Bit late, but I wanted to post a thread with some roughs from the Satina teaser! I won't post everything since it was pretty intensive and a lot of older renders are MIA- but here's a few background demons. Lots of these little guys (blue animation was done by Hannah)
My friend
@GENC____
has had a rough year, so I drew this on behalf of me,
@weezerbloodorgy
and
@heydaigle
Hope you pull through man, you're the toughest guy I know.
Since the episode is out, I wanted to make a thread with some of the shots I worked on for Satina. Had a lot of fun executing and learning some new tricks, and I'm glad I could help bring these characters to life.
New haircut/icon. When he was young, my dad tattooed his face saying he would never take any other path but as an artist. I admired that conviction, and decided I wouldn't cut my hair until I felt like I'd made it, whatever that means. I think I'm happy, ten years later.
Some stream doodles this week. Drew some Satina stuff, and fanart of
@xXJONSHERINXx
's ratbasterdz and
@BrewsterToons
's good woods. Check them out they're cool cartoons from cool people. Oh and a moose.
This week's stream canvas. Featuring a half life scientist, lego lucia, big brother sonic, and
@heydaigle
doing her favorite thing in the whoooole world
Now that Nautibuoys is out, here's a thread of the rough animation I worked on. This was the one I started on. As you can see, ruffles' animation changed for the final cut, as it wasn't a very funny follow-up to Felonious' John Lennon walk.
I was done with the roughs for this by the time we actually decided to ask Zach if he could voice Melvin, so we just sent him that and I kept animating cleanup without anything specific in mind for his death rattle.
That's all for the episode, but here's a sendoff: this is the very first bit of animation I did for Satina when I contacted Hannah back before Glass of Water dropped. I'm eternally grateful that she gave me and the rest of the
@ScumHouse
crew a chance to make something together
Here's one of Lucia- A lot of stuff should've been fixed up on the rough and its a bit of a chop job, but Hannah made it pretty perfect with the cleanup
This longer shot shows more of them, it was difficult trying to find a decent balance of making them lively, but not visually distracting. A few landed better than others, but if it feels alive, mission accomplished
One of my favorite demons was this foreground guy based off one of our coolest supporters, Jesse. It was also nice adding a strobe- simple but effective, and adds to the industrial feel of hell
Here's a few more BG demons, they got rearranged and hannah added a few more to fill out the shot, but I'm glad the little joke of an old lady getting carded is still in
Here's an example of the actual canvas size. It was fun contrasting War's snappier, stronger movements with death's more liquidy movements. The whole thing was a lot of fun to work on and there's still a lot left to see that I can't post quite yet
Now this shot was kind of a nightmare, it was meant to be a recycled wide shot where the four horsemen speak, but death by a thousand cuts meant a ton of little things like misaligned assets, size artifacting, even background framerates would be a recurring issue
As much animation a I did on Satina, it was rare for me to frequently draw the main devil herself. So this was a real joy to make. The monstrous expression when she bites was an Homage to John R. Dilworth's art, especially Smart Talk with Raisin.
Here's an example of animation being done with board and sound timing, with some things changed. The work between horsemen was split up so I ended up animating War and Death here. In this shot Famine was animated by
@Fantishow
Initially this line wasn't in the recording edited by
@MagusSerling
, but we managed to get
@hobby_shannon
to do a couple of takes for this cute little moment.
Another chop job, the goal was to get this one out pretty quickly, and barring some off model details and frames where it could've been pushed more, I'm happy with the gesture drawings. Another one saved in cleanup
(this was in the renders folder and I have no idea why lol)
Anyway, thanks to everyone who watched the teaser, and thanks to anyone inclined to peep this thread.
This is a shot I spent way too much time on, including all the hatch shading for her shadows in the final short. The final tweening of all the images was compiled by Shaggy, who also colored in a great deal of the shots and was the main man behind the video editing.
I also learned how to animate fire on this episode. Looked at lots of Samurai Jack for examples of more economical and time saving techniques (a lot of these are animated on threes). I can say I have a lot more respect for effects animation now.
