Econ is lacking in supplementing empirics with real-world insight. When was the last time you wrote a paper on Uber and talked to an actual driver? Or on lending practices where you talk to the people applying for loans? I want those interviews with the long lit reviews sections.
A group of three PhD students told me today that they were excited to meet a "strong woman in Economics" and I literally have not gotten that moment/statement out of my head. Excuse me while I ride this dopamine through the end of the semester.
Reminder for those of us at the end of our ropes. If you ssc install dadjoke into Stata- you can just type "dadjoke" into your code when it's making you mad and it will give you a corny joke.
I'm excited to announce that I will be joining

@KneeCSOR_WVU
. I will also be the Assistant Director of the Healthcare MBA and Economics MS Programs.

JMCs, in case no one has reassured you lately. It's okay to not want an R1 research job. It's okay to love teaching. It's okay to leave academia. Focus on your happiness. Most advisors have never worked outside of their current setup, so they are biased towards it.

I use this paper to show my students how hard it is to publish null results, even if SUPER important. 4 years with rejections of "fascinating, but we don't publish nulls." I'm happy this passion project (and my fave paper) with
@econshishir
has found a great home at Health Econ!!
I'm hiring a personal postdoc starting in fall. Does it pay a ton? No. But you only teach if you want, you can do research with any of my centers, have amazing data access to super expensive and rare data, and I'll make sure you can get to any conferences. 1/3
I have a bunch of students applying/heading off to grad school. So, I threw out today's lecture and gave them an hour-and-a-half of "Here are many data sets you all should be aware of in grad school for each of your fields." I have never seen pens fly across paper so quickly.

Many grad students told me they're waiting till Thanksgiving or after to get in the Dec 1st deadlines. Don't. Get in your apps now. I must have talked to people from two dozen schools at SEA whose departments entirely jumped the market and are already doing interviews/flyouts.
Pro tip: The most effective way to get students to show up to virtual office hours is to make yourself a snack and try to eat it while the room is empty.

Mentioned I turned 31 this month to an undergrad student I'm co-authoring with on a paper. They were shocked because they thought I was in my 40s. Please excuse me as I go crawl into a hole and die.
I'm seeing lots of tweets struggling with finding reviewers. As someone who submits a ton of papers, I want to balance out that cost by also providing a ton of reviews. I have some bandwidth now. Feel free to send me anything related to regulation and health.

I just had a student come running into my office excited because they got the Fed internship they had been working hard to get and today is just such a good day. This is why we do what we do.
I won the Moonshot Award for excellence in university center leadership. This prize money is going to finance my research team and pay for travel to work with legislators on understanding the potential impact of prescriptive authority of pharmacists.
I am finding that every semester my syllabus just keeps getting longer and longer as I close ingenious loopholes students have found. Will I ever manage a two-page syllabus? How long will it be when I retire?
Fool me once, shame on me.
Fool me twice, it's going in the syllabus.
My darn students made me this gift basket to say they'll miss me but good luck at WVU and it's filled with thank you cards for the classes I've taught. I'm not crying, you're crying.

Y'all, the College of Charleston has it figured out. This was the first seminar I've ever given where I was provided Corona to drink while lecturing. They are on the next level and we need to learn their ways. (Not to mention all the top tier urban/regional/public people!)
Lots of people are talking about U.S. quarantine law, but I haven’t seen anyone mention one of the craziest quarantine cases in history- the forced exile of leprosy patients in Hawai'i until the 1960s. So… strap in and let me teach you a fascinating history lesson. 1/17
It feels awesome to see this paper, Occupational Licensing's Effects on Firm Location and Employment in the United States, in print in the British Journal of Industrial Relations after years of work. Thank you to everyone who gave comments and suggestions!
Hey
#econtwitter
, I recently took over as the faculty advisor for the undergraduate economics club at my institution. It has had low participation for a while and I am hoping to inspire some new life into it. Any advice?
Woke up to a rejection, an r&r, article proofs, and a request to review. I'll get BINGO if an acceptance shows up. (trying to put that energy into the world for some revisions that have been back under review for eight months...)
Non-licensing scholars actually showed up to the 8 a.m. Occupational Licensing session! Amazing. This topic has really grown. For half a decade it was a couple of us talking to each other in a room. Now it's scores of scholars, standalone conferences, and new research every week.
@jmhorp
Make teaching licenses universally recognized so when good teachers want to move to struggling school systems, they can work without years of additional schooling/training.
I've become a monster.
Person: Oh yeah, I'm expanding my spa and hoping to bring on a nurse practitioner and massage therapist to increase the range of services I can offer.
Me: <breaks through the wall> DO YOU WANT TO LEARN ABOUT OCCUPATIONAL LICENSING AND SCOPE OF PRACTICE???
A student just said to me "it was probably before your time, but have you heard of Pokemon?" ... just put me out of my misery. Send me out to pasture. I just grew three gray streaks of hair and contemplated buying a walking cane with that comment.
My new job
@WVU
"officially" starts tomorrow and I'm delighted to get started. It's going to be amazing to work with them all and I'm enthusiastic about all the cool programs and projects I will get to build and grow with my colleagues.
When I was a student, a prof once said to me "you're going to miss all the free time you had in grad school." I laughed because I could not imagine being more busy... three years and change out of school and I will admit, that professor was right.
Did you know that Certificate-of-Need restrictions on substance use disorder treatment facilities is linked with higher rates of infants born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome in the Medicaid population? Why do we have bed limits for critical treatments?
I joined the American Journal of Entrepreneurship as an Associate Editor. My purpose in this is not only to publish amazing papers but to update with the times- including the journal on lists, DOI for articles, website updates, submission portal, highlighting neat papers online.

Interesting note- professional Santas are a great example case of a professional organization self-regulating as opposed to government regulation. They have online and in-person Professional Santa Clause School, an optional registration and certification process, and conferences.
Waking up to an r&r at a premier journal: 🥰🥳💖
Remembering I have three other r&r's all due in the next six weeks that require new data collection and coding, with absolutely zero time, and three upcoming work trips on the books: 😵🤯☠
Please send spare time or good vibes.

My coauthor changed all my instances of "period space" to "period space space." I plan to replace their computer with a typewriter in protest.
Okay, but seriously, if you're considering a PhD- put UofSC on your list. They treat students so well and are such wonderful people. Prior to my own PhD, I was there for my bachelors and masters and I owe this department so much for their kindness (also for my empirical skills)

Check it out, I'm on FOX 2 News talking about the economic impact of job cuts in the St. Louis metro. Honestly, this was pretty fun. I'm so lucky to get to live and work in such an amazing community.

Sure, I get that. But that's why I treat the idea as supplementing the empirical results. I'm tired of reading papers where it is obvious that the author has never, in their entire lives, talked to a practitioner or consumer within that industry- especially rural healthcare.
WVU Day at the Legislature was a ton of fun. We got to tell many students, staffers, and representatives about our wonderful offerings and outreach in

Allowing military spouses to have their licenses recognized when they move to new states keeps them in the labor force. The reapplication process for a group that moves every 2-3 years is a high barrier, especially for nurses. Such a simple, yet extremely impactful, solution.
"Military spouse licensing: a case study of registered nurses near military bases"
"full recognition of military spouse licenses increases the probability of employment mobility by around 12%, while more restrictive reforms have the opposite effect"
@DeAngelisCorey
I'm kinda confused about why people are getting so angry with you over asking what is an interesting question. As a public finance economist who teaches externalities most days, this seems not an illogical question to ask.
*psssst* hey! Check out the newest member of the Journal of Regional Analysis & Policy editorial board. I'm so honored to give back to this amazing research community.
I somehow managed perfect teaching evaluations this semester with the main "improvement suggestion" being that the cat needs to be in more of the online videos. All of these comments are so kind after the difficult mid-semester COVID-19 shuffle. I really have the best students.
Heading down to hang out with the AMAZING faculty in the
@FMI_TTU

One of my SIUE students got an internship at the St. Louis Fed and sent me this amazing hoodie!!! This fantastic woman is a top tier researcher with so much passion. I'm so lucky to get to teach such amazing people who make the world a better place. I'm so proud of my students.
For West Virginia Day we found some small town escape rooms based on WV history near New River Gorge. One was Hatfield vs. McCoy and the other was a resort soviet-era bunker. Happy WV Day to all! Let's Go, Mountaineers. It's been a great first year working at WVU.

In updates that nobody asked for: I volunteered and got voted as the program director for one of our undergrad econ degrees. I'm excited, now I get to do one of my favorite parts of academia: admin work. (Not sarcastic, I'm militantly organized and love admin/leadership roles)
This rise in job switching to travel nurses should highlight to policymakers that we need to address the very limited interstate recognition of nursing licenses. This is a simple policy change that can drastically improve access and responses to disasters or health emergencies.
Some hospitals are offering once unheard-of signing bonuses—up to $40,000—for nurses who accept longer assignments, as high-paying contract jobs draw them away from permanent roles

Typically networking. But also, just letting people know you'll be in the area. For example, our speaker series doesn't have a supporting budget- so we can't fly people in. But if they are already in the St. Louis metro, we would love them come to visit and say hello!
@DeAngelisCorey
Half the things you listed require an occupational license, so we don't even get to freely choose those, only from the licensed ones... maybe we need more choice all around.
Today, one of our

presented our findings on physician practice growth within the IMLC to the IMLC Commission annual meeting as the invite lunch talk. What a big deal! Great job, Darwyyn, making a difference educating with research.

Students get excited when you seem excited. Be a little louder and more animated than normal, focus on the positive sides. And, oh! My students always like it when I interject with random odd facts. Like in taxation- "did you know Lady Gaga's meat dress was tax decutible???"
Very excited to present two papers at the Arkansas Center for Research in Economics. There will be a public lecture about my work analyzing occupational licensing costs and firm behavior. I will also be talking about occupational licensing effects on self-employment performance.

All the final exams are in and I am proud to say after hunting down a few students, sending out DVDs/hard copy packets, and helping students work with internet providers- I did not have a single student ghost or disappear from my roster during COVID-19! That was tough, I'm proud.
While sad packing up my work office, a letter showed up in my box from a student b/c the project they did in my local & state public course got them an internship in the governor's office and a full ride to law school. I needed that. I love that course. What awesome students.
FYI: as we expand, our name needed to change. Moving forward, we still go by Knee Center, but it stands for Knee Regulatory Research Center instead of the beloved Knee Center for the Study of Occupational Regulation.

I actually got on a PhD student for having excessive memes in their presentation... I guess if you live long enough, you see yourself become the villain.
I'm debating on starting a twitter post series where once I week or so I write up a summary of an important occupational licensing research paper. Would anyone be interested in that?
Reduced restrictions on doctors practicing over state lines, reduced restrictions on telehealth, curbside pickup to-go margaritas, publishers temporarily dropping paywalls, and holding office hours in pajama pants... maybe we should keep some of these changes when this is over.
