In 1974, a Yale professor predicted this moment. He warned that well-intentioned speech policing would backfire. 50 years later, his prediction came true in ways no one expected. Here's what he saw coming (and why it matters now more than ever):

I spend a lot of time on X. Probably a lot more than you. I’ve watched things unfold to this point in time where we have one of the biggest musical artists of our time using an ad to sell swastika t-shirts during the Super Bowl. So please take a seat while I explain to you how we got here. For the past few years, there has been a major shift of interest to the world of politics. It has transformed into a form of entertainment, a source of identity, and, for many, an all-consuming obsession. Politicians are no longer just public servants; they have become larger-than-life celebrities, commanding fan bases that rival those of movie stars and musicians. Just look at the numbers. Look at their follower counts. People don’t just support candidates anymore; they pledge allegiance to them, treating political affiliation as a core part of their identity. Even worse, people don’t see themselves as human beings. They see themselves as “conservative” or “liberal.” Don’t believe me? Check any dating app, and that’s one of the main identity marker questions.

We're facing a self-censoring epidemic. Data shows the most educated Americans are self-censoring at record rates—and it's rewiring our brains, breaking our teams, and creating a vacuum that extremism loves to fill. But silence isn't safety — it's slow poison.

Society's most dangerous epidemic isn't viral. It's not spread by contact. It's spread by fear. And the most educated Americans are the most afraid. Here's how silence has become our greatest enemy:
