I wrote something about SHA-1 and how it can be a good excuse for cryptographers to build a crazy gaming rig in 2025 👉👈 Check it out ;)

With the latest NVIDIA RTX 5090 having just been released, we wondered: how many do you need in order to find a SHA-1 collision, or worse, perform a chosen-prefix attack on SHA-1 in 2025? The answer to that question and many more can be found in our blog:

@wheresaddie Which democracy? Always having to choose between two evils never really looked like one to me.

Supply chain attacks lurking in so many places all the time. Even some big tech aren't willing to put in the effort of properly enforcing dependency code reviews. Whac-a-dep should be a weekly game any dev team must plays.

Dependency minimalism (writing software that deliberately tries to have as few dependencies as practical) is a really underrated virtue imo. Every single dependency is a risk that "something will go wrong" during someone's installation process. Installing projects with hundreds of dependencies and walking through errors can be incredibly frustrating.

Number 6 might surprise you: did you know that you could win an on-chain lottery programmatically if it consumes more gas when you loose compared to when you win? 🤯

In our latest blog post, our very own smart contract engineer is telling you all about how to avoid on-chain gotchas when it comes to on-chain randomness usage! Check it out since randomness is too important to be left out to chance:

Instead of reading crypto papers, creating a PoC or trying to break things, this week I've been doing, in order: - CSS text animations - Javascript and debugging of versioning issues to no avail - terraform to deploy ALPN on Network Load Balancers to support gRPC Startup life.

Today,@TheNakedDiver, my cofounder @RandamuInc told me: "Terraform is about treating your servers like cattle and not like pets" and that's honestly the best way of explaining it that I've heard. You're welcome. NB: no pet server was harmed for this tweet, don't worry.

A 4090 has a SHA1 hashrate of 50638.7 MH/s as per hashcat benchmarks, compared to the 22757.6 MH/s of a 3090, it basically means a SHA1 collision is nowadays only taking 26.3 GPU months (as per the "SHA1 is a Shambles" estimates, let me know if I missed a paper since then) 🤯
