Hello mama Africa!
I just moved to Cape Town for a year-long sabbatical after a long time in the Scandinavia. I will be researching and lecturing at the School of Economics, the University of Cape Town as a visiting Professor until early next year.
I already like the vibe 😉
I was honored to participate in a panel discussing how to build research networks in Africa” at the
@WorldBank
DIME workshop in Cape Town.
I shared
@EfD_initiative
’s two-decade-long experience building research and academic capacity in low-income countries.
A big thank you for the econ faculty at
@aberdeenuni
@UoABusSchool
for inviting me to give a seminar and visit their department. They have a great group of engaged economists.
Aberdeen is a beautiful city - pretty much the entire city is built from carved granite stones.
I had the great privilege of sharing my experience conducting RCTs in developing countries with a group of highly motivated policymakers and postdocs based in Sub-Saharan African countries at UCT today. A big thumbs up to
@EfD_initiative
and SETI for organizing it.
A big congratulations 👏👏 to Dr. Gidisa Lechisa, who just defended his PhD thesis in economics under the University of Gothenburg—Addis Ababa University collaborative PhD program. It was a great joy to supervise him.
A big thank you 🙏🙏🙏 to Stefan Dercon (
@gamblingondev
) and Pramila Krishnan for generously hosting us (

participants) at their home last evening. We enjoyed the food, drinks, and catching up with colleagues.
It keeps us coming every year :)
I’m in Southern Nigeria giving a week-long training to colleagues at

on RCTs. Great 👍👍 for
@EfD_initiative
for organizing it. I’m impressed by the engagement of the participants despite the harsh heat – 34 d.C, 53% humidity – feels like 39 degree Celsius.
Important advise for Early-Career researchers not to fall into what I prefer to call the "Too-many-projects-trap", which I fell into when I embarked on my career.

The challenges African researchers face due to resource constraints are immense. Africa needs a "Research and Innovation Fund" to promote scientific research and collaboration.
Only 2.7% of articles published between 2015 and 2022 featured collaborations between scientists in higher-income and lower-income countries”. Africa’s share is super tiny. Funders and publishers should address this unfairness!
