complete installation of Positive Train Control (PTC) infrastructure on our network. More details at
