Folks, let's talk about periods. Especially after HB 1159, brought by @RepErinHealy was killed today by the House Appropriations Committee. The point of the bill was to exempt period products from taxation. @sdduba, the only woman on the committee, was the lone no vote. 🧵.

As we in South Dakota continue to talk about the proposed tax cut on groceries, @ReynoldNesiba has drafted two pieces of legislation that would cut the sales tax on food to either 2.5% or 3.5%. Nesiba would have to be re-elected in November in order to introduce these bills.

Lots of emotions today as 9 Rosebud Sioux were brought back to their homeland. A lot of what I saw today and the folks I spoke to couldn’t make it in the story. Many are hoping this is the start of many more children coming home. via @argusleader.

It's my last day as an intern @Gothamist and it's so bittersweet. I never thought a pandemic would upend life as we knew it. To have been able to report at this time has been a privilege and a masterclass in journalism. A quick thread of work I've produced.

I’ve been @argusleader for two years now. I’m incredibly proud of the work Ive done from projects on MMIW and cemeteries to covering the 2022 election and the statehouse. I’ve made some great friends and found some gems in South Dakota. Can’t wait to see what happens next!

South Dakota has a history of ranking last, or near the bottom, for teacher pay. And that's despite the estimated fiscal year 2022 state aid totaled just under $500 million to all 149 school districts, a number that has increased regularly in the last five years. @bymorganmatzen.
Opinion: When South Dakota has a history of ranking near the bottom for teacher pay, the event for a worthy cause was a bad look – to say the least.

Here at the Yankton Reservation for the return of nine Rosebud Sioux children from the former Carlisle boarding school. Plan is for a small prayer ceremony before moving on to Whetstone Landing for a welcome home ceremony. @argusleader @EEBormett

I just want to give a little more context to this video, especially considering I dropped my phone and I think that gives a sense of what myself and @EEWoodiel were going through in the moment. (1/14).

The Argus Leader staff will be furloughed at the end of December. This is what that means for me.
"This year, I have to weigh if a movie ticket will break my budget, and have had to give up going home for Thanksgiving because of finances." she said. ". None of us want to leave journalism but, it makes a young woman question a 10-year-old dream.".

I’m so grateful to have had the chance to be in this reporting class. The five men we covered have a combined sentence of over 200 years. It’s really important work to show what happens when it comes to #clemency and #parole in #Newyork.
It’s a wrap for @tommy_robb & my @newmarkjschool clemency/parole reporting class! I am so proud of these students for all their hard work telling the stories of men seeking #clemency or #parole. Shout out to Steve Zeidman & his @cunylaw students for working with us.
