In his verbal comments in response to the SCOTUS leak, President Biden makes reference to a person’s choice to “abort a child”. He said it. It’s a child. So, Mr. President, please remind us again how your support for abortion is consistent with your Catholic Faith?
Okay, this is just too much. Now while waiting for my connecting flight, the First Officer on my next flight came over, introduced himself and we had a nice chat about St Thomas More. He also recognized I was a bishop. He asked for a blessing before the flight. Wow - a great day!
A great quote from St. Thomas More, whose feast day is today: “Nothing can come but what God wills. And I am very sure that whatever that be, however bad it may seem, it shall indeed be the best.” Consoling words for our times.
I know that many of you will want me to comment on the Holy Father’s new legislation regarding the traditional Latin Mass. I never respond precipitously to things like this. I need time to pray, reflect and study this new law so that I can respond in mercy, charity and truth.
Asking for prayers for my Mom, Joyce. We nearly lost her Tuesday from cardiac arrest. She is not doing well. Please pray for her peace of mind and soul. May our Lady enfold her in her motherly care. Jesus, I trust in you!
“Do not let your mind be troubled over anything that shall happen to me in this world. Nothing can come but what God wills. And I am very sure that whatever that be, however bad it may seem, it shall indeed be the best” - St. Thomas More to his daughter, Margaret
I’m sad to have to address this, but the Disciples of Lucifer of Salem, OR are planning a “Luciferian March for a One World Government” tomorrow (Sunday) at the Oregon State Capitol at 2:00 p.m. I am asking all Catholics of Oregon to pray a rosary at that hour.
The pilot on my flight today saw me in the gate area and came over to say hello and chat a bit. He recognized me as a bishop (ring and pectoral cross). He is a practicing Catholic. Never had that happen before. It was kind of refreshing. God bless him!
Prayers for my mom, Joyce, please. She seems to be entering her final journey from this life to the next. May our Lady comfort her and lead her safely home.
On the traditional Roman calendar (in the Extraordinary Form) Pentecost has its own octave, like the Octave of Easter. One way to recapture this tradition in the Ordinary Form is for priests to offer a Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit each day permitted this week.
I am TRULY looking forward to gathering with those who will participate in the Pontifical Solemn High Mass I will celebrate according to the 1962 Missal at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in D.C. Sat at 1:00 pm. EWTN to broadcast it live.
I am in Helena, MT today to ordain the new Bishop of Helena, the Most Rev. Austin Vetter. This is a peak sacramental experience for a Bishop - to place another priest into the line of Apostolic Succession. Please pray for Bishop-elect Vetter - that he be a holy shepherd.
As we pray for our new President, I offer my full and strong support for the statement issued today by Archbishop Gomez, President of the USCCB. Please read his full statement in the body of the Catholic Sentinel article attached.

on inauguration day: “May the Holy Spirit inspire in his heart a desire and a resolve to serve in the spirit of the Gospel, with a special concern for the most vulnerable among us."
30 years ago today. One of the happiest days of my life. Thank you, Heavenly Father, for calling me to participate in the ministerial Priesthood of your Son, Jesus Christ! And thank you for giving me the grace to say “yes.” May I continue to do so.

Please pray for the bishops of the United States as we begin our annual meeting with a full day of prayer and reflection in preparation for our efforts to address the current crisis. May the Holy Spirit give us wisdom and courage. Holy Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us!
The Holy Eucharist is the sign and source of our unity in the Church, i.e. profession of the same one Faith, participation in the same divine worship, especially the sacraments, and the same governance through Apostolic succession (Lumen Gentium, Vatican II)
“Do not, then, regard the eucharistic elements as ordinary bread and wine: they are in fact the body and blood of the Lord, as he himself has declared. Whatever your senses may tell you, be strong in faith” - St. Cyril of Jerusalem to neophytes
The Holy Spirit is moving, brothers and sisters! I see this everyday, especially with our young people. They’re asking the right questions and it brings me such joy. Don’t ever pass up an opportunity to talk to people about Jesus!

Concerning my last post - many people commenting on why not show the most reverent way of receiving on the tongue while kneeling. The fact is the Church gives the people several options. We have to deal with the reality in front of us and do the best we can. Step by step, people
St. Joseph humbly and quietly worked to support the Holy Family. In doing so he honors those who work hard and sacrifice for the good of their families, and elevates the dignity of human labor. St. Joseph, pray for us and the Church! Help to keep us faithful in difficult times
So proud of all these good people who defend life in its most vulnerable form, and show love for the women who struggle with fear and doubt in the face of an unplanned pregnancy.
This past Friday, Archbishop Sample led a prayer vigil to open 40 Days for Life in the Portland area. Please do all you can to support these pro-life efforts.
“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel." (Genesis 3:15)

Sunrise over Mt. Hood as I fly to Chicago for the retreat of US Bishops called for by the Pope. Pray for us that our response to the call to holiness will be renewed and that we will be faithful shepherds according to the mind and heart of Christ and his apostolic Church.
In these challenging times, let us all return to the daily recitation of the Holy Rosary. It is a powerful spiritual weapon in the midst of the spiritual warfare in which Christians are engaged.May Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary enfold us her her mantle of love and protection.
My prayers are offered for all the victims of the terrible train derailment south of Seattle. These things are always a tragedy, but this one hits very close to home.
Here is a short video prepared by our Office of Divine Worship demonstrating how to receive Holy Communion reverently under the Church’s current norms and approved options. Let us bring respect back to the Holy Eucharist.
“In her voyage across the ocean of this world, the Church is like a great ship being pounded by the waves of life’s different stresses. Our duty is not to abandon ship but to keep her on course.” Wise words for us today from St. Boniface, a great bishop and martyr.
TOTUS TUUS: “I am totally yours, and all that I have is yours; O glorious Virgin, blessed above all, place yourself as a seal upon my heart, for your love is stronger than death!” - St. Louis Marie de Montfort.
Today I am moved to pray for the repose of the soul of Bishop Mark F. Schmitt, who 28 years ago today ordained me a priest. I had the privilege of laying him to rest as his successor in the office of Bishop of Marquette. Rest In peace good and faithful servant!

Happy feast day of Pope St. John Paul II! “St. John Paul, pray for the Church, that she may be protected from the errors of our time, and grow in faith, hope and love. Amen.” Long live the magisterium of Pope St. John Paul II!
“Let us, then, be children no longer, tossed here and there, carried about by every wind of doctrine that originates in human trickery and skill in proposing error. Rather, let us profess the truth in love and grow to the full maturity of Christ the head.” (Ephesians 4)
St. Ignatius of Antioch gives advice to Polycarp that has also been on my heart ever since becoming a bishop myself: “Let unity, the greatest of all goods, be your preoccupation.” United we can change the world. Divided and Satan wins.
A scriptural reading tip for Holy Week. In additional to reading the Passion/Resurrection narratives in all four Gospels, I strongly urge everyone to read the Letter to the Hebrews. It gives a powerful explanation for what we celebrate this week. God bless you!
Please join me this Sunday (August 26) at St. Mary Cathedral in Portland at 11:00 am for a Mass for the Healing of Victims of Sexual Abuse. In the midst of the current crisis we must keep the victims and survivors in the forefront of our concern and prayers.

The ashes we receive symbolize our sincere intent to do penance for our sins, remind us that we must die to ourselves to live more fully for God and others, and remind us that we are dust and do not live for this world but for life eternal. A blessed Lent to all.
The Archdiocese of Portland has three seminarians studying in Rome (Dustin, Brent and Justin) plus one priest who is finishing his STL (Fr. Peter). They are all doing well. It is great to see them “face to face.” Pray for them - this is semester finals!

Merry Christmas! May Christ’s peace reign in your heart this day and every day! I will remember you at Mass again this morning as I did at Midnight Mass.
The video mentions bowing in reverence before receiving, “if you are not kneeling”. We can’t simply wish away the options and directives the Church gives. Again, step by step.
