Physician. Mom. Master in Public Health. Proud Chinese American (歐曉瑜). Georgia House of Representatives for the 50th District. Font Police. Au pronounced “OW.”
In 2022, GA Republicans redistricted me out of my Senate seat.
In 2024, they’re targeting me again in the House.
Because there’s nothing more threatening to the GOP than a Democratic legislator in a swing seat who is good at her job.
Help us fight back:
I worked with Dr. Oz in the operating room when I was an anesthesiology resident, and can directly confirm that he, along with the rest of us, wore a mask all day without issue.
I am in a 2 physician family, and my spouse and I spent the last few days revising our will. Who should be the executor, who has power of attorney, who gets the kids (each with a three-person order of succession)
This is for all the people who are not taking
#COVID19
seriously.
“We are not the frontline in this battle. We as healthcare workers stand in the back. We’re the LAST line of defense. The frontline of this epidemic is YOU, the people in the community, tasked with the challenge of keeping each other safe.”
Vaccinated people are like wet logs, unvaccinated like dry kindling. COVID is the fire.
Can wet logs catch fire? Yes.
Can wet logs SPREAD fire once they catch flame? Sure.
But it’s MUCH harder to start a fire with wet logs, and nearly impossible when there’s no more kindling.
This is the level of PPE clinicians wear to enter a fully ventilated negative-pressure hospital room with a COVID-positive patient inside.
The standard hospital room has greater than 7x the cubic footage of a Chevy Suburban.
I just need to point out that the way these OR scrubs are stacked in the cupboard is utterly illogical.
(Signed, someone who wears XS scrubs because she is 5’2”.)
For people not taking this seriously, 3 things about social distancing.
1. It’s not all about you.
2. “Only old people will die” is an incredibly shitty attitude.
3. This is a sacrifice you’re making for your community. Please help to give the medical system a fighting chance.
One thing I think we can all learn from watching the past few weeks at Twitter HQ is just how quickly thoughtless, careless leadership can destroy complex systems.
What’s more dangerous to women and girls?
Trans girls playing sports?
Or men with guns?
Will we work on real problems, or just look away again?
I want our universal background check bill, SB 179, to get a hearing, and if not, I want someone to explain to my face why.

Just to note: these House members don’t pay for any of these Coke products, they are provided to our offices as a courtesy.
But...sure. Sock it to The Man.
Some Georgia Republican state legislators are removing
@CocaCola
products from their statehouse offices after the Atlanta-based beverage giant criticized the new elections law.

This may be futile, but I implore folks to not be so binary in their approach.
It's not a matter of "MASKS BAD ALWAYS" vs. "MASKS ALL THE TIME FOREVERMORE."
Let's allow that conditions fluctuate, adaptability is paramount, and absolutism in any direction is counterproductive.
This morning, the eyes of the nation are on Georgia.
And while we continue to wait for all the ballots to be counted, I’m honored to announce that my race has been called, and that I’ve been elected to be the next State Senator for District 48.
This is what Republicans think will distract you so you won't notice they just proposed to cut veterans medical benefits, block student loan forgiveness, and still refuse to fully expand Medicaid in Georgia.
Tonight I was the lead physician on the hospital’s emergency airway team. Risky intubations on presumed/confirmed COVID patients. I can already see that we’re running low on personal protective equipment (PPE). We’re cleaning and reusing single use items. Rationing supplies.
“‘Vaccination is a personal decision between each citizen and a medical professional – not the state government,’ Kemp said in a statement.”
Neat. Now do abortion.
Some have asked what I said to
@POTUS
and
@VP
during our closed door chat. Here's one thing.
We're very quick, when white men are the murderers, to focus on mental health.
But if mental health is a cause of gun violence, we logically need to enforce universal background checks.
The Republicans tried to draw me out of the Georgia General Assembly.
But I'm not going anywhere.
I will never apologize for being good at my job.
And I’m not done yet.
I am running for the Georgia State House in District 50.
Help us start strong:
The risk of death associated with pregnancy and childbirth is approximately 14 times higher than that with legal abortion.
But do go on about those free baby wipes.
Greg Abbott says that instead of having an abortion, victims of rape can avail themselves of the state's "alternatives to abortion" program, which provides "baby supplies"
In public health, prevention is the goal.
We wear seatbelts BEFORE the accident. We wear helmets BEFORE getting hit in the head. We get vaccines BEFORE we get sick.
Red flag laws prevent gun violence injuries and deaths from:
🚩 Suicide
🚩 Domestic violence
🚩 Mass shootings
Dan Crenshaw says on CNN that he doesn't support red flag laws nationally or in Texas because "what you're essentially trying to do with a red flag law is enforce the law before the law is broken"
Incredible how “yeah, but gas prices” is felt to be a proportionate and reasonable riposte to people’s anguish about losing a Constitutional right they’ve counted on for a lifetime.
Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley on if he worries about backlash from his constituents over SCOTUS ending the federal right to an abortion: "I don't worry about it ... Iowans are concerned about inflation, about gas prices, and about the border -- the Rio Grande not being controlled"
As some know, in addition to being a member of the GA House of Representatives I'm also a practicing anesthesiologist.
There's some talk today about the anesthetic drug ketamine. In the interest of scuttling medical misinformation, here's a 🧵 re: ketamine and its effects.

It’s rare to get six members of Congress together for any one event, and that these are all members of the Congressional
#AAPI
caucus is so meaningful for GA, where AAPI voters have been the margin of victory for Democrats.
Let’s send
@ReverendWarnock
back to work for all us!
I became a doctor because I wanted to help people and fix difficult problems. I am now entering a new phase of public service for these exact same reasons.
So today I’m proud to officially announce that I’m running for Georgia State Senate, District 48.
Incredible turnout at this rally and canvass launch for
@ReverendWarnock
with special guest Sen.
@CoryBooker
!
Especially loved seeing all the college students in the crowd, home in GA for Thanksgiving break. Thank you, Sen. Warnock, for fighting for their chance to vote today!
Some may come out today with snide, condescending takes on GA, and what it says about us that the runoff was ever so close.
They can take that hot take and shove it.
GA continues to do something remarkable, which is to change.
This results from the hard work of many.
Respect.
"Racism against AAPI Americans is not new.
Otherization of AAPI Americans is not new.
But the motto of the United States is E Pluribus Unum: 'Out of many, one.'
Asian-Americans are part of our country’s plurality.
We are some of the many, and we’re part of that one."

As an anesthesiologist legislator, I’m accustomed to being told, “Oh, but you have no experience in X field of medicine, because you’re JUST an anesthesiologist.”
Yo. Listen up.
The thing about anesthesiology is…
We interface with essentially EVERY field of clinical medicine.
I am a frontline medical doctor with a masters degree in public health. Please support my campaign to become the first ever Chinese-American elected to the Georgia State Senate.
Sen. John Cornyn: "China is to blame because the culture where people eat bats & snakes & dogs & things like that, these viruses are transmitted from the animal to the people and that's why China has been the source of a lot of these viruses like SARS, like MERS, the Swine Flu."
Words from a political figure who has promoted intolerance and persecution of the LGBTQ community, while valorizing profligate gun culture with lax regulation at the expense of public safety.
The Republicans continue to graft “Chinese” used as a slur onto basically anything, making plain that racism and xenophobia is central to their platform.
“I think our candidates know how to message that, and they’ll be just fine in the midterms.”
I've reconstituted the Pfizer vaccine. Yes, you CAN get 6 doses with some practice + the right equipment, but there are 7 transfer points, and you lose volume at each step. That's where the extra helps.
For Pfizer to nickel and dime us in this moment of crisis is UNCONSCIONABLE.
2) “For weeks, Pfizer execs pushed officials at Trump FDA to change the wording of vaccine’s emergency use authorization so it formally acknowledged that vials contained 6 doses, not 5. Distinction critical: Pfizer’s contract requires paid by the dose.”
Every time a GA Republican says insufficient mental healthcare funding is the root of rampant gun violence, ask why then they continue to refuse to expand Medicaid, the country’s single largest payer for mental health and substance use services.
They’re running out of excuses.
My safe storage bill would require that gun owners secure their firearms so they can not be accessed by children.
When we talk about “common sense gun safety legislation,” this is the very definition of common sense.

➡️Stupid. Idiotic. Dangerous policy.
I worked with Dr. Oz providing care for patients during open heart surgery.
If he thinks “political leaders” should help direct life-or-death clinical decisions, I’d like him to clarify where they should stand at the OR table, and how best they should instruct staff to proceed.
Someone read my post from this morning, restacked the scrub shelf from tall to small, *and* added labels to clarify the colored twill size-coding system.
BEHOLD, SOCIAL MEDIA IS A FORCE FOR GOOD.
I went to an anesthesiology conference yesterday and the hotel where the meeting was being hosted removed all the coffee carafes after 10:30am.
No coffee. AT A CONFERENCE FOR ANESTHESIOLOGISTS.
Folks. Know your audience.
This is how John Fetterman showed up to preside over the Senate yesterday.
Imagine a doctor showing up to care for their patients like this.
Imagine a lawyer showing up to defend you in court like this.
Imagine a pilot flying a plane like this.
Imagine anyone else doing this.
There’s an inherent bias in the voucher argument that private school educations are presumptively superior.
This has not been demonstrated in the results.
Students accessing vouchers have demonstrated “some of the largest tests score drops ever seen.”
"The spread of the novel coronavirus underlines 2 facts. The 1st is that the health of individuals is intimately dependent on the health of the community at large. And the 2nd is that we need our government and proactive, science-based public health policy to protect us all."
Legislation has been introduced in the Georgia Senate with to ban any public entity from requiring *any* vaccination as a precondition for services or facility access, wiping out the preexisting standards.

I know everyone is interested in the spectacle of the Trump Veepstakes right now, but I think it’s important to remember why it is that Trump needs a new running mate this time around, and the reasons his original VP now refuses to endorse him.
JD Vance says Trump's VP vetting materials include a question about whether any of the prospective candidates have "committed a crime" or lied. The irony!
Floored to learn I’ve been named “State Legislator of the Year” by the Georgia Chapter of the

I’m blessed to be able to work alongside such brave, dedicated advocates, committed to building healthier, safer communities and a brighter future for all our children.
The Buffalo gunman - an 18-year-old - extensively researched mass shootings at a mosque in New Zealand and at a summer camp in Norway. Since then, both countries have banned assault rifles.
Meanwhile, hundreds of mass shootings later, America is making them easier to access.
How it started / How it's going
Spent a bit of time this weekend with hammer and nails in CLOB 611-G.
It's not totally done yet (still need a bookshelf and some storage) but I think we‘ve made a reasonably welcoming space for colleages, advocates, and constituents! Come visit!
There are some angry that the CDC is “reversing recommendations” on masks.
But if a meteorologist told you last week that it was sunny, then tells you today to pack an umbrella, they’re not “flip-flopping,” they’re giving you the most up-to-date information to keep you dry.
@dscarr55
I am glad that you have survived every communicable disease since polio, but suspect that it wasn’t simply because of having “common sense.” As an anesthetist I know you understand that we prepare for every contingency. I wish you well and hope you and your family stay safe.
Such an honor to welcome Leader

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
“Today, Georgia lawmakers are announcing the creation of the state’s first formal Legislative Asian American Pacific Islander (
#AAPI
) Caucus.
Notably, as of 2023 Georgia will have the most AAPI lawmakers of any state legislature in the nation.”
It's official. We did it!
Thank you to everyone for being an integral part of our democracy. You voted even when it wasn’t easy, in the face of great challenge and uncertainty. I am humbled by your support, and warmed by the conviction that our brightest days lie ahead. Onward!
My statement on SB140:
"Simply put, SB140 amounts to state-mandated malpractice.
Why should politicians be able to pass laws that supersede established medical care standards?
And what patient would prefer their medical care be directed by a politician rather than a doctor?"
A GA Republican talks about “letting doctors do their jobs” and “trusting the science,” noting it is “always the wrong answer” to have gov’t dictate clinical care standards. *
(* Except on abortion, safety of mifepristone, childhood vaccines, UNOS recs for organ transplants…)
On Newsmax, Dr. Rich McCormick, a GOP congressman and member of the doctor's caucus, claim "there was no benefit" to covid vaccines -- a lie that is easily disproven by, among other things, the fact that American life pretty much got back to normal after the vaccine rollout
How is it responsible to include his “fully vaccinated” status in the headline (the only thing many people read) and not include the critical fact that he was immunocompromised due to multiple myeloma?
The messaging on this is *extremely* important.
Breaking News: Colin Powell has died at 84 of Covid-19. He was fully vaccinated, his family said.
In four decades of public life, he served in top national security roles and helped pave the way for the war in Iraq.
Packing up my Senate desk, stale Girl Scout cookies and all.
Some remain incredulous that I’d run for what they call a “lower” seat after being gerrymandered.
But they’re telling on themselves and their view of why we run for office.
We should run for the chance to serve.

Almost a year ago, we launched our campaign for the Georgia House of Representatives.
I did so on the conviction that no matter the obstacles, and no matter the challenges we’d already faced, my commitment to serving our community in the state legislature was worth the fight.
We have to relinquish the idea that all “freedoms” should be absolute. Not all limits on “freedom” are bad or extreme.
In fact, MOST public safety measures balance targeted limits in freedom w/ harm reduction.
Seatbelt laws, speed limits, TSA checks, showing ID to buy alcohol…
"This isn’t about taking away anyone’s rights. It’s about protecting children. It’s about protecting families. It’s about protecting communities. It’s about protecting our freedoms to go to school, to a grocery store, to go to church without being shot and killed,"

Here's a map of every private school in GA.
As you can see, there are large swaths with little to no access to a private school (particularly given that these schools, unlike public schools, are not obligated to provide transport).
School vouchers sell out rural GA's students.

Thank you so much Julia Louis Dreyfuss for your support! 👊🏼
I’m also encouraged that so many understand the vital importance of state legislative elections, instead of dismissing these as merely “down ballot” races.
The fight for abortion acesss now lives in the state houses.
It's official.
The fight for reproductive freedom is now in the hands of state legislatures.
I'm matching $10K in donations to these 11 candidates in key states where abortion is on the line.
Please donate here to get matched & let me know when you do:
This week John Oliver discussed Medicaid work requirement programs (like GA Pathways) and how poorly they perform.
Arkansas in fact suspended its work requirement after < 1 year and has since fully expanded Medicaid.
But here in GA, apparently ego and intransigence trump facts.
A Texas House committee just advanced legislation that would raise the age at which an AR-15 can be bought, from 18 to 21.
Two Republican members had the moral courage to do what was right and join Democrats in the 8-5 vote.
Georgia, we can do this too.
Such an honor to have

Gun violence is a public health crisis, and there is ample common ground for legislative action to keep our communities safer.

Absolutely. We’ve already had a will in place for over 13 years—POA, executors, all of it—but in this moment we wanted to make the bench deeper.
Yes, the compressed runoff timeline, high barriers to absentee voting, and resultant long lines have made it MUCH harder for many voters to cast a ballot, including healthcare workers, first responders, Georgians working multiple jobs, and Georgians living/learning out of state.
Georgia Election Runoff. Tried to vote again but it’s a 2 hour wait. Tried last night & it was 3 hr wait. Not the most convenient if you work in healthcare. I’ll try again election day.

The idea of “discretionary late term abortions” is inflammatory anti-choice fiction.
Later abortions are usually decisions made in the setting of devastating medical diagnoses.
Discussing a “political sweet spot” involving banning medical care in such situations is abhorrent.

Gun violence is the
#1
cause of pediatric death in this country.
If a child dies in the U.S., the most likely reason is that they were shot.
As governor, Kemp escalated that risk by loosening regulation and increasing the number of guns flooding our streets.
He needs to go.
