Instead, as reported by @patrickkmaguire , it is a tight coterie of Starmer staffers on the hard-right of the Party leading this purge. Their desire to reshape the PLP with Starmerite automatons trumps all else, from trade unions to local parties.

Let's start with the big one. Darren Rodwell made multiple national headlines with his dodgy comments on race at a Black History Month. Despite this, the Labour Right ignored all complaints & let him through to the shortlist. Rodwell remains the PPC.

You might wonder - will the trade unions tolerate this blatant abuse of process, blocking their candidates? The answer is no - earlier this year, trade unions agreed with the NEC a clarification of 'due diligence' that it could only be used for e.g. serious financial wrongdoing.

& crucially, there will be no nationalised energy system, despite the catastrophic failure of the private sector. There has never been a better time for public ownership. Yet Starmer & co have rejected this popular solution, despite its democratic support in the labour movement.

Public sector delivery = more control, easier and public money going solely to the public good, not private profits. Instead, Reeves' proposals will see huge quantities going to the private sector. That £28bn will go a lot less far than under McDonnell's proposals.

But Starmer's allies on the Labour NEC protected him, saying he'd apologised and that was the end of it (full story below). Diane apologised immediately - and was then suspended for 13 months. One rule for them.

How can they do this? Well according to Labour's own rules - they can't. But.... There are three stages to selections: longlisting, shortlisting & the selection. Longlisting: NEC Majority, w trade union input Shortlisting: Local Party & TU reps Selection: Labour members

Sarah Sackman's selection in Finchley yesterday means Labour's now picked 40 cands for winnable seats (not including by-elections). Of these 40: 19 women; 5 ethnic minority; 31 cllrs or ex-cllrs; 13 council or group leaders or deps, or fmr; 1 firmly left; 1 working class job.

Daily reminder that Neil Coyle - a right-wing white man - had the whip restored despite having allegations of racial and sexual harrassment upheld. Meanwhile, the first Black woman MP faces a kangaroo court. The idea that this Labour Leadership cares about racism is laughable.

It's out of step with the country, because people want their MPs to be local, but from Wakefield to Stroud, the Leadership are happy to exclude popular local champions in favour of loyalist parachutes. Back to the bad old days.

And if polls are to believed, voters will change their minds again in 2024. Now that party ties are looser, how do people choose their politicians? Surprisingly, it turns out being from the same area is almost as important as having the same political viewpoint!

We should never mistake an attempt to stabilise British capitalism (spoiler alert: it won't) with a progressive electoral politics which actually shifts power & wealth to the many. Don't mistake the crumbs for the loaf.

In Camberwell & Peckham, respected anti-racist activist @mowords was blocked for 'due diligence' such as... once liking a Caroline Lucas tweet. There are next to no black male MPs who grew up like Maurice, directly experiencing racist policing. But he's a socialist, so 🤔

... it turns out that apology was a load of crock, as the BBC's Joe Pike revealed last week, with Rodwell deriding a 'smear campaign' Surely that changes things? No, says Labour: they'd dealt with the matter at the time (on the basis of a phoney apology)

Firstly, Labour's 2019 pledge for 10 years of green investment at £25bn/year would now, with inflation, be more like £29.5bn. So, lower. But it's also different from the 2019 programme in another crucial way: this is capital investment, going to the private sector.

Incredibly, when Labour took out Faiza Shaheen, gifting Ian Duncan Smith his seat back, the reasons cited included: Faiza *talking about her own experiences of Islamophobia in Labour*. Institutional racism, ignored by the press.

Shocking that neither the Guardian nor the BBC mention Faiza's assertion that her talking about Islamophobia within Labour, as a Muslim woman, was cited in the case against her. By any metric major news. But despite a comment from *the Labour Muslim Network*, goes unmentioned.

From the beginning of Labour's Parliamentary selections in summer 2022, Starmer's henchmen went about purging left-wingers en masse, under the guise of 'due diligence'. In doing so, they overrode the rights of trade unions & local parties / members.

Just weeks earlier, another prominent Labour leader in local government and woman of colour, Doina Cornell, was blocked despite major union backing. The blocking of this popular local figure went on to cost the Party control of Stroud council.
