The Deep's race doesnt matter to the character, so they can change it without issue. Just like Ariel. Its an 'adaptation,' not meant to be 1:1

It's part of the Love Unlimited series. The entire point is to explore romantic relationships and those dynamics. It was story appropriate.
People just might not like the story itself or find the entire series unnecessary, but thats a diff problem.
