In 2001 Ireland had 22,658 hospital beds, in 2021 we have 14,213. In that 20 years, our population grew by 1m people, or 25%.
In 2009 a HSE report recommended we increase ICU beds from 289 to 517, in 2021 we have 280, a net loss of 9, despite a population increase of 500,000.
