Where are all the Americans that ask “what if an ambulance needs to get through” when protesters block a street or highway?
People *intentionally* blocking help so it can’t get through doesn’t actually bother you? Oh ok.
Biden admin’s abandoned us.
Get some high quality masks, do your shopping online, order items for quick pick up, order food carry out, try to distance in public, etc.

I don’t know if y’all remember. But Zoom was sued for putting live transcription behind a paywall.
Putting accessibility functionality behind a paywall is bad. Don’t do it. You’ll probably get sued.
Disabled people shouldn’t have to pay for accessibility. It’s a human right.
I am BEGGING
@Zoom
to make captions accessible. I am TIRED of asking meeting hosts to enable captions. This has gone on for far too long and I am completely out of patience. I shouldn't have to beg for access. 🤬
Do you also ask people why they use a cane? Wheelchair? Glasses? Crutches? Hearing aids? Cochlear implants? Disabled parking placard? Dentures? Rollator? Walker? Prosthetic arm or leg? Wrist or ankle braces? Compression socks? Any other accessibility aid? Don’t.
I went on vacation for a few days and twice I saw two people at separate times walk into the elevator with a mask on. I asked them if they were sick.
They looked a little surprised and both people at separate times said the same thing, that they didn’t want to get sick.

This is terrible and sets precedent that will embolden anti-maskers to harass and abuse disabled people in public.
As much as they love to say "OF COURSE NOT ACTUALLY DISABLED PEOPLE" they never know just by looking at us if we're disabled.
This is bad, bad, bad.
"lf a person refused to (unmask), that right there should cause you some sense of alarm."
NYC Mayor Eric Adams continues to encourage businesses to request customers to unmask. This is ableist, puts people's health at risk, and is NOT required by law.
50% of people killed by law enforcement are disabled. More than half of Black disabled people have been arrested by 28, 2x the risk in comparison to white disabled people.
We KNOW cops have racial and ableist biases. We should not be giving them more power against these groups.
As a Disabled software engineer directly affected by this blatantly inaccessible voice tweet feature, it is incredibly soul crushing to see a massive company with endless resources release shit like this and say "We'll figure it out later."

Hey
@Zoom
, why does a meeting host have to be the one to enable captions in meetings? This causes so many uncomfortable problems for people that rely on captions. Attendees shouldn’t have to ask permission for accessibility.
Unpopular opinion:
Telling young people to work-life balance is actively harmful. Your 20’s are the best time to grind. You have lots of energy and few responsibilities.
a good 20’s grind creates the space to chill in your 30’s and beyond

Hey
@zoom_us
do y’all plan on making it possible to have live captions always enabled? I constantly have to remind people to enable them so I can turn them on for myself and it gets more and more uncomfortable every time. This would be a big accessibility improvement.
“Just buy ingredients”
You do know disabled people get judged for that shit too right? We buy pre-cut fruits or veggies and get told we’re the reason the planet is dying

The reason disabled people speak up on this stuff to say “that doesn’t work for me” is because treatment that *does* work for us is stigmatized by blanket advice like: Just try yoga! Just drink more water! This advice is constantly yelled at us, almost always unsolicited too.

You're not working to dismantle an ableist system. You're strengthening it. You're empowering people who share that "we can do it later" mentality. You're undoing all the work and energy I've put into educating other software engineers on this topic.

Disabled people have been treated like literal garbage to be thrown away by the US government, and you expect every bit of our advocacy to be polite? You can take your hurt feelings and fuck off too 🖕🏻
Just to follow up: the brand of person I was referring to is someone who tells people to fuck off if they choose to work from home while sick. I don’t find that persuasive, I find it unhinged.

the beauty of living in society is random contact. i feel sad for you that you don't engage more. also imagine a world where that deaf person is further isolated. it's not about flapping their hands to ask to be included.
So, thanks for not only shitting on the Disabled people who can't use this feature, but also thanks for shitting on the people doing accessibility education.
YOU'RE DOING GREAT.

If frontend development is sooo easy, tech bros wouldn’t complain about things like accessibility. They probably don’t even consider it part of frontend development because they’re not even thinking about it. It’s just completely absent from their thought process.
Hey,
@Zoom
! 👋🏻
Been a while since I asked, but I’m wondering when y’all will make it possible for meeting attendees to use captions without having to ask a host to turn them on EVERY meeting?
Thanks a bunch,
A tired deaf person
If you’re currently struggling to do the things you love because of physical and/or mental health issues, I want you to know you’re not alone. I’m right there with you and sometimes it feels like everyone else is passing you by. But we all have different paces and it’s okay. 💖
Did some quick accessibility tests on . I am disappointed, but not surprised.
The "toolbar for a wysiwyg editor" has buttons with no Accessible Name.
Inaccessible UI isn't "production-grade code". Unless "the bar you set for yourself" is low.
produces the kind of production-grade code that we'd want to ship in our own

products.
That was the bar we set for ourselves.
At the moment it can output HTML with

and React w/

UI.
I applied for an income driven repayment plan because I can’t afford a $460/mo payment, so Aidvantage approved my application and they raised the payment to $563/mo.
Hi, I am “someone”
And yes I believe the facts in the link I gave you are true because I’ve verified all the ones I could against public and readily available information.
With all due respect, why do you act like such a self righteous bitch baby?
Someone just sent me a link with "the facts". Thank you; but I have a question. Do you believe that links to things on the internet are always true, impartial, in context, and complete? Or do you agree with me that skepticism is generally warranted?

It took me over half a decade to start making 6 figures in tech. I was in school for several years and had to work several jobs to get there. Please don’t be discouraged if you don’t achieve people’s arbitrary "you can do it in so little time!" claims. 💖
I'm in a meeting but I can't understand what's going on unless the meeting host has paid an absurd fee *and* turned on live transcription in their browser settings *and* enabled them for the meeting

I have a challenge for the thousands of people that liked this.
Set your phone’s text size to the largest and use all your apps like that for one week.
You’ll find many of them don’t work. Even bank and food apps get accessibility wrong.
Hot take: There’s a finite amount of time for ‘pensioners’ to generate sympathy from this ‘discrimination’. Mobile phones were introduced 51 years ago, smart phones were introduced 32 years ago. At some point it becomes a dogmatic self-sabotaging lifestyle choice.
@bibicosplays
And like why are they so convinced we're making it all up? I can simply state the fact, "I'm in pain every single day," and all their assumptions that follow are terrible. Why are we not seen as credible narrators of our own lives?
Not only are links now inaccessible to screen reader and keyboard users, they’re also inaccessible to speech recognition users.
The aria-label can be long and complicated, and isn’t visible. This means speech rec. users can’t know what to say to have their device open a link.
The X/Twitter update to remove headlines from link previews has also completely broken their accessibility.
The link/image can't be tabbed to with the keyboard, and it's been totally hidden from screen readers.
Here's how to make your links accessible until it's fixed (thread)
"Juniors shouldn’t touch production" is a terrible take for a million reasons.

I need y'all to see the connections to disability justice here. Thousands of Palestinians have been disabled by Israel's attacks on Gaza.
How are they supposed to travel out of active areas in a few hours? What part of Gaza isn't actively being attacked? How long will that last?
These pauses will help get civilians to safer areas away from active fighting.
They are a step in the right direction.
You have my word: I will continue to advocate for civilian safety and focus on increasing aid to alleviate the suffering of the people of Gaza.
I wish people would stop putting SEO and accessibility on the same level. They are not on the same level. Accessibility is about other people. SEO is about you. Accessibility is more important than SEO and deserves more effort.
Claiming that someone is attention-seeking when they say they have a mental/physical condition is ableist. Every time. It’s a microaggression. Stop it.
What's happening in Palestine is a disability issue.
It's a mass disabling event, and they do not have what they need to care for disabled people.
There is no disability justice without a

Working (suffering) through a disability and keeping it secret is not inspiring. It’s a huge systemic issue & we should be talking about how to fix it, not normalizing Disabled people working themselves to literal death. Listen to Disabled ppl rn. Especially Black Disabled ppl.
There’s no “feeling” left behind. Disabled people have been abandoned for dead, and that’s a factual statement.
This isn’t just about policy. It’s life or death. And you’re all abandoning us for dead too because you won’t listen.
This is scary. People looking to throw democracy away because they are upset about a policy.
I appreciate being upset & feeling left behind. I don’t understand how they thing withholding a vote will make things better. The message it sends is they are ok with a dictatorship.

Y’all, please stop holding accessibility conversations on Clubhouse. It is not an accessible platform. As someone in accessibility who can’t consume content on that platform, seeing this from other accessibility folks is disheartening and hurts.
If any of the like, repost, etc. buttons are completely replaced with swipe gestures and no click-like function, they will be totally unusable by mobile screen reader users.
iOS 17 VoiceOver for example has no basic swipe-equivalent gesture:
UPDATE: X's current plan is to remove the engagement buttons (like, repost, etc.) from the main timeline and REPLACE them with gestures.
e.g. Double tap to like, swipe to reply.
Nothing’s official but they’re offering me the position and I verbally accepted yesterday evening! I can finally start putting all my finances back together and eating normally again. 😭
I’ve always been **strongly** judged for not liking pair programming unless the intent is teaching or unblocking.
I don’t like it because it’s incompatible with how my brain works. I can’t think. My mind is most occupied with masking & trying to hear what’s said.
Feedback has been given to
@Zoom
about this innumerable times. At this point, the only thing I can take from this is that they don't care about how damaging their shitty captions are to disabled and neurodivergent people. All
@Zoom
does is enable microagressions.
No strong shade to OP. I’m just really tired of blanket statements about how you “should” be living life or working. It never includes marginalized people. Ever
Indianapolis mayor’s salary might increase from $95,000 to $125,000.
Indiana governor’s salary is estimated to increase more than $80,000 next year.
And Indiana’s minimum wage is still $7.25, unchanged since 2009.
If they made minimum wage, they’d be more motivated to fix it.

It’s become apparent to me that people think Twitter Spaces are really accessible JUST because they have auto captions. This is not the case.
- Auto captions are not very accurate
- The captions are hard to read/see
- It’s all laggy
- You can’t really tell who’s speaking

I hate that you assume all disabled folks in need of power have the resources to deal with something like this. You’re abandoning them. Stop it. Do the right thing.
A lot of people talking about why remote work does or doesn’t work for them, and I have to add that it’s been great for my migraines and chronic pain. I can take breaks almost whenever I need to. I don’t have to deal with how overstimulating commuting and socializing is. 💖

Too many disabled white people weaponize their identity to get away with racism, or they have it weaponized for them by other white people.
Being disabled isn’t an excuse for being racist. To claim otherwise is infantilizing and only works to uphold a racist society.
UPDATE: Remember the “Karen Goes Crazy” video 2 yrs ago where a woman lunged at a Nigerian woman at a mall and then began to break down? Remember how the internet made fun of this woman and called her a "Karen" endlessly?

If it bothers you when American protestors do it in a way that DOESN’T cause harm, but it doesn’t bother you when people in Israel do it with the explicit intention of starving and killing the people of Gaza, you’re a hypocrite and on the wrong side of history.
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but self-diagnosis is valid when it’s all you have. It doesn’t mean you’re attention-seeking. Yes a diagnosis would be great but a lot can stand in the way of that: money, bias (gender, race, weight, etc.), transportation, insurance, and more.
This is a *prime* example of why non disabled people aren’t capable of gauging whether or not they bullied disabled people.
Non disabled people can’t even identify us. In this discourse, they’re referring to visually apparent disabilities. Not those of us with non apparent ones.
Disabled ppl are often separated from abled ppl. Ur seats are in specified areas, ur equipment for whatever the task, is in a specified area, etc, or almost any room. U were often in diff classrooms as well. U are calling us bullies for not lending friendship where we often dont-
I have seen an alarming number of people this week say things along the lines of "get therapy". We can’t toss that phrase around so easily when mental health care is so stigmatized and expensive.
🧵👇🏻
Idk why this person followed me today but let’s use their post as a learning moment.
1. It’s illegal to charge for accessibility. Just ask Zoom.
2. Accessibility isn’t expensive unless you treat it as an afterthought.
3. Disabled people aren’t a small percentage of users.
Got my first paycheck on my birthday and treated myself to a trip to Target yesterday. Going to Starbucks soon to pick up my free drink and also a cake pop. After how most of 2020 has gone, today feels really good. I’m thankful for all of you and your support!! 💖✨🎉💜🥰

The lack of action or communication on the shitty captioning system wears on my mental health.

As a disabled & neurodivergent person that also focuses on web accessibility, I shouldn't have to spend so much time advocating for my own accessibility at work.

makes my job so much harder and reduces the amount of energy I have to do work on accessibility for others.
