๐๐ With great excitement (and serendipitous timing), I can reveal the cover of my poetry collection for children (KS1 +), publishing on 6th March 2025 with
@OtterBarryBooks
. Thanks so much to Kate Sheppard for the deliciously juicy illustration. **Pre-orders are open**! โฌ๏ธ๐๐
Extremely excited and proud to share the news that I signed a contract this week with
@OtterBarryBooks
, for my first collection of children's poetry! After some false starts along the way, I am over the moon that my publishing journey starts here ๐๐

I have writing news! ๐๐๐
Thrilled to bits to share that I will have a children's poetry collection published by
@BeirBuaKids
next year! Look out for a funny, cheeky, cuddly book for small (and big!) people, in 2023!
Today I'm kind of weary
I've not had enough sleep
I was finding rhymes for ice cream
instead of counting sheep.
My poem's forming nicely
though I'm tired and melancholic
I think it's time to fess up -
I'm a raging rhymeaholic!

My mum is nearly 86, lives 200ish miles away, and loves poetry. I have bought a copy of this for me, and one for her, so we can both read a poem a day, and message each other about it โค๏ธ๐
Unfortunately, I found out on WBD that my first children's poetry collection, The Last Onesie, will now not be published, due to the unavoidable closure of the press. I'm disappointed, but these things happen, & I am staying positive. Onwards, onwards on the poetry rollercoaster!
My children's poetry collection now has a title, and a potential cover (thanks to a wonderful professional illustrator), and I feel a little like I'm expecting another baby!
The one new lady at my writing group this morning said, "Can I read my poem?" then told us she'd never read her poetry out to anyone before, and honestly, I feel emotional even typing this โฅ๏ธ
(She did it, it was lovely, we applauded her.)
The word is out! So thrilled and proud to be part of this absolutely stunning book. Packed with brilliant classics, fresh new words by poetry friends, and
@chrisriddell50
illustrations! Available to pre-order, out 14th Sept. Very excited about this, indeed! Thank you

My 5yo on seeing 'The Snowman' printed kitchen roll, for the first time - absolute awe in his little eyes, he touches the pictures, looks at us and says, with wonder: How is this possible?!!โค๏ธโ๏ธโค๏ธ
I have just booked a two-night stay on my own in a lovely pub B&B, as a mini writing retreat. It took me a while to talk myself out of the guilt, but I am so looking forward to it, plus they've given me a free upgrade to a superior room with 'the best desk'.โ๏ธ๐
Happy to say that my poem What the Cat Knows (first published in
@TheDirigible
) will be broadcast on
@BBCRadioDerby
@BBCUpload
on Wednesday 26th ๐. I'll post a link here as soon as I can. Hurrah for poems!
Happy Publication Day to this stunning book! I have a hungry bunyip lurking inside, and a cautionary tale involving salt, alongside poems by wonderful poetry friends. Congratulations

Drew this 5 years ago, waiting for my littlest one to arrive. I don't know where the original went, but I'm glad I took a photo. I like it. An offhand comment from a TA in high school revisits whenever I do any kind of art & knocks me a little bit, all over again. Words matter.
Contacted today by a sch saying I've been highly recommended by another sch. This means a lot. It can be hard to get emails seen by the right people & to 'sell' just what we do as poets in schools. If you're a teacher who spreads the word & passes on the poetry message - thanks!
Gorgeous post today ๐ฆ
@thecaterpilla20
has been a dream pub since I started writing poetry for children last Autumn, and I made it in, just in time! So happy to be in such a beautiful issue ๐งก
This is a tired poet. It has been QUITE A WEEK. Actually, almost three weeks of things being *a bit pants* (official poetry term). But, it is Friday, and it turns out that my new reading chair also does gin. Which is nice.
I encouraged a lovely lady from my writing group to submit a poem she wrote & illustrated some time ago, to
@TheDirigible
& it was accepted! It's her first published children's poem & she's thrilled. She isn't on socials but I will pass on any comments ๐
A Weds rejection was followed by three Thurs Yeses โบ. Thank you
@TheToyPress
&
@TheDirigible
for your uplifting emails! Excited to fly in the Anniversary balloon, & I can't wait to hold Issue One of The Toy in my hand. Hurrah for children's poetry, and the new kids on the block!
Very chuffed and grateful to be published again by
@NorthGravy
, with my first ever published piece of childrenโs fiction. This issue looks like an absolute beaut! ๐

! What a gorgeous thing this
@TheDirigible
anthology is. As Mary Poppins would say, it is practically perfect in every way ๐ฅฐ Very proud to have two poems inside.๐
I really ought to bin/shred/bury the two contracts I signed, for books which never came to be (both small presses had to close). The poetry gods made their decisions, and now new exciting things are afoot! Keep the faith,

Trying to push myself, believe in myself and nudge my way out of my comfort zone, bit by writerly bit. Sent a poem I wrote to my son's school, in case they wanted it for the newsletter, and not only are they using it, but they've asked me in for an author visit!
Not feeling too super with Covid (not the worst thing September threw at us), but I do have this.
โค๏ธ๐๐ Full of delicious poems, some of them by lovely friends. Hurrah for the healing powers of poetry.

Popped into a charity shop this morning and came out with two new friends to take to school. Name suggestions, please! Preferably at least one of them just one syllable (poetry reasons!).
Had a poem accepted by an online mag (for adults) which has featured my poems twice before. Unusually, I submitted a poem I wrote for children, that I felt had the right vibe for the mag, and could be read from both the parent/child pov. Feels like an exciting crossover!

Winner to be announced later tonight ๐ข
My 6yo: Why are you always so excited about Gods and Monsters?
Me: Because it's a big, shiny book in shops, and I'm in it.
6yo: I didn't know it was a poetry book! (finds my name with glee)
Me: Have you heard of Shakespeare?
6yo: Yes
Me: He's in it too!
6yo: (mouth open, agog) ๐ค
In today's episode of 'My 5yo Never Says Good Morning', he walked in and said "Each peach pear plum, I smell my lovely mum!" โค๏ธ (I think there's a fee-fi-fo-fum mash-up going on, here!)

Today I got to stand in the school hall where decades ago I performed as a terrified 8yo, in The Pobble Who Has No Toes. This time I smiled, I laughed, and I *chose* to perform poems I had written, to children who laughed along with me. We can do anything we put our minds to โค๏ธ
Twitter friends! Both primary schools I visited for WBD said they'd like a list of recommended children's poetry books, for their libraries. I know what I'd choose, but I'd like your suggestions, please. ๐
Been a flat few days, but this weekend I've been asked to be part of a grown-up poetry anthology, and to send audio of 2 children's poems to a mag in Hong Kong. Things are looking up ๐
We travelled to school on twelve-legged rainbow kangaroos, smelled darkness, tasted friendship, and I may or may not have eaten rabbit poo in assembly ๐ A really fun, dynamic day in school. 15 more copies of Cornflakes and Gravy now have new homes, too ๐คฉ

A joyful car ride with the 6yo today thanks to the CD which came with this fab book. He listened intently; I laughed out loud several times. Great for kids, and a masterclass in performance for kids' poets!
Holding a 'Fun Festive Poems' event in my village, tomorrow, for primary age children. It's looking like it may be a small turnout, but it's in a gorgeous little venue, and I am SO looking forward to it ๐โจ๏ธ๐

First time co-organising a Festival of Words - done โ๏ธ & we didn't do it by halves! - 4 days of wonderful wordiness & fun! I have wine, chocolates, a few grateful (& relieved!) tears & a lot of proud happy feelings. Happy Mother's Day & Happy Swadlincote Festival of Words 2024!
Things my 4yo has said this week, which should be book titles:
Is Heaven Real?
The Killer Bees Will Break Your Heart.
Do You Like Cake More Than Lego?

everyone! I am close to home today, feeling the most relaxed I have ever felt next to the Big Blue Apparatus! Have a good one! ๐ซ๐ซ๐๐๐ญ

At After-school Poetry Club, a Y2 child proudly showed me the poetry book she had chosen from the school library, then read What is Pink? by Christina Rossetti to everyone (her favourite). She had never had a poetry book out from the library before coming to Poetry Club ๐ ๐ฅน
