I’m a housing reporter in LA who is currently looking for housing, and the roadblocks I’m running into are wild. We already know affordability is an issue but the criteria to just be considered is insane, too.
@ardemp
It took my newsroom 30 seconds to decide how to phrase the attack — with our managers landing on “Russia invades Ukraine.” They didn’t hesitate for a moment to call out the aggressor. But when Artsakh and Gaza were under attack, all my scripts were changed to say “conflict.”
LATEST: I spent several days visiting this RV park and getting to know its residents, who have all been fighting to keep their community in tact. The same community that helped a lot of them escape homelessness and drug addiction.
Bidding closed for this 17th-century Armenian gospel book on Sotheby’s online auction today. It was sold for $93,013 USD. I hope the buyer does the right thing, and sends it to Yerevan’s Matenadaran museum and research institute 🙏🏼. Here’s the story we aired about it on Sunday.
City Council President Krekorian did not mince words when speaking about the Lachin corridor blockade in Artsakh ahead of a vote on Item 12 today — saying “we are about to witness the next Armenian genocide occur before our very eyes.”
I’m at the Inside Safe operation on Venice Blvd underneath the 405 fwy today, where I’m told more than 50 unhoused folks will be offered some sort of temporary shelter. Tricky situation here since there are 3 different jurisdictions involved.

Looking for someone who can talk about Armenian holiday traditions (primarily about the food we cook for New Year’s Eve) and why we celebrate on the 6th rather than the 25th.
DM me if that’s you or you have someone in mind!
My thanks again to

Not a good day for folks in Burbank! This was the scene on N Pass Ave where several massive pine trees came down during the storm last night! Wild.

Our LA City Council members are clearly still struggling with transparency and it is not okay. I recently asked
@ImeldaPad
’s office for an interview or statement on their plan for a homeless encampment on Aetna St. in Van Nuys. I’ve covered this encampment since before
People in LA can’t afford to live where they work — now that includes reporters who are supposed to be covering this stuff in an effort to change it, but can’t, because corporations are gutting our newsrooms.
This is where I point out that the MediaNewsGroup/Alden's Southern California News Group's Long Beach Press Telegram is hiring a City Hall reporter for $40K, or $19.23 an hour, to live in one of the most expensive metro in the country:
NEW: I spoke to a rider who said he doesn’t want Metro to keep spending hundreds of millions of dollars on LAPD and LASD in hopes of improving safety. Watch full story below:
Officials are coming together at Union Station today to kick off LA’s first-ever “Infrastructure Week.”
Panelists will talk about the work needed to carry out major events like the 2028 Olympics, which includes improving transportation.

This opportunity means so much to me. It was never part of the plan to be on the other side of the camera, but I’m thrilled to take on this new challenge.
This is all preliminary but it sounds like 16 people were shot, 10 are unresponsive and 2 are in critical condition, but breathing. Happened in Monterey Park at a Lunar New Year festival. Just so awful.

There is a huge effort this morning, and in the days to come, to identify members of the masked mob that launched attacks on the Gaza solidarity camp last night.
Police have hours of footage they can scrub through. Reports indicate some of the agitators are white supremacists.

I’m sick of seeing LA’s best storytellers struggle to do the job that we all need them to do!!! Community reporting matters!!! More than any other kind. Incredible newsrooms like LA Taco shouldn’t have to ask for cash. DONATE!!

Chancellor Gene Block released a statement today that said the university attempted to uplift student voices through the encampment, but it ultimately had to be removed because of disruptions to campus operations and the violence that counter-protesters inflicted upon it.

Last night, one of the issues Mayor Karen Bass raised in her first State of the City speech was the conditions on LA's Metro system.
I spent a few weeks taking a look at those conditions as well... and talking to passengers:
NEW: Mayor's team just finished an Inside Safe operation near Fountain & Alexandria in Hwood. 20 ppl were brought inside. The encampment was steps away from a daycare. Residents have been asking the city to address it for nearly 9 months.
Video is mine. Photos via

Then I was ghosted for a while again and was told on September 12 that they have received my email but that they’re still working on the statement. Well imagine my surprise when Mayor Bass announced the next day that they concluded an Inside Safe effort on Aetna St
before, what the city plans to do to ensure the best outcome. Guys… believe me when I tell you I was MORE than generous with the timeline I gave to the city. I first asked Padilla’s rep for comment on September 4… didn’t hear back at all until the 7th…
Mayor Karen Bass issued a statement on the latest draft for the permanent Al Fresco dining program in LA.
“I directed City Departments to work together to make this a permanent Al Fresco program that incorporates everything that made the temporary…
In the weeks after that incident I started working on a story about what the city plans to do next. My story was focused on WHY the protestors were against the sweep, how other community members in the area felt about the encampment (residents, business owners) and as I mentioned

I got the scoop on how Metro's 'Tap-to-Exit' pilot program is going so far.

I was at the Santa Monica courthouse this afternoon where Judge Ford heard closing arguments in the Barrington Plaza Tenants Association v. Douglas Emmett case. He did not issue a ruling today, but says a tentative decision is expected in the next two weeks.

I need to interview someone this weekend about Metro's fare-capping program and why riders are asking for free rides instead. (I know there was a rally about that today but I couldn't make it).

I met an Armenian woman today who told me she’s been homeless for more than 20 years. I was at an interim housing facility where she finally secured temporary shelter. She heard Mayor Bass was coming to tour the facility, so she did her makeup. I can’t stop thinking about her.
There were two more stabbing attacks on Metro's system this week. Neither one was deadly. Both involved passengers, not drivers. Then a man was robbed (cell phone) and attacked on a Metro bus today to mark the 3rd violent incident in a span of 24 hours.
Most people I've spoken

cases.
NEW: The
@lacontroller
's office just completed their first full audit, and it's on interim housing and shelter bed data.
The results show that the number of unhoused people in LA (46,260), is nearly three times larger than the number of shelter beds available (16,100).
A reminder that *both* the Palmdale and Lancaster stations of the LASD were involved in that 2015 settlement with the DOJ that subjects them to a consent decree regarding use of force.
LA County Sheriff Robert Luna has just released body worn camera footage of a deputy punching a young mother in Palmdale during an arrest.
It is appalling and there is no justification for this violence.
