@justinsomuch When I started I was doing a full package for like $500-800. Mostly work for hire because handling backend with independent artists can be a huge hassle for no real payoff. Now I charge $3500+ for indie and $5,000+ for labels and negotiate backend.

@justinsomuch People just need to be really aware of what they’re asking for. If you’re a producer, a good place to start is take an advance (negotiate for nonrecoupable) and ask for 5 points. With that said, unless the song pops off the backend won’t ever be much. Get a good advance / fee.

@justinsomuch The world of work for hire, points, publishing splits, etc can be super complicated. Essentially, everything is negotiable. Producers can negotiate for songwriter publishing, but may not get it. Mixing engineers can negotiate for a point, you can take no backend, etc.

@justinsomuch Technically producers don’t typically get publishing unless they write lyrics and/or melody. Instead producers get points on the master (which songwriters don’t typically get). If I place an instrumental with an artist, I’ll get an advance and typically 4-6 points on the master.

@justinsomuch @ellipsi_music Yeah Ellipsi got this one. Unless there is a buyout and you sell your publishing and any potential master split, it’s still automatically implied that all of the back will be negotiated before release. Letting someone exclusively use a beat, song, etc isn’t the same as a buyout.

@justinsomuch It was ilok before everyone started bitching about hating ilok. People hated the dongle so ilok got cloud hosting, then people complained about the servers. Then ilok added loval computer hosting and people complained when they had to switch computers. Licensers are a lose/lose

@ProducerWCooper All. You need to have an audience to show the pack to, but then it has to be fire so people actually spend money on it. I see fire packs from people with no audience that don’t make much money. Then I see garbage packs from big names that sell well but people feel meh about
