Speaking about the symbolism of the War on Terror, the Taliban are planning to have their interim government inauguration ceremony on Saturday, September 11th, on the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

I believe the first—and only—party to truly betray the #Palestinians and throw them under the bus is not the #UAE, but your beloved #Ayatollahs!

The UAE was the first country to sign the Abraham Accords and betray the Palestinians. They claimed it was to prevent annexation. And now it is also the first Arab country to open the door for ethnic cleansing in Gaza. Will it pretend that this too is to prevent annexation?

Ukraine now faces two choices: either ignore the situation, as the Afghans did, and risk losing everything, or take responsibility and act decisively. I am confident that President Zelensky, unlike Afghanistan’s corrupt leaders, will do what is best for his nation and work to end this war. Ultimately, every war concludes either on the battlefield or at the negotiating table.

I remember when the Trump administration negotiated with the Taliban and completely cut out the Afghan government from those negotiations. Five year anniversary this month. Interested to see how this shakes out.

If I were Hollywood, I think the best spy movie I could make would be a portrayal of the U.S. intelligence failure in Afghanistan, where former Taliban leader Mullah Omar had been dead for two years and buried just a mile away from the U.S./NATO headquarters in Kandahar. Yet, the entire Western intelligence community, including the CIA, kept chasing him in Pakistan for another two years after his death.

I respect Amb @McFaul, but I must point out that individuals like him—whether influenced by the Beltway military-industrial complex or driven by liberal naivety—are part of the reason why Ukraine stands to lose more today than it would have a couple of years ago, when Kyiv held a stronger negotiating position in the midst of the war. This pattern has played out before—with Afghans, and now with Ukrainians. It’s always figures like them who make empty promises, claiming ‘America will always stand with you,’ only to shift the blame onto others when political realities change in Washington.

This is the kind of thinking that has hampered U.S. policy on Ukraine all along. No Ukrainian land has been "given." Rather, @SecDef stated that restoring the pre-2014 status quo is an unrealistic objective in this war. That's a statement of the obvious.

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, ironically, it hasn’t just been our adversaries who exploited our political ambiguity—taking advantage of our tendency to take one step forward and two steps back—but also our allies, who have used this vulnerability to avoid contributing fully to our collective security. For the first time, I believe the Europeans now understand that we mean what we say.

These welcome announcements from @SecDef suggest that this time really is different for transatlantic relations. Beyond the immediate implications, @SecDef seems to imply that the United States will not make new security guarantees in Europe and will require European allies to take a greater share of responsibility for conventional deterrence and defense, in addition to spending more. Burden shifting, not just burden sharing.

I’m not a pessimist, but let me say this: NATO’s promise to Ukraine was always one of those commitments that everyone within the alliance knew, deep down, would never materialize—including Zelenskyy himself. This wasn’t self-deception; it was a deliberate strategy, intended to create hope and bolster efforts to win the war.

Quietly, Hegseth announces a major policy change, ruling out Ukraine joining NATO. This is a complete capitulation to Putin, justifying his wars of aggression starting with Georgia in 2008. This will embolden Putin and undermine the interests of peace in Ukraine and Europe. A major blow to U.S. national security.
