When NPs and PAs were referred as “Midlevels” during a meeting today, my Associate Chief Medical Officer corrected the speaker and said, “We don’t use the term here. They are called NPs and PAs.” That’s the kind of support and leadership we need.

6. Pelvic exam is not only for women. Some men and other gender-diverse people who were assigned female at birth needs pelvic exam too. Ask them what terms they use for their body part, and use those terms.
I’ve been sexually assaulted, verbally abused, and physically harmed multiple times at work. Nursing is one of the most dangerous jobs there is, and some of y’all still treat nurses as trash.

1. Empower patients by reassuring them that we could stop the procedure at anytime.
2. Encourage them to bring another person, listen to music, watch shows, or other activities that makes them feel at ease during the procedure.
7. Explain the importance of preventative care and the purpose of procedures like a pelvic exam. We must empower patients to be active participants in their care. ❤️
4. Verbalize what you are seeing and what you are doing to keep them aware of what is going on and what you are about to perform.
5. Have them feel the speculum (might be cool to touch) and hear the clicking sound before using it so they are aware of what to expect.
5. Anxiolytics can be helpful for some. But some patients may not like it as they may feel like they are not in full control when on these meds. Have a conversation about anxiolytics for pelvic exams before using them.
I was at the post office this morning when the person at the counter, after seeing on my scrubs that I’m an NP, asked, “Do you work for a doctor?”.
I smiled, and said, “No. I don’t work for a doctor. I work for my patients.”

I wear this pin at work. It’s a simple but impactful way of creating solidarity and community. Share with me ways you create safe spaces for LGBTQ+ people?
My parents didn’t grow up with a lot of things. So this past Christmas, I decided to buy my parents several presents. Today, one of my dad’s presents finally came in the mail! Look at his expression when he saw what was inside the package! The joy! I’m crying y’all! 😭
Stop infantilizing new grad nurses. Unless they work in the NICU or with actual babies, they are not “baby nurses”. While they don’t have a lot of nursing experience yet, acknowledge that they bring lived experience, knowledge, and skills to the profession.

The first thing the person sitting next to me on my flight back to Palm Springs was, “Do you have AIDS or monkey pox?” When I refused to engage with him, he decided to change seats. Still shaking trying to comprehend what just happened. 🥴
It’s so exhausting defending the NP profession from physicians who will never respect my important role in health care. So instead of wasting emotional energy on this, I’ve decided to just use it to work hard, continue to grow each day, & continue to advocate for my patients.
Haven’t called in sick since the pandemic started, but it has finally happened. COVID negative test this morning, but I feel like I’ve been ran over by a truck. Send pics of your furry friends. ❤️
When asked who they would recommend as an HIV primary care provider, one of the most respected infectious diseases experts in my region recommended me. 😭
Approximately 20% of all nurses in California are Filipino, yet never in my entire undergraduate or graduate schooling in California that I ever had a Filipino professor. It wasn’t until I started my PhD program in Colorado that I had my very first Filipino professor.
I was punched, sexually assaulted, and was told “I don’t want your gay germs on me”. These are just some of the abuses I’ve experienced working as a nurse, and I consider myself lucky compared to the abuses my colleagues have received. This is reality for nurses.

Greater than receiving the Stonewall Humanitarian Award is being called an ally by the trans and gender-diverse community I serve. It is important to continuously strive for allyship through actions and not just words.

You know who I need to see more of in media talking about COVID? Nurses, psychologists, social workers, etc. COVID has touched our lives in complicated ways, and experts in these disciplines should be amplified to inform the public.
Throughout my nursing education, I've read so many Advances in Nursing Science articles. And today, this queer nurse of color can proudly say that I, too, have published in ANS! Today is a professional milestone for me, y’all! 😭

Yesterday, I was told that I should “stop stirring the pot” by questioning structural racism, sexism, and transmisogyny that exist in society. So now, imma need all your help to decide which one I should use today?
Today was a good day: paid off one of my student loans, got connected to the CNO of the largest local hospital org for future collabs, got asked to guest lecture at UPenn this spring semester, and received my second vaccine dose! ❤️
An aunt just sent me a very long message full of conspiracy theories after seeing my picture on social media getting my COVID vaccine. The message involved microchips, the devil, and papayas. I kid you not. It involved papayas. 🤦🏻♂️
I aspire to be the same level of extra as my aunt who I just found is a vlogger in the Philippines, with a sizable following. Same aunt who had a debut (Filipinx equivalent of quinceñera) two years ago when she turned 60.
And yes, she wore a tiara. 😂
Last week, I emailed my CEO about the need to prepare future clinicians in caring for LGBTQ+ folx. Today, he emailed me giving me the go signal to business plan on an LGBTQ+ residency program for nurse practitioners!

Eh di dagdagan nya ng stigma yung mga may depression. That’s why so many people are hesitant to seek mental health care dahil sa mga ganyang statements. 🤦🏻♂️
Raise your hand if you weren’t active on Twitter pre-COVID then you found how amazing Twitter people are — and now you can’t stop Tweeting. 😬

Today is National Trans HIV Testing Day. Let’s be reminded that while trans people, especially trans women of color, are disproportionally affected by HIV, gender identity is NOT what places them at risk. Structural racism, transmisogyny, & SDoH does.

Yesterday, I became a PhD candidate! So grateful for my committee members for their mentorship and support! I couldn’t wait for the next part of my PhD journey!
