@fredfertang I saw Sadiq play for Pakistan v Derbyshire at Chesterfield that year - the first cricket match I ever went to. With my Grandad - I was 9. After that, I was hooked on cricket, and Derbyshire, for life - and have always had a soft spot for Pakistan ever since!

@The_Forty_Four The commentary was shocking throughout but this was undoubtedly the low point.

I didn’t ever expect to be retweeting Bill Kristol, but this is so sharply relevant that I thought it appropriate to do so! Zhdanov was a shocker. Is DJT a Staljn equivalent?

Oh God, American Zhdanovism. Wiki: Zhdanovism was a Soviet cultural doctrine developed in 1946. Under this policy artists who failed to comply with the government's wishes risked persecution...Part of Zhdanovism was a campaign against 'cosmopolitanism'.

This was the first serious bookshop I ever used and it was wonderful. As an A-level student from Dronfield in the late 1970s I found it totally fascinating and engrossing. It played a big part in pushing me towards the career as an academic historian that has followed!
