The colorful jockey silks that represent the owner(s) of each horse are one of the most iconic parts of Thoroughbred racing. The silks room, where hundreds or even thousands of sets of silks are stored at any given time, is a busy place. Silks are categorized and organized by a silks room attendant, who selects the sets needed for each rider in every race. But it’s the valet’s job to ensure they collect the correct colors for their rider and that the jockey is properly outfitted for the race. Every jockey has a valet, who serves as a personal assistant, prepping their equipment and making sure everything is ready for the next race. Riders quickly change silks between races, while their white pants stay the same all day. Ever wonder how jockeys manage to stay so organized in such a fast-paced environment? Thank the valets! 👏 Fun Fact: It’s pronounced “Val-it,” not “Val-lay.”

Racing takes place year-round worldwide, providing continuous opportunities for horsemen and fans. In the United States, Kentucky’s racing circuit features five tracks that operate throughout the state. This structure enables horsemen to compete throughout the entire year while simultaneously shipping horses to and from their home bases as needed. In horse racing, a home base is where a horse is stabled and trained when not racing. This can be a farm, training center, or racetrack with year-round facilities. Trainers use home bases for daily care and conditioning, shipping horses to races as needed while maintaining a familiar environment.

What is the Amplify Horse Racing Mentorship Program? 🤔 This program was designed to provide a first step for young people to learn more about the Thoroughbred horse industry and learn how to get more involved. Mentee-mentor pairings are designed to encourage mentees to learn about the Thoroughbred horse industry and develop an understanding of its nuances, teach important skills needed to pursue a job or career, and facilitate meaningful conversations between experienced professionals and young people about the realities of employment in the Thoroughbred horse industry.
