I make fun of my own "forevers"! I know others make wiser decisions than I do. I know. But I am happy to embrace my own (laughable) imperfections. And here I am doing research on genomics, ageing, Alzheimer's. [now without a typo!]
My 14 yo daughter asked why I'm a scientist when I could make more money doing something else. I told her money, a big house and a flashy car are things we use in the present, but science is forever. 14 yo: But, Daddy, what if people just make fun of your science *forever*?

My impression is that even more thant 40% do. As of course they should. No one wants academia to be just a self-perpetuating bunch. We should help preparing people to be the most useful version of themselves in society at large.
More than 40% of postdoctoral researchers leave academia, according to a study of some 45,500 researchers’ careers
