While Cheval Blanc is located in Saint Emilion, it is right on the Pomerol border and around a third of the terroir for Cheval Blanc's vineyards is very similar to the top estates in Pomerol. This helps to explain why Cheval Blanc's wines can be so opulent (like Pomerol)!

Do you enjoy second wines? The quality of many second wines in Bordeaux has gone up dramatically since producers are using a more strict selection for the top wines. While this wine will easily last another 15 years or so, it was already a joy to taste!

The 1986 Cheval Blanc was one of two Cheval Blanc vintages included in our 9-bottle Bordeaux tasting. While this wine did not finish in the top 3 (unlike the 1990 Cheval Blanc), this 1986 Cheval Blanc would be wine of the night on most nights!

We recently tasted the 1990 Latour. Dominant descriptors included blackcurrant, blackberry, tobacco, cedar, cigar smoke and a gravelly/minerality character. On the palate, this wine was regal and refined, but in a powerful, muscular way. Dark, brooding and incredibly complex!
