Interrupting the doom and gloom of your TL to announce my baby boy was born Saturday night 7lbs 9oz. Other than witnessing a covid drill at the hospital during our stay and a brief stint in the NICU for baby, it was a safe and uneventful birth. 1/2
It seems my assumption that I would have a quiet transition was naïve. So I will attempt to provide whatever insight I can… using language the internet understands lol🧵

it’s a risk. and that's ok. I look forward to new opportunities and new ways to tell stories. and to keep finding ways to make space and center the voices of those who have been traditionally left out! Our conversation isn’t over. Stay tuned as we say in radio ;)
In the meantime I gotta take care of these little kids for a bit. Throw some snow balls. Prepare to announce what I have in store next. It’s a good thing. promise.
There is little difference between white and Black Americans on reluctance to take the coronavirus vaccine, a new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll finds.
73% of Black people and 70% of white people say they plan to get the vaccine or have done so already.
Listening to finance types give “advice” to people right now is maddening. Mass job loss, economic destabilization and the bottom falling out of an already adhoc child care system would not have been solved by an emergency savings account.
I started working at
@NPR
when I was barely old enough to drive a car. It’s time. And it feels good to leave this particular stage on my own terms. In fact this is my last week 😳 4/5
I love my job. I love the listeners of
@NPR
and the people who make it. Alongside that truth, I am ready to stretch my wings and try something new. 2/5
No doubt leaving
@npratc
is a risk. It’s in the Library of Congress! It has been an honor to be part of this legacy of service and to work with the incredible hosts, producers and editors who make it. Thanks for letting me be part of its story.

The people who are speaking out are not "trouble makers". They care deeply about the companies where they work. They WANT to stay. They want to make things better.
This week I would love to hear from folks who have open producer jobs. I have a wonderful talented
@CNNPlus
team. They deserve a chance to show the world more of what they can do!

Every single word of my announcement is true. I am leaving of my own accord with no malice or resentment. I have had a great run with a company full of people I respect and admire. And I am ready to try something new.
I also understand that 4 hosts leaving in a year – three of them POC women– is a red flag as my co host
@arishapiro
underscored earlier this week. I appreciate him taking it upon himself to raise it.
I want to give a shout out to my black and brown colleagues
@NPR
who work hard to make the network live up to its ideals and mission. The Emancipation reading— initiated and executed through their talents — reminded me of what’s possible in the bleakest times.
@nprkyoung
🙏🏾
I can’t speak for all POC – but I want to be clear. I do not have to. Our experiences at the company vary and there are some common threads. A number of people have been waving their hands in the air trying to draw attention to them. check the threads. they are not hiding!
Imagine how good a Black woman has to be to get the job of asking the president questions. Just think about how much better she has to be than everyone around her. Then imagine having to put up w/ this racist & misogynistic nonsense.
@Yamiche
is the best & deserves better.
Ove the years that has changed and for the better! There are many amazing talented black and brown people in front of the camera/mic, in high profile gigs, are executives and more.
Trust, you have the same issues brewing (pay equity, cultural exclusion, problems of recruitment and retention). You are not immune and you are not doing all that much better.

My path through public media and frankly journalism has of course not been all roses. There have been many many times when I was the only person of color “on the campaign bus” “at the press conference” “ at the table” “on the sunday show” and all that entails.
Moreover some of these issues permeate the public media system – yes stations AND yes your favorite podcast companies that have sprung from that system. While the media reporting on this has been to treat each as a problem in isolation that is not the case.
The flipside is that plenty of voices are speaking out about the work that still needs to be done. Call them! Yes this is for you media reporters. It's also for public media managers, podcast companies and news media companies dipping into audio.
real talk: what you can't see in this picture is the nanny who took it, the co-worker/parent sharing the cost of the nanny with me. my producers working on booking the names on the chalkboard behind me... it takes a village y'all.

Jason Carter is giving a funny, loving and moving eulogy. He is painting a picture of Rosalynn Carter as a person -- not only a partner. It is moving and riveting. A wonderful farewell to his grandmother.

I will never believe rumors about a “difficult” woman in Hollywood again. I will continue to assume the worst when I see a BIPOC character I love written into the ground. Don’t -@ me. 🤷🏾♀️
Robert Siegel taught me much of what I know about hosting

, interviewing and how to be a good colleague. I’m going to miss him in Studio 31. In fact I am still not sure how I’ll do it without him!

I am learning all the time the differences between cable and public radio. Repetition is built into the model of the first. But audio people? THEY notice repetition. And Have Thoughts™️

The nation’s top diplomat, former head of an “intelligence” agency & advisor to a POTUS currently embroiled in an impeachment trial over ::checks notes:: “Ukraine” expresses shock(!) a reporter *might* ask questions about...Ukraine? Still no apology for calling her a liar.

I reviewed emails between

Kelly asked 11 substantive Qs on Iran. 11! And turned to Urkraine.
I asked aide for documentation/clarification. No reply.
