The news is OUT! I'm so excited to have this opportunity to join @nytimes as a local investigations fellow. I'll be working on a year-long project on the opioid overdose crisis in Baltimore and across MD in partnership with @BaltimoreBanner with data+reporting by @FurrierTranform.
We are thrilled to announce the inaugural class of the Local Investigations Fellowship. The journalists, who hail from five states, will produce signature investigative work focused on their state or region.

YA GIRL'S BACK AT IT! Today's my first day reporting for the @BaltimoreBanner. After I took the buyout I wasn't sure if I would return to news. Then I started talking to folks at the Banner. I was impressed with their passion, drive and vision for what local journalism could be.

If any Mississippi restaurants do this, please PLEASE let me know ASAP because this is incredible. Love to see our descent into dystopian absurdity.
To comply with social distancing guidelines, luxury restaurant in northern Virginia will have 1940s-era mannequins occupying 50 percent of the tables.

I am so honored to be awarded the Bill Minor Prize by @MPAnewspapers. I want to talk about how this story was possible, in the face of a frustratingly untransparent corrections system which never allowed me to set foot in Parchman or any other prison.

Our next home: Baltimore! I'm starting my MSPH at @JohnsHopkinsSPH with a focus on health policy. No better time to study public health than during a pandemic, right?? .After a long hiatus, I'm ready to get back into the messy middle of things. See you in Charm City.

If you missed my Parchman story that ran earlier this week in the @clarionledger, here it is in USA Today — this time it’s not behind the subscriber paywall. Documents paint a detailed picture of what it’s like to eat, sleep, live and sometimes die in the Mississippi prison.
"Men incarcerated at Parchman resort to threats of self harm, flooding cells and setting fires to seek help for severely injured and sick residents — including a diabetic patient who didn't receive insulin for three days" via @AlissaZhu.

There are names for the thing causing the pandemic that are not racist or xenophobic. The coronavirus. COVID-19. SARS-CoV-2, if that’s your jam. Let’s go with those instead.
@ashtonpittman Asked about his use of the term "china virus" Reeves first said no Chinese residents or visitors should be bullied, then said that individuals who refuse to wear masks should also not be bullied. Then he said this:.

HI remember this bizarre story I wrote in April? Things didn't add up & it got my reporter senses tingling. I told my friend @newsmanual, because who better to investigate tech mysteries than @replyall? Well, Emmanuel DELIVERED & the episode dropped today:
The REALLY weird part — orgs all across the country have made the same mistake over the years. They post toll-free numbers intended purchasers of cat food, victims of hurricanes, fans of Capt. Marvel, etc. — all leading to the same provocative message

1/5 Y’all, it’s time for some ~personal news~. This is my last week at the @springfieldNL. I’ll be joining the @clarionledger in Jackson, Mississippi as a breaking news & public safety reporter in January.

When I started at the @clarionledger 2 years ago, Jimmie got the job of showing the newbie around the statehouse. It seemed to me there wasn’t a single lawmaker who didn’t stop to say hello to to the legendary Jimmie Gates. I’m so thankful to have had the chance to work with him.
After 39 years, I have decided to retire from the Clarion Ledger. I took a voluntary buyout offer. Tomorrow is my last day. Thank you for being my readers over the years!.

Wake up, babe, new @ayewolfe investigation just dropped (!!!!).
Part 1 of our investigation:. Former Gov. Phil Bryant used his office, political influence and connections to help NFL legend Brett Favre boost a fledgling drug company. Then he tried to cash in on the project when he left office, text messages show:

we made it @FurrierTranform @JessMGallagher.
@nytimes This sentence is ungrammatical for lack of “and” before “turnover” because “as well as” is not a conjunction. “50 times more potent” means “51 times as potent”; see the Times style guide. @AlissaZhu @FurrierTranform

I’ve gone by my middle name, Alissa, since kindergarten because kids couldn’t pronounce Dounan and called me “doughnut.” I’ve grown to love my Chinese name. My parents put a lot of thought into choosing it for me and it reflects their own stories as immigrants in a new country.
Help on a story? If you've ever chosen to use one of your names over another, American or ethnic, let me know and why? I've only ever used my American name, sadly ashamed of my Chinese one.

The @BaltimoreBanner got autopsy data after suing the medical examiner’s office, which had been withholding public info about who was dying, where and how. We learned OD deaths have happened on 1/3 of city blocks & 13 children under 4 have died since 2020 from drug exposure.

Despite being smaller than ever, the @springfieldNL is kicking butt and taking names. I'm proud of my old newsroom.
The News-Leader took two "sweepstakes" awards in competition with every Missouri newspaper, including those in Kansas City and St. Louis.
