Saw a brand new Kia EV6 with a Trump-Vance 2024 bumper sticker in a local parking lot. The contrast amused me; I'll admit to an odd sense of humor. I didn't snap a photo because the owner was in the vehicle and I didn't want a confrontation.

Amy - Please take this as being said with tremendous empathy for the effect that the nuclear energy system in Japan failed you and your neighbors. Tucker is right that we cannot send anyone in to certain areas of a nuclear power plant in the event of an accident. But virtually all of those areas are inaccessible during reactor operation. The accident will make those limited areas inaccessible for a very long time – perhaps forever – but almost all of the power plant will remain accessible and reasonably safe for limited periods of time. The fact that no one is allowed in the spaces where radiation will be mostly contained is part of what limits the consequences of a nuclear reactor accident. It's a feature of the way we build, operate and oversee the power source.

@timothyjwyant Nucleation Capital's portfolio is publicly accessible from our web site. Not far from the top of the page, you can find a button labeled "See Our Portfolio."

Another interesting plank in their opposition platform is that the approvals process will take a long time. That process is one of the targets of Keir Starmer's promise to take on the blockers - like the Green Party.

@JohnSmith410846 @Archadius7 @walther_jeff Admittedly, my buddy doesn’t live in a 2 bedroom home or anything close to an RV.

@JohnSmith410846 @Archadius7 @walther_jeff It’s nice to have a whole house generator when you also have piped gas. The numbers can get a little less advantageous with gasoline or propane as the generator fuel. A friend burned $1,400 worth of propane during a 7 day outage

I probably haven't written this often enough, but if you want to keep up with nuclear news while scrolling here, you should be following @HopfJames . He's not the only one, but his work is very useful.

@AngelicaOung @fermienergia Under estimation is a significant contributor to the "over budget" accusation against nuclear energy. All cost estimates should be heavily caveated and dated until AFTER final investment decisions and signed delivery contracts. Those are the costs and schedules that matter

Completely off the nuclear/energy topic normally found here. I was fascinated to learn about a local fishing tradition with perhaps the shortest open season of any managed catch - this year it lasted just 17 minutes. The sturgeon spear season drew 500 fishers and a supporting cast of thousands to a tiny town on Michigan's Black Lake. My gift to you is the illustrated story from the New York Times.

@BillWoo66472598 You're right. Natural gas provided the heat for all steam produced when the sun was not shining.

@Archadius7 @walther_jeff I assume that your system includes a substantial storage battery. Lights are easy, especially with LED tech. Does your oven, air conditioner, water heater, refrigerator, freezer, television, and computer work at night as well? How about dryer, washer, and dishwasher?

@Archadius7 Complex micro-reactors are at a real disadvantage. That's why I like the ones whose developers have focused on simplifying their designs. Reducing the need for systems, structures and components reduces cost and complexity.
