Very sad news that Galway boxer John Cooney has passed away a week since he was injured in his Ulster Hall fight. Condolences to John’s family and friends RIP.

Just saw the marvellous Bob Dylan biopic, 'A Complete Unknown.' Either ironically or deliberately he is still a complete enigma as the credits roll. Here's a piece I wrote about Dylan over twenty years ago.

My funny, brave and beautiful big brother Billy has died. Peacefully and comfortably thanks to the angels in aprons of City 6 North, his virtual home for some months now. What would we do without people like them? The laughter you gave will never leave me, Bill.

Perhaps more productive to deal with the issue as opposed to the person. “my patriotism is better than yours” doesn’t quite cut it.
Those who truly believe in a united Ireland need to do better than name-calling against fellow Irish simply because I, among many others, rejected violence & sought to work through the Irish government to bring peace & reconciliation to Ireland. I call that patriotism, not partitionism.

A bit much to unpack here maybe. Of course the key is that we all have the responsibility to persuade and work for a new Ireland not just northern nationalists.
Like many of my @dfatirl colleagues I spent a lifetime seeking to promote peace & reconciliation in Ireland. I will pit my record of patriotism against yours anytime. I also have my grandfather’s war of independence medal on my wall. I am a constitutional nationalist. You?

Looks like an inherently partitionist mindset.
Unity requires persuasion rather than wishful thinking. For me, the most potent unity argument will be the success of the Irish state which needs to demonstrate its capacity to handle the challenges of unity. Northern nationalists have a job to do in persuading others in NI of the attractiveness & viability of unity.

Sorry at the sad news of the passing of Anna Lo former Alliance MLA, respected community worker & leader of the Chinese Welfare Association. I saw first hand her dedication to the Chinese community, good community relations, respect for community diversity and rights for all. RIP
