I think Cavalier was Athrun brainchild.. We look forward to an explanation in the next OVA or if there is Seed Justice dealing with this topic
Athrun created Tori at a young age. He would have been an engineer too if he did not join ZAFT. I guess his knowledge about engineering did not fade in the air lol. Just look him teaching these guys how to fix AA. With his knowledge, I firmly believe Cavalier is his brainchild.

I know the plot had to have Athrun lash out at the people he loves most, but dude, you're really hurting them. And while he was brutal to Cagalli, I think he said more unforgivable things to Kira "you have more blood on your hands than anyone"
