If it’s true that Justin Trudeau has to take life-saving precautions today we should all be ashamed. The vitriol our public servants face daily is despicable and un Canadian. Let’s refuse to let ugliness win. Thanks to everyone willing to serve in public life.
@AmandaLang
hey amanda, we all know YOU think your the smartest in the room but next time you interview somebody on the level of a David Dodge, Get your shit together! your overrated!
Why do so many people call male politicians by their surname and female politicians by their first name? Don’t worry about mispronouncing Kamala...it’s Harris by all conventions but sexist ones. Unless you say Joe and Donald give respect where it’s due.
It’s a sad day for Canada when the public broadcaster cancels its daily business show. For about 30 years it played a key role for Canadians. Hard to see how budget cuts warrant burning the furniture to make heat. Best wishes to the amazing staff.
Who else does this at the dentist?
Dentist: how many times a week do you floss?
Me: makes up plausible sounding number to avoid flossing lecture
Dentist: you’re doing a great job keeping tartar down
Me: mentally confirming there’s no need to floss and feeling like I won.
This article comes with a warning: it may make you feel slightly sick. Be grateful for the system we have, Canadians. Whatever flaws we may have, our tax code and social systems are grounded in care for each other.
PSA for those who need it: please stop confusing climate and weather (you know who you are: “how can you talk about climate change when it’s -30 out”). It was once amusing but it’s become tedious. If you’re that ill-informed refrain from comment at all. You’re welcome.
Trying to understand the policy mindset which closes down restaurants that bent over backwards to be safe and Covid compliant but think preschoolers should knock on strangers’ doors and take candy. Is a six year old in charge?

A wave of garbage was filmed rippling off the coast of the Dominican Republic. An environmental group is working with the government to clean up the area, and says it has collected at least 30 tons of plastic
This is why it’s so important to consume multiple credible sources of news. I have observed this in the past, same raw data, diametrically opposed conclusions. One newspaper and one news channel won’t cut it. Triangulate and then use your own common sense.
Lol. Working with similar data, I present to you two very different headlines from two different Canadian news outlets from this morning on the one year to the election mark.
We’ve seen this movie before: someone with enormous positional power lies about reality. “The sky is purple.” And when many people object, that person’s acolytes clamour “oh you media/elite/leftists can’t stand not to be in control.” But the sky is not purple. Truth always wins.
I’m seeing lots of marketing by retailers about “Singles Day”. Can we please collectively push back on turning November 11 into anything but a day of sober remembrance and recollection? It would be gross on any day (IMHO) but on this day it’s reprehensible.
One of the very best ways to honour those who sacrificed in WWII is to fight the creeping forces of racism and nationalism. They fought for our right to express ourselves however we feel fit. Wear a poppy and you honour them. Force one on your neighbour and you mock them.
So when my public broadcaster has hosts who say both nucular and Artic, should I give up? People will just say words that approximate the real one and we should just nod along? Or should we demand better?
So Ontario deems liquor an essential service. Stated reason, mental health concerns for the surprisingly high number who are addicted. Unstated: governments addicted to tax revenue made from those addicts.

I’m just going to say I think people who politicize the Covid 19 outbreak or otherwise manipulate it or its coverage by the media for their own gain will be firmly on the wrong side of history. There are times when decency counts.
The family of former Liberal cabinet minister, Donald Macdonald, says he has died at age 86. Macdonald was first elected to parliament in 1962. He became a cabinet minister in the Pierre Trudeau government. His daughter, Sonja, says he will be remembered as a great Canadian.
Overheard at a business breakfast: guy in front of me is asked for proof of vax and photo ID and says to woman working door: “now you have to show me your ID”. Memo to him and all like him: people deserve to do their jobs with dignity and respect. It’s not cute. It’s demeaning.
Does anyone else feel like the NFT phenomenon is a meta-joke about the disconnect between prices and real value? The value of the NFT being the blockchain signature (some computer code) and not the thing itself. And that it’s the last stage of a speculative market?
Should the federal government hold a snap referendum on the Kinder Morgan pipeline? Maybe this is one case where what the majority of us think should lead the way. And don’t remind me of Brexit, I know democracy can be horrible. But sometimes necessary.
@OnTheMoneyCBC
15 years ago my husband died and at the age of 35 I had never paid a bill, etc. I had to find a job, a nanny, stock broker, build a bsmt suite, refinance my mortgage and
@AmandaLang
was my life coach. My daughter is now on the dean's list at UBC :)
BOC chief Stephen Poloz says “a firefighter has never been criticized for using too much water” - but to extend the metaphor: if you’ve seen a house after the firefighters leave, it’s a wreck. Often unliveable. A tear down. That’s the Canadian economy we’re taking about.
Ok I’m going to bite here after inadvertently hitting the “bonkers” button on Twitter.
@elonmusk
suggested Covid boosters cause harm. I asked for clarification- there have been suggestions of social harm (inequity) and of prolonging the pandemic through vaccine diversion.1/2
Streaming service: we recommend this to you as a 97% match. Me: that’s rude streaming service, clearly you think I’m a moron. Me: binge watches entire season in three days and wonders when second season is out.
I’m engaging only because many of us are worried about the long term consequences of living with Covid. Including cardiovascular risks from getting Covid. NO such risks exist from the first shots, as science has determined to the best of its ability so far.
I have been wanting to tweet about this and hesitated about putting myself in the mob’s path. But let’s remember free speech includes divergent and even disgusting views. And that small mistakes happen and an apology should sometimes be enough. Let the punishment fit the crime.
I'm hearing from many people who are developing anxiety if not paranoia because they can no longer make sense of the world. The idea pathogens are now so rampant that people are afraid to open their mouths, like a tweet, share a post, smile at a joke, express an opinion.
Oh yeah, while stuck in an elevator together but before having to crawl out between floors,
@catherinezahn
schooled me on why legal cannabis is right and good. Nicest smackdown ever.

Federal government names organizations that will help spend $660M journalism fund - and half are from Quebec. That’s weird math. But verrry Canadian. At least election year Canadian.
@jaketapper
@Raffi_RC
Does anyone else feel like the real “People of the year(s)” is the mob which now determines winners and losers? This venerable magazine was once able to narrow this down to one person who is the biggest news maker. I think we all know who it would be. We just don’t like it.
But as we all know the peer reviewed science on vaccine safety is rock solid. So to all of those who feel tempted to reply: if you didn’t believe in the first shot, we just aren’t going to agree. Please sit down. If there’s some reasonable view about the fourth shot I’m all ears.
This is pretty shameful but sadly not an isolated event. People who would never dream of mixing up an inch or a mile do so with million and billion. Numeracy has never mattered more!
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but if you’re passing cars on a road where there are two double lines, you potentially risk the lives of the inhabitants of three cars. Something you have no business doing. Stay safe.
Right on every count Oliver but I’d add one more, despite fear of piling on to a sad soul who will probably slink off in shame for that post : that is an entirely appropriate outfit for a working woman travelling in winter.
1. Horrendously disrespectful way 2 talk about one of the most respected foreign ministers in the G7;
2.
@cafreeland
is a dedicated, hard working, & incredibly talented Minister of the crown;
3. Suggest you delete Twitter & do more reading. Start with “The Paper Bag Princess.”
Advice from medical officials on Covid is not at all unclear. This from Toronto’s chief MO - “assume COVID-19 is everywhere and that without proper protections, you are at risk of infection”. Why aren’t policy makers listening? Because have multiple interests. But we can listen.
2 Ontario men who pleaded guilty to selling sexual services of 2 girls aged 14, 17 argue 4-year mandatory sentences for human trafficking constitute cruel and unusual punishment.
Forty years ago today,
@RtHonJoeClark
became the youngest and only Alberta-born Prime Minister in Canadian history. His ongoing legacy of decency, honesty, pragmatism, courage & public service make me proud every single day.
Well into my teens I thought there were two distinct words, Miss-led (being led astray) and misled, pronounced Mizeled, meaning being conned. Then I realized misled only meant the first thing.
I love it when CEOs say they don’t pay attention to their competitors...it’s up there with the line that they don’t care what the share price is doing. It’s not only untrue but a fireable offence IF true.

Just ran into Billy Joel in Sag Harbor. He said if this gets retweeted a billion times he will record a new updated version of "We Didn't Start the Fire"
Is it just me or are we in the process of normalizing fascist behaviour? Get it straight folks: America may have many flaws but doing democracy isn’t one of them.
