In February 2020, I sat in this PAX East hallway awaiting a call from Twitch. I was so nervous I threw up in a trash can, but I did it - I got my dream role on the Safety Operations team.

I was moderating a large Discord server and broke up an argument. One of the users apologized and said they really appreciated how I handled the conflict. They admitted they were Twitch staff, and they asked if I wanted a job recommendation. And here I am! 💜

Consider - a minority streamer is being harassed, they have every imaginable negative word on their block list…But raiders found a hack! Tons of channels with Loser emotes. This becomes impossible to moderate.
This is one of several (very real!) scenarios this policy prevents.

I know it seems improbable, but I promise these decisions aren’t made on a whim. There are millions of users & communities on Twitch that you’ll never see, and the possibilities for misuse are more than most realize. Try to trust that these decisions are made with safety in mind

I want to be real for a second.
The way people demonize the Trust and Safety team is brutal. People in that line of work don’t do it for some kind of power trip. Most of the time they’re busy preventing you from seeing terrible things you had no idea people try to do on Twitch.
There’s been a lot of chatter about how Twitch staff interacts with streamers, but you should see how streamers interact with staff sometimes. It’s brutal out there.

Today is my last day on payroll at Twitch. Since being laid off, I've applied to 42 jobs, gotten responses from 6, and interviewed at 2. I want nothing more than to find an opportunity to pursue my career passions, and I hope I find something before my situation becomes more dire
