Got the official approval from the University today - I'm a Dr! Many thanks to my family, friends, colleagues, and mentors. I'm excited for the next chapter as starting in January, I'll be a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oxford's DPIR 🎉🥂
@GregAbbott_TX
Your economic policies and aggressive tactics towards the homeless have driven up crime in our city. More police money doesn’t mean less crime. We’ve tried that, for decades. We need social services, economic justice, and housing first policies.
We (husband and I) made it to Oxford and are settling in! I feel very welcomed at DPIR, and I'm excited for what's to come. Cheers to my first Hilary term!
Latest WP is up at SSRN 👇 TL;DR: extreme weather (drought in particular) lowers trust in elections. Local governments also face lower trust, but only where clientelism is prevalent, non-clients seem to drive this. Feedback is most welcome!
@JCHartzell
Still not OK. I have taught so many students at UT who have lost someone to COVID. This is just reckless and a slap in the face to the community.
The perks of a fellowship year and convenient timing after APSA mean I had my first vacation of 2022. I responded to 0 emails. I ran a Marathon. I feel so so much better. Back to fieldwork in Brazil this week!
Big thanks to
@iasmin_goes
for hosting me at Colorado State University last week. I lectured on Global South environmental politics to her undergraduate class - really bright students and a lovely campus!
If you're no longer going to
#APSA2023
, or want a more accessible and inclusive venue for feedback, submit your proposal for the GSIPE workshop! It's 100% graduate student organized, online, and a great way to meet others.
I had a great time presenting and getting feedback on my work at IPES 2023! The IPE community is doing amazing work, and wow I'm impressed with my colleagues. Excited to get to work on revising!
I'll be joining a new team headed by the amazing
@fgenovese__
researching the intersection of climate and political vulnerability. I'll also continue my research on Latin American environmental politics.
Absolutely horrible. UT-Austin is already struggling to recruit faculty because of the *threat* of political meddling. Hard not to imagine a scenario of serious brain drain to other states.
Breaking: In a 85-59 vote, the Texas House gives initial approval to Senate Bill 18, which would make adjustments to tenure policies for Texas public colleges and universities.

My boyfriend's 14-year-old pug "Nick" (he's a cutie!) woke me up VERY early this morning to go for a walk. Decided to work on the dissertation after, and maybe made a breakthrough? OK, Nick might get me to the finish line if this continues.
@maggieNYT
Playing the victim to shift the conversation from her departure from clear norms and expectations. Happened at the Michigan certification meeting too.
I’ve officially moved to Brasília for fieldwork! And as any poli sci person would, first thing I did was observe/attend a protest in front of the Brazilian Congress. The rally was organized to oppose legislation that would open up conservation areas to mining and development.
I don't think enough people are aware of the heat wave happening in Brazil. Almost the entire country is under excessive heat warnings. There have been re-occurring power outages too.
I got the Boren Fellowship for Brazil! Caveat: not able to go to Brazil this summer - nor willing to until conditions improve. Does day dreaming about interviewing bureaucrats in Brasília and eating pão de queijo count as research?
Less deforestation is a great sign, but Amazonian fire season is around the corner, and this year's El Niño could make things worse. Also, the government is burying the fact that the Brazilian Cerrado is seeing a big (20%+) increase in deforestation
Brazil Amazon deforestation down 33.6% in the first half of 2023 compared with same period last year. Lowest since 2019, first year Bolsonaro took office. Amazonas state saw largest reduction, Mato Grosso largest increase
Sad fieldwork notes: I feel odd, to be so far from home, watching a nightmare unfold in the US. This sunset in São Paulo was pretty, and I’m keeping busy with interviews and research, but there’s an empty feeling to it now.
Had a little break from research this weekend and ran a local half marathon in the Federal District! Achieved my pace goal, and took 45th ( of 479).
#PoliSciRuns
Yesterday I taught the first class of my applied stats in R and Python course - in Portuguese! Despite a few language mistakes, it was a blast. Excited to continue this mini-course!
Given ex-President Bolsonaro's polarizing term for environmental policy and forest protections, Brazilians are still, across the board, strong environmentalists. Also, having voted for Bolsonaro doesn't seem to reveal much about environmental beliefs (or vice versa).
Got a paper accepted at
@APSAtweets
2022! Unfortunately, a separate panel proposal I was part of didn't make it. 🤷♂️ Still, excited for the research and poutine!
I had a fantastic weekend at the University of Michigan for the ICARUS conference! Among so many great projects, I got to present my work on foreign influence and climate policies in Brazil
Be on the lookout for this amazing project with
@IshanaRatan
@johnathanjguy
! We are just wrapping up fieldwork in Brazil where we visited a variety of companies, government offices, and even a hydroelectric dam.
Short interview out about my latest project with co-authors
@johnathanjguy
and
@AnthonyCalacino
: climate change is destabilizing hydroelectricity supply - but will gov'ts invest in new sources of clean energy?
Brazil’s election is today! 🗳 Some fun facts: 1️⃣ some states prohibit the sale/vending of alcohol a day before and during the election 2️⃣ this year all polls open and close at the same time, regardless of time zone 3️⃣ voting is obligatory, with a tiny fine for non-compliance.
This is so cool and could be very useful for researchers! The index combines available subnational data with satellite data using nighttime lights/build-up areas.

Incredibly excited to help lead GSIPE! The current team built an amazing network of students doing really cool research. I’m stoked to continue to build on their successes!
Usually, hypotheses don't pan out. But, once in a while.. Before fieldwork, I bet there was a spike in bills trying to weaken environmental enforcement in Brazil when Lula came to power in 2003. I was right (red line: those that strengthen enforcement).
The wait is over: GSIPE is pleased to announce our Fall 2022 Workshop lineup! Our slate ranges from the political economy of robots, renewable energy, election fraud, and much more! Also, stay tuned for our moderator volunteer signup.
And that’s a wrap on APSA for me! Great to meet so many folks and see some wonderful panels (especially in political economy & environment). Also the
@gradstudent_ipe
happy hour was a blast!
Tried out the new keyword-assisted topic model by Eshima et al. (2023) on a Brazilian Senate public hearing database (my own endeavor, will hopefully release soon). Called keyATAM, I'm finding it's a big improvement to LDA
@jon_mellon
As I glance through your paper more, I see this as a general issue with IV analysis (and not so much rainfall). The general critique seems to be that the world is causally complex, no?
OK, a little preliminary... but this Fall's selection of
@gradstudent_ipe
workshop papers is terrific. Final decisions coming soon, so keep an eye out!
ISA 2024 goers: is there interest in a panel on global North-to-South payments for environmental services? There are a few slots left for papers and we are in need of one discussant to get to the finish line. DM or email me 🙏
It's a wrap on my mini-course in applied stats! Some capibara humor and a beer to celebrate with a few of the students last night. Their projects are really impressive!
Once in a while, Twitter's algorithm delivers precisely what will make me feel productive while actually procrastinating. OK but this is actually fascinating.

Just received some exciting news: my proposed applied stats mini-course was approved at my host university! I will be teaching basic stats for social science using both R and Python starting in August.
Don't be the reviewer who comments "there are other design issues, particularly regarding the measurement of partisanship," and then doesn't say what those issues are. That was it. End of paragraph.
@devon_cantwell
So happy for you!!! (and adding to your excitement, I just got notice I'm a semi-finalist for Brazil!). Good to be an alumni of U's poli sci. Crossing my fingers for both of us!
@SlowSledDog
@GregAbbott_TX
Hi SlowSledDog. I think Austin is trying to solve the problems that lead to these issues, rather than forcing the police to deal with things they are ill-equipped to handle. Seems quite logical, you know, treat the cause rather then focus on the symptoms.
Spent Saturday hiking near Brazil's capital, which is in the Cerrado biome. This and similar savannah ecosystems actually store a lot of carbon underground, but in Brazil, only a very small percentage (something like less than 2%) is protected.
Don't forget to join us on Monday 12:00 EST for the penultimate workshop of Spring: "Drying Up Democracy? Extreme Weather, Clientelism, and Political Attitudes in Brazil and Mexico"
Some excellent reporting by
@jakespring
showing the challenges ahead for Brazil to curb deforestation. And as I investigate in part of my dissertation, Lula’s government faces risks for pursuing a more robust environmental agenda, 🧵1/5
🥁Our Spring workshops are ready to go! Join us on Monday noon (ET) for exciting IPE research! Papers and Zoom links will be available as events draw closer.
We are very excited to announce the latest lineup for our spring workshop series! We have populism, supply chains, private governance, green voting, strategic shaming, and much more. Thanks to my co-leaders for working so hard on this
@ElisaNavarra

!
Oof, today’s Brazil news is something.. record deforestation for last month in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest, and President Bolsonaro is threatening military influence in October elections, again! I need something stronger than beer, and maybe a cigarette.
Take a break from your projects sometime. Take a break from writing. Went outside on a socially distanced hike with my parents yesterday in Colorado

Going to MPSA? Interested in environmental politics and institutions? Then come to my panel! We've got a great set of papers and would love your feedback. Also, please broadcast your events.
I wrote a post for
@Env_Pol
blog 👇 about recent policy developments on solar geoengineering in the EU and US. This technology may help address the climate crisis, but there are many complex political, social, and ecological issues to consider.
New guest post! Anthony Calacino has written a blog in response to recent steps by the US and EU towards exploring solar geoengineering.
@AnthonyCalacino
Brazil’s lower house gained a few notable environmentalists yesterday (especially ex-minister of environment Marina Silva). Also, PSOL, perhaps most “green” party in Brazil, saw its highest vote share yet. Now has 14 seats in the chamber of deputies.
Had a great time presenting on interviews and fieldwork methods at the University of Brasília this week! Thank you to
@Rebecca_Abers
for organizing and leading an excellent discussion about sampling, process transparency, and triangulation
Fascinating qualitative work on just transitions in South Africa. Interviews with coal workers revealed interest in one-off payments and mistrust of government to handle payments (preference for NGOs, other organizations)

The report confirms the song was debuted at a minstrel show - an explicitly racist form of entertainment - by students wearing blackface (see pages 5 and 6). The report also says the "intentions" of the song weren't racist, so that's why University will keep it. What???!
A committee of faculty scholars, students and alumni has completed its work documenting the nearly 120-year history of “The Eyes of Texas” as part of the university’s commitment to fully own, acknowledge and teach about its school song

Excited for my first-ever ISA! I'm also charing the panel "Sustainability in IR: Nuclear, AI, Carbon Capture, Energy Infrastructure and Transitions" - can't wait!
Good environmental news today: waterways are recovering in the Yanomami territory of Brazil. January to June (left and right, respectively) shows the rivers are less muddy and less polluted after operations to halt illegal mining.
Powerful factions of the Brazilian Congress are working to re-arrange units among the government's ministries - essentially trying to defang the Ministry of the Environment. A likely effect would be reduced capacity to enforce laws against deforestation.
Marina Silva diz que vai trabalhar para manter composição do MMA ⬇️
Ministra chamou de “desserviço” tentativa do relator de esvaziar o Ministério do Meio Ambiente e afirmou que trabalhará junto ao Senado para reverter perdas
The fact we have to make economic arguments to convince some people that climate change is bad, all while the world is literally on fire, it's unbelievable.
If we keep waiting for markets to wake up and smell the smoke, we'll probably always be waiting.

This slipped past my radar, so maybe others missed it too. The US federal government has inventoried old-growth and mature forests for the first time: estimated to be 18% and 45% of all forests on federal land. Perhaps special protections will be next
Brazil released a preliminary version of its plan to fight deforestation. Called PPCDAm , it is a revised version of an older policy. But will it work? TL;DR: in a working paper, I show that past versions brought down rates of deforestation, BUT,
I love grading exams because I read answers like this: "The Articles of Confederation were America's and arguably the world's first attempt at a functioning governing document." Hi student, let me tell you about the Sumerians of 2000+ BC.
I'm collecting data on government expenditures in Mexico. This is the actual website of the federal government from 2002, even featuring sound effects. It's a work of art.
It has been an honor serving as a co-organizer for GSIPE. We are really excited about the advancements and progress we've made! If you want to help this group continue to grow, consider applying for a leadership position! DM me with any questions.
Thank you all for your engagement! We had an amazing time with our community in the past year. Time to move on, but the show must go on! We are calling for leadership (2023-2024). If you want to make GSIPE prosper, please fill out this survey () by May 31!
