Coachella Valley floor got 1-2 inches more rain during Hilary compared to the Borrego Valley (we are one valley south) of Coachella. Resulting in a much bigger display of purple verbena & desert sunflowers. This dune wildflower scene from yesterday afternoon (Photo: Sicco Rood).
A desert lily (hesperocallis undulata) which just started flowering here deep into the Borrego Badlands. Many still in early flowering stages (Photo: Sicco Rood).
Even the Borrego Badlands received over half an inch of rain in the last storm, with closer to an inch or more in the western part of the valley. There were rainbows, flowers, and mountain snow views this morning (Photo: Sicco Rood).
There are still abundant carpets of desert sand verbena throughout the Borrego valley as seen here looking towards the San Ysidro Mountains (Photo: Sicco Rood).
Field work day on the Abandoned Farmland Project. This project led by UCI Nature assesses the potential for abandoned farmlands to be restored to a natural state that minimizes dust & maximizes ecological values. And yes, lots of new flower growth (Photo: Sicco Rood).
Great cloud cover this morning led to just a brief sunrise. Desert purple verbena flowers and one small bouquet of dune evening primrose in the foreground, east of the valley (Photo: Sicco Rood).
At least 3 roads into Borrego are closed, with the S22 probably the most affected with mud and debris. Here you can see minor flooding from San Felipe Creek into Texas Dip earlier this evening as well as Coyote Creek, which was flowing all the way to the Borrego Sink.
Like Kay last year, Hilary dropped around 2" of rain around here, so the fragrant monsoonal chinch-weed (Pectis papposa var. papposa) is now flowering and now covers much of the Borrego Valley area, from the Borrego Sink to the hillsides in the Badlands (Photos: Sicco Rood).
Lunar rainbow or moonbow above Anza-Borrego just moments ago. Made possible by the waxing gibbous moon and some rain sprinkles above the desert tonight

With cooler weather we continue to see much snow all around Borrego Springs on the mountains above 5000 feet and at the same time see the desert flowers on dunes below (Photo: Sicco Rood).
Hummingbird nest update. One minute both hummingbirds are in the nest, and the next minute, perhaps aided by the wind, one of the fledglings left the nest and was perched on a creosote branch. Mom continued feeding both (Video: Sicco Rood).
Spectacular brittlebush (Encelia farinosa) bloom this spring. An ocean of yellow flowers today in the canyons (such as Indian Canyon shown here) of Anza-Borrego. Peaking now between 1500-3000 feet. (Photo: Sicco Rood).
As the clouds were lifting from around the Reserve this morning. Almost another inch of rain fell in the past two days on the western mountain side of the valley (Photos: Sicco Rood).
Borrego Palm Canyon Creek is still running 1.5 miles past the mouth of the canyon in the middle of the day. Fields of purple, white, and yellow flowers close to the canyon (Photos: Sicco Rood).
At this time snow/hail mix at 2200 feet above sea level at Crawford Overlook. Extensive wind damage in Borrego Springs. Power still out for large portions of the valley since yesterday evening (video: Sicco Rood).
That did not take long for the Anza-Borrego Desert to green up....Ocotillos already leafing out this Monday after the rains from Kay Friday, just two days ago! (Photo: Sicco Rood)
While no pronounced aurora borealis seen Saturday night from Anza-Borrego, the camera did pick up a fireball at 03:33 am this morning (Photo: Sicco Rood).
A flash flood at Coyote Creek in Anza-Borrego Desert this afternoon (after the storm clouds cleared), shows how 1 of it's 4 crossings go from passable to impassable in a matter of minutes this afternoon (Video: Sicco Rood).

Coyote Creek ran pretty good at some point yesterday as you can see by the mud, and is still running today all the way into the Borrego Sink. Borrego Palm Canyon creek is also running well into the Borrego (Video: Sicco Rood).
A field with desert dandelions (they open their flowers during the day) and some purple sand verbena. Looking west towards the mountains in Borrego Valley this morning just after sunrise (Photo: Sicco Rood).
At Clark 'Dry' Lake in a boat looking for fairy shrimp. The water is between 3-5 inches deep in places. Just deep enough to float in it with a raft, although one has to propel forward Venetian style (Photo: Sicco Rood)!
Dune evening primroses with water droplets from last night's small rain event. This morning in front of snow capped San Ysidro Mountain. (Photo: Sicco Rood).
