i can already tell this is going to be exhausting. no, tech platforms banning accounts does not violate the 1st Amendment. In fact, it's protected by the 1st Amendment. yes, Big Tech monopoly power and content moderation decisions have profound implications for free expression

Banning data harvesting, micro targeting, and non transparent algorithmic amplification that’s maximized for engagement would do way more to combat the online spread of white supremacy and disinformation than deplatforming Trump

@TrevorFSmith No, they can't be given that much credit. It's when public perception has shifted far enough that it's less profitable to platform the fascists - the market risks now outweigh the benefits

NEW: I wrote for @FastCompany about how we shouldn't let politicians respond to white supremacist violence by expanding policing, surveillance, and government censorship––policies that uphold white supremacy

The echo chamber is the thing. Again, we've all been talking about it for a while but we're realizing the insane, brutal, tribal power of it now. And *it will get worse* if we don't redouble our efforts to stop it.

This is exactly the wrong takeaway. This isn't about mental illness. It's about a massive online echo chamber with the power to convince all kinds of people from all walks of life to reject basic tenets of reality.

Commercial/surveillance social media platforms deserve much harsher criticism and need our ongoing concerted efforts to demand more fundamental change PS: remember Mastodon? Check it out for an open/non-surveillance alternative

Twitter, Facebook, et al are just as much rats fleeing the ship as Chao and DeVos. There's no principled stand or substantive fix here, just a cynical response to market sentiment
