I’m devastated by this news. Johnny was my idol when I was younger. Matty was a hard working player who made his own mark at BC. I’m praying for their parents Guy and Jane, their sisters Kristen and Katie, and Johnny’s young family. RIP to the GOAT of BC Hockey.
Gutted. Congrats to Denver on an absolute hell of a game. Matt Davis with one of the best goaltending performances I've seen. Holding BC to zero goals is so impressive.
Hope BC's guys can keep their heads up. They've got a lot to be proud of.
Legendary
@BC_MHockey
coach Jerry York wants to erect a statue of Johnny Gaudreau at Boston College.
@Ken_Campbell27
says it would be a fitting tribute to a champion and superstar at the school on and off the ice:
Can't believe it's been 12 years- 12 friggin years! Happy for the players and staff. The student support they get- it's unbelievable. Nothing better than beating BU, nothing. Onto the NCAA's.
Go Eagles.
Holding that team to zero goals is pretty damn impressive. BC was great in transition but the story of the game was the team defense and goaltending. Fowler was unreal. Cutter was outstanding against McGroarty's line. Had to figure Smith and Perreault would bounce back. One more.
I'm hearing from sources that Will Smith has signed with the Sharks. Smith is coming off one of the best seasons in BC history and now joins a list that includes Leetch, Kobasew, Hanifin, and Wood as players to leave BC after one year.
#AllCaps
GM Brian MacLellan confirms top prospect Ryan Leonard is NOT joining the team for the playoffs and is returning to Boston College for another season.
Not sure I can remember a season where the leading point-getter in the country got essentially zero traction for the Hobey. Smith has the most points in college hockey since 15/16. 1.77 PPG vs Blake's 1.50. I get the East/West issue but at some point, the numbers have to matter.
Big news- BC has landed a commitment from William Moore of the NTDP. Moore is arguably the top uncommitted prospect on the market and is projected to be a high first round pick in the 2025 draft. Moore recorded 43 points in 50 games this year and led the U17 team in goals (23).
There's nothing better than beating BU. Nothing. Great last couple of shifts by BC, especially after losing the face off. Unreal games from some of their freshmen (loved Fortescue tonight). Gasseau also had some great moments. Awesome awesome night to be an Eagle. Win tomorrow.
So happy for Coach Brown, his family, and the program. He is an awesome hockey coach and a better person. Pumped for the future of BC Hockey. Let’s go.
No. 1 Boston University vs. No. 2 Boston College in hockey this weekend. Here is a little history of the rivalry and how college hockey has shaped this region.
Ryan Leonard is staying at Boston College and will not make the NHL jump with the Capitals this season.
More on his decision and what he wants to improve:
Just seeing the Hobey news. I thought it was a coin flip before ESPN hinted at the results last night. Cutter has had one of the best individual seasons in BC history and has put up with a lot of crap since the trade. He's got a lot to be proud of this year, Hobey or not.
BC received another huge commitment today as Youngstown (USHL) goalie Jacob Fowler signed his NLI today. Some consider Fowler to be the best goalie in the USHL- he picked BC over Michigan.
The news everyone is waiting for- Providence forward Brady Berard is transferring to BC. An NTDP alum, he recorded 8 points in 27 games last year. His dad, David Berard, was recently named head coach at Stonehill.
What an awesome moment for the 7 Eagles and everyone else on Team USA. That was so fun to watch- might be the best US team I've seen at that age group. American hockey is in an unbelievable spot. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
🚨 BREAKING 🚨Boston College has received a commitment from the top uncommitted player available and the
#2
ranked skater in the entire 2006-born class James Hagens. They also received a commitment from his brother 4 ⭐️ 2005-born Michael Hagens. Absolutely massive for BC.
BC has received a commitment from one of the top 06s in the US- Belmont Hill F Teddy Stiga. Stiga will play for the US NTDP next fall and is the second member of BC’s 06 class. Significant recruiting win for Eagles.
What a turn of events. Game totally flipped on the Joyce goal- unreal play by Malone in the corner to make it happen. On the fourth goal, Leonard likely prevented a Tech goal before BC went the other way. They picked a good time for one of their best periods of the year.
Quick thread (will have a post later). So happy for this team- they just kept fighting. QU dominated them in the third but BC had one chance and took advantage. Malone doesn't get the hype others get but he does so much for them on both ends. Cool moment for him.
The Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation is pleased to announce the Top Ten candidates for the 2024 award honoring college hockey’s top player. Voting is now open.
I was at this game a million years ago. Pretty sure this is the first time I've seen the replay. One of the great goals in BC history and is also the last time BC played Michigan in the NCAAs. Pretty cool.
Important update here. We had discussed this in our article last week but now seems like it is a done deal. I think he will be the first player to go from prep to BC since Wood in 2016.
Just talked to 2024 NHL prospect Dean Letourneau at the combine in Buffalo ...
Potential first-rounder was originally slated to play for USHL Sioux Falls in 2024-25, then Boston College in '25-26. Change of plans. With Will Smith turning pro, Letourneau's off to BC in the fall.
6-1 win. Very impressed with Michigan Tech (and their fans) - they had BC on the ropes for 40 minutes and if it wasn't for Fowler, things could have gone downhill. As for BC, what a third- third goal just turned the tide. They'll play the winner of QU/Wisco on Sunday. Post later.
I'm really excited for the chance to cover BC hockey at Eagle Insider this season and beyond. This is where I'll be posting my stuff from here on out. Thanks to A.J. for this opportunity- I can't wait to get started.
Big site news, let's welcome
@BCHockeyBlogger
to the Eagle Insider family! Hockey talk on the site is going to the next level right before what should be a HUGE season for the Eagles.
JAMES. HAGENS. 🇺🇸😤
With a whopping 22 points so far, James Hagens has set a new single-tournament scoring record at the
@IIHFHockey
Under-18 Men’s World Championship, surpassing Nikita Kucherov’s 21 points at the 2011 event.
Congrats, Hags! 👏
I don't know if Denver played a perfect game, but it was pretty darn close. They were the better team tonight and are deserving champs.
Anyway, this should be an interesting offseason. Thanks to everyone for reading/following, as always.
Breaking- per my sources, Providence head coach Nate Leaman interviewed with BC earlier this week and is a leading candidate for the job. Leaman won a national title at PC in 2015.
Too many errors tonight- turnovers on third and fourth BU goals did them in, as did some bad penalties. Loved the fight back in the end, but it wasn't enough. They'll bounce back, but that was a real disappointment. Credit BU. What a bummer.
Home or away, I've never seen crowds for BC games remotely like this, even when they had it going in the 2000s and 2010s. It's great for college hockey.
The college hockey recruiting cycle gets going today. Here is our updated, sure to be wrong in some fashion future roster chart. I expect them to be active in this cycle, particularly as it pertains to the blue line. I'll post a link to some names I am keeping an eye on below.
BC gets a commitment from defenseman Kristian Kostadinski, a Bruins 7th round pick. The 6’6 defenseman is slated to arrive in 2025 after playing for Dubuque in the USHL this upcoming year. I’ll have a post later tonight.
‼️🚨BREAKING🚨‼️
NHL Draft Pick Commit Alert!!!!
Boston College doesn’t slow down with a BIG addition in Kristian Kostadinski! 🦅

BC has landed its fourth commit of the day and it's another big one in defenseman Cameron Chartrand. Neutral Zone ranks Chartrand as its 12th best 08 prospect overall, 4th among defensemen (4.5 stars). Chartrand is a Montreal native who was drafted by Cedar Rapids (USHL). 1/2
6-4 win. Liked the response after going down a goal in the third. Power play was humming. They were sloppy for a lot of the game, but cleaned it up defensively late. PK was great. Wonder if UMass fans still don't want Leonard?
5-1 final. Not much else to say other than this team is extremely fun to watch when they are on. As excited as I've been about BC hockey in a long time. All four lines had good moments tonight, especially Cutter's unit. Will have a post later this weekend.
I will have a post later tonight but another awesome pickup for BC. I had one (non-BC affiliated) scout compare BC's class of Wathier, Croskery, and Chartrand to the Matheson, McCoshen, and Santini group of a decade ago (Matheson was a year ahead of the others but point stands).
🚨 BREAKING 🚨 4 ⭐️ Sam Wathier has committed to Boston College! The dual-citizen defender was selected for the US NTDP program and was our 18th ranked skater for the 2024 OHL Draft.
Boston College lands another top defender out of Ontario!
5-3 win. Big time plays by BC's big time players in the end. Killer for UNH- they were very good. BC was bad in their own end but found a way. Good teams find ways to grind out games like that on the road- that definitely wasn't their A game. 19,9,6 just took over. Onto Sunday.
6-4 win. I thought they played well tonight. Seems like Smith is under the radar when it comes to the Hobey race, which is crazy since he leads the country in points. He was unbelievable tonight. Looks like they got out without any injuries. HEA quarterfinals on Saturday.
Boston College set a USA Hockey record with seven players from the same school on a World Junior Championship roster. BC now has 17 players who have earned a total of 18 gold medals
Thoughts-
- 19, 9, and 24 were men amongst boys out there.
- Fowler made it look easy all night. Bad break on the goal.
- liked the way BC played in their own end. Thought they had good structure and mostly avoided turnovers.
- how about the PK?
Great win.
Ryan Leonard on Will Smith and re-evaluating:
"No. I'm myself. He's him. You want the best for him, and it's not about individuals. It's about the team, and I want to be a part of the team that wins Boston College another national championship. Not really ready to leave yet."
I think one takeaway is how well Powell has developed over his four years. He got kind of stuck behind Helleson, St. Ivany, and Warren at times but I'd say he's one of the more underrated BC d men I've seen. He does a lot for them and will be hard to replace.
1-0 win. They get the Hockey East regular season title but that was not a good game. Fowler was fantastic and they closed it down late but other than that it was shaky. Nice goal by Powell. UNH played well all weekend- they'll be a tough out. Post later.
Sad to learn that Tony Voce, former Philadelphia Phantom and Boston College player has passed away at age 43
Voce was born in Philly and was a friend of
@larryfknflowers
Rest in Peace Tony 🙏🏻
Carvel: Half of [BC's] kids have played 10-12 games in this building. Our team hasn't. It's a big stage. We didn't want it to be an excuse but we didn't have the experience playing here. We didn't get a chance to skate here yesterday. But those are excuses.
Big one tonight. Hope BC is ready for BU's best because beating them 3 times in 11 days will be very difficult. BU has last change- wonder if they try to get Celebrini away from Cutter. So much on the line for both teams. Should be a great game. See you at 8.
Another big time recruiting win for BC. Letourneau is flying up draft boards and could be a first round pick this summer. Believe this is a 2025 arrival. Will have a post later.
17-year-old Dean Letourneau has committed to Boston College.
6’6 / 209lb F who has 24G 26A over just 21GP this season at St. Andrew’s College. Former Northeastern commit.
Here is my post on last night's unbelievable win. A few thoughts-
- Fowler won the game for them. He was unreal.
- Smith is on a heater, especially since WJC.
- Cutter did a nice job on Celebrini all weekend

@BCHockeyBlogger
breaks down another big win for Greg Brown, some timely goals, and a big performance from freshman goalie Jacob Fowler (VIP).
Cole Caufield has changed his number to 13 in honor of Johnny Hockey according to his latest Instagram post.
Such a heartfelt post from the
@CanadiensMTL
star.
Here's my post from yesterday-
- Fowler kept them in it through two
- Great kill on the five minute major
- Third goal was the turning point
- Thought Jellvik had one of his best games
- They'll need Smith and Perreault to be better tomorrow
BC and Michigan Tech looked evenly matched for two periods, but the Eagles came alive in the third to put away the Huskies.
@BCHockeyBlogger
breaks down the win, and analyzes everything that happened in Providence (FREE)
This will be a great night for BC hockey. Chance that three Eagles will go in the top ten of the draft, something that has never happened in program history. BC has only had three players go in the first round once before (2019). Truly one of the best recruiting classes ever...
Well, it all comes down to this. BC will have to get past the best program in college hockey over the last 10 years. The Pios have a lot of talent- Z. Buium is perhaps the best d-man in college hockey. Up front, they're deep but Devine and Rizzo make the offense go. 1/3
5-0 win. Always great to smoke Harvard- they are horrendous. Good stuff up and down the lineup. Congrats to Korec. Perreault has to be at the front of the pack for Hobey Baker right now. Will have a short post later.
BC goes for its 19th Hockey East regular season title tonight v. UNH- a regulation win would clinch it outright. More importantly, they'll look to strengthen their grip on
#1
in the PWR. It's also a big PWR game for UNH, who needs a win. Expecting a good contest. See you then.
4-2 win. They definitely didn't have their A game tonight but found a way to get it done and hang onto first place. Power play looked like my golf game (beyond bad). Awesome nights from Leonard, Smith, and Cutter. Thought Hreschuk was great as well. Fowler solid. Post tomorrow.
Congrats to the 7 Eagles listed below. A little surprised Hagens did not make it, but he'll be on the team next year, obviously. Minnetian didn't get invited to the summer camp but forced his way on with a great first half. Cool moment for BC hockey.
BC gets Michigan Tech in the first round of the NCAA's today at 2. Huskies have won 5 in a row, including the CCHA championship @ Bemidji last weekend. They're one of the top defensive teams in the country, giving up just 2.5 GA/G. They also do not take many penalties. 1/3.
Anyways, this will be BC's 25th Frozen Four- their first since 2016. It'll be their first tournament game against Michigan since Ben Eaves' OT goal in 2004. Wolverines are red hot- that'll be another war. What an unbelievable FF this is. God help us all if BC/BU win.
Go Eagles
Some quick stats-
- Leonard (+24) has the best +/- in Hockey East. Closest player to him is +20.
- Gauthier leads the country in goals with 25. Perreault holds the points lead with 46.
- Fowler
#5
in save %- two of the guys ahead of him have played roughly half the # of games.
This was very cool getting a shoutout from
@NathanPStrauss
on the broadcast tonight. Thank you, Nate! I just wish people would say the same about my golf game!
Alright we are back! I'm sure absolutely no one cares about what I've been up to, but my old account was hacked by some stiff in Russia. Life has not been the same without this blog, so let's get it going again.
Well….I have no idea how this season will end up. Could be great, could be not so good. However, BC is coming and they’re coming very soon. What a massive recruiting win for the staff- BC has three projected first rounders coming in next year.
BC also got a commitment from Casey Mutryn, the top 2008 in MA. Mutryn’s family ties to BC are well-documented but he is a high-end forward in his own right. Played for Sebs last year and will move to the NTDP this season. Definitely one of the best 08 forwards in the country.
1-0 win. They get the Hockey East regular season title but that was not a good game. Fowler was fantastic and they closed it down late but other than that it was shaky. Nice goal by Powell. UNH played well all weekend- they'll be a tough out. Post later.
Jones, an 07 birthdate, is a 4.25 star recruit per
@_Neutral_Zone
. He has 48 points in 36 games for the Shattuck U16 team this year. He is also a first round pick of Portland (WHL). Projected fall 2025 arrival.
I am honoured and proud to announce my commitment to continue my education and play Division 1 hockey at Boston College. Thank you to my family, friends, teammates, coaches, and advisors for supporting me along the way.

Best win of the year considering the circumstances. Great response after going down a goal. Unreal shift by Jellvik and Gasseau on BC 5th goal. Will have a short post tonight and then more later in the week.
Regional final today against QU. I think the game will come down to whether BC can get through the neutral zone- they had a very hard time doing this against Tech in the first two periods. BC will need its top line to be much better. 1/2
3-0 after two. Couple of solid kills and some puck luck on the second goal. Great individual effort by Cutter on his goal. Michigan will come hard here.
BC received a commitment from 2006 F Tobias Pitka out of the Selects Academy U18 team. Pitka, 6’4, has 25 points in 21 games this year for the U16 team and 8 points in 18 games for the U18 team (he was moved up an age group). He is from Slovakia.
Just seeing this after carrying around the SVP of the BCHB on the course today. New goalie commit for BC as they try to figure out their post-Fowler future. Hearing Cameron is a great pick up for them. Will have more later.
‼️🚨BREAKING🚨‼️
GOALIE COMMIT ALERT!!!
Boston College swoops up a commit from ‘07 net-minder Ryan Cameron!
The PA native has played the last few years for the Long Island Gulls. Was the starter for 🇺🇸during the

cup. Ninth round pick in the 2024 USHL Draft by
We'll see what happens in the next couple of weeks but I'd be pretty shocked if Smith is anywhere but SJ next year. Sharks have been pursuing him since the season ended and this news can only help their cause. I think Smith was already leaning towards signing.
Perreault now has 34 points in 21 games.
Ken Hodge has the BC freshman record with 64 points in 41 games.
Record probably won't be broken, but something to watch.
Other notable freshman years-
Gionta- 62 pt/41 games
Reasoner- 45/34
Leetch (as a D)- 47/37
Kobasew- 49/43
