Memorable Chicago morning ‘Biking the Drive’ with
@ChicagosMayor
. I look forward to working with the Mayor to make Chicago the safest and most friendly bike City in the world. 🚴 🌎
@activetrans
43rd Ward: This morning we broke ground on the Dickens Greenway, a “contra-flow” bike lane on Dickens Avenue to connect the westernmost point in the Ward (Magnolia/Racine), to the easternmost point (near the lakefront).
Today, I introduced the “Stop Hate Flyering” ordinance, aiming to combat & deter the rise of hate flyering across the City. I want to make one thing clear: hate has no home in Chicago. For those who choose to commit acts of hate in our communities – you will be held accountable.
Our deepest condolences are with the entire Chicago Fire Department and Lincoln Park’s Engine 55. Please join me in standing with the brave folks in the CFD, and praying for the family of the firefighter who died in the line of duty. Drew Price’s sacrifice will never be forgotten
On behalf of the Fire Commisioner, it is my sad duty to report the passing of our member injured this morning at 2430 Lincoln. Commissioner Nance-Holt will address media at Illinois Masonic. About 945, subject to change.

Congratulations to
@DePaulU
on their 125th year anniversary! DePaul has been a staple both in the 43rd Ward & the whole City. We are pleased to recognize January 25th 2023 as “DePaul Day” to commemorate this milestone and celebrate with Pres. Rob Manuel and DePaul students! 🎉
Tonight I attended police roll call to thank the joint team of officers from the 18th & 19th Districts. We are grateful for the additional resources and coordination in the 43rd Ward to keep DePaul area students and families safe.
Dickens will be fitted with sidewalk bump-outs, speed humps, & raised crosswalks. In addition, the vehicular speed limit has been lowered from 30mph to 20mph, and a "soft landing" has been designed for the Greenway's ending at Stockton near the Zoo.
Today, I joined neighbors to honor the life and sacrifice of firefighter Drew Price at his memorial service. Drew was a strong member of the CFD community and a dedicated public servant in the 43rd Ward. Please keep the Price family & the CFD in your thoughts & prayers.
We thank
@ChicagoDOT
and former-Commissioner
@gia_biagi
for their leadership and vision towards complete streets. I am excited to strap on my helmet and host a safety ride with the community down the newly minted greenway later this fall!
From the Dickens Greenway (and similar amenities to come in the ward), to our
@cta
trains and buses, and to our roads, smarter connectivity in our dense ward is a top priority for our 43rd Ward office.
Coming out takes courage and happens every day.
Whether at a law firm or in City Council, I’m proud of who I am and hope the visibility of all LGBTQ people shines through on

The 43rd Ward Office is overflowing with food and goods on the first day of our donation drive for Chicago’s new migrant neighbors.
Great to meet dozens of neighbors and express gratitude for their generosity.
Come by tomorrow 11a-1p!
Enough is enough. My heart breaks for those affected by this senseless tragedy. We all must speak up and fight back against rising hate crimes against the LGBTQ+ and other marginalized communities. And we must keep fighting to get guns off of our streets.
Filming will be taking place in our Ward tomorrow through Saturday on the 800 block of W Armitage. Please be advised of no parking and tow zone signage.
This evening I spoke to
@ABC7Chicago
about the recent wave in robberies in our community and my continued call for increased patrol throughout our ward.
As Vice Chair of the Committee on Environmental Protection, I am honored to lead the push of our city into its green future. This weekend my office and I participated in Earth Day events around the 43rd Ward.
This afternoon at North Ave. Beach shots were fired after an altercation between a group of people. Police were on scene and quickly dealt with the situation to mitigate any danger to residents enjoying the beautiful afternoon.
At this time, no injuries have been reported.

📸 Week In Review: We saw our Ward Superintendent in action working tirelessly to execute extended street sweeps.
I also had the privilege of welcoming Santa to the 43rd Ward at the Lincoln Common Tree Lighting. We bonded over how much black coffee we both drink these days! ☕️🎅
Yesterday, we hosted
@chicagosamir
for Rotating City Hall. Samir visited local businesses, and spoke to community and business leaders around the 43rd Ward. Below is a 🧵 of our day...
Congrats to Ald. Anabel Abarca!
It’s a relief that I’m no longer the newest member of City Council (a feeling I’m sure Alds. Lee and Scott felt before me).
I’m looking forward to working with you and sharing the handful of tips I’ve picked up in the last few months. 📝
📸 Week In Review: I spent some time speaking on a panel with fellow Alders at a
@LPCC09
event, met some great neighbors at Coffee with the Commander at the Walgreens on Armitage, and finished the week at City Hall for the Police Department and Board of Ethics Budget Hearings!
The 43rd Ward office at 2523 N. Halsted is officially reopen! We are back to our normal business hours of M-F 9am-5pm. We are excited to welcome you into our newly renovated space.
At this time our office is not able to sell Guest Parking Passes as the City Clerk’s system is experiencing difficulties. We will update when their system is back up.
Thank you to the officers of the 18th and 19th District and all the neighbors who attended our Conversation with the Commanders event at DePaul University! This event was great for neighbors to meet the brave officers that serve the 43rd Ward community.
As we begin the holiday season with a food-filled day dedicated to reflecting on the goodness in our lives, I want to wish everyone well and share a few ways I express gratitude. Happy Thanksgiving!
I’ve been in constant communication with
@Chicago_Police
Commander Hein about last night’s police-involved shooting in Lincoln Park.

I’m deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Cook County Clerk Karen Yarbrough. Clerk Yarbrough was a trailblazer and leaves behind a legacy and impact that will certainly live on. I send my condolences to her family and loved ones. May she rest in peace.
In this wide-ranging dialogue, we discussed police pensions, preparation for large-scale summer events, bolstering the work of the Detectives Bureau, and violent crime prevention and violence interruption measures.
We reiterated our office’s support of the 18th & 19th District’s work & commitment to partnering with the Mayor & his team to keep the 43rd Ward safe. Thank you to
@ChicagosMayor
and
@CPDSupt
for following through on their commitment to visit the 43rd Ward!
We ended at Soul Prime Chicago where community leaders heard from the Mayor and Superintendent directly on the measures they are taking to both make Chicago safe and make Chicagoans feel safe.
The program featured a panel discussion about the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) with experts from the White House and U.S. Department of Treasury, learning how cities like Chicago can work with the Federal Government to help protect our environment.
#EarthDay

It was so great to see neighbors coming together to help our Ward (like former Alder Vi Daley). This morning I joined Mayor Johnson and the Department of Environment for an Earth Day Celebration.
This afternoon, an off duty CPD Sergeant fired a firearm at two offenders in the alley of 2700 N Halsted. On duty officers responded quickly but no arrest has been made at this time.
It was such a pleasure having
@chicagosamir
visit the 43rd Ward and meet with our great and many community advocates and leaders. Thanks for joining us on a tour of the Ward I am proud to call home and represent in City Council.
There is a long history of hate flyering targeting various groups. As a gay man, I have witnessed these types of incidents targeting the LGBTQ+ community and other diverse groups. It’s time to stop hate flyering – and I’m committed to getting this done.
The threat of a monetary fine as punishment can serve as a strong deterrent for the perpetrators of these flyerings. The legislation prohibits placing these hate flyers on vehicles, doorsteps, and the public way and imposes a fine of up to $1,000.
After the vote, I took the CTA red line back to the 43rd Ward like many days, I couldn’t stop thinking about how we can get the CTA back on track - particularly improving safety and timeliness - and to connect ALL of Chicago... (3/4)
Police are actively investigating and per protocol the Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating. My office is in communication with the CPD and will share more information once we have it.

in the way the CTA was intended to (and is set up to do, as it has received so many awards for). With budget season at the rearview mirror, excited to brainstorm with my fellow Alders on how we can do so (CC:

Check out CHI 311 to address non-emergency services. You can create new service requests, check the status of existing requests (such as on timing and completion) and snap a photo of an issue to submit it with a request to improve location accuracy.
We began at
@Pyarandco
, meeting with the owner & discussing increased safety in the business areas and the vibrancy of the commercial corridors & residential streets in the neighborhood. We continue to advocate for beat integrity which is key to the safety of 43rd Ward residents.

The police have told me that a suspect is in custody.
This is yet another reminder of the importance of enacting community policing policies and ensuring we have adequate staffing levels in our district, especially at hot spots during the summer.
The day started at Lincoln Park High School, where we hosted a roundtable discussion with administrators, and LSC members to understand their investment priorities and needs for the High School and surrounding Middle and Elementary Schools. 📚
I am in regular communications with Mayor Johnson’s administration and the CPD, ensuring our community has the resources we need to stay safe and enjoy the summer.
Today we passed the 2023 Chicago City Budget which included massive investment in public safety, an advance pay-down of City’s pension funds, prioritization of mental health (to citizens, workers and the police), created an Office of Climate and Environmental Equity... (1/4)

This is horrifying. Please help police identify the man in this video, and also consider supporting organizations that provide services for abused animals like this puppy.
In this innovative project,
@leobuild

@SteppenwolfThtr
to meet with their CEO and hear about the wonderful work they do for the Chicago community. We met
@TheChiFirstLady
to tour their new theatre with us.

Like we must do with all marginalized communities, make a strong pledge that their fight is your's too.
I remember being at
@Sidetrack
in Boystown on the night that 49 people were killed at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando.
A friend and I were leaving as the news alert came across our phones.
Even states away, the feeling was a total sense of fear.

hosted our business leaders lunch, where we discussed local retail and restaurant trends with the help of
@LPCC09
. The spirited conversation was accompanied by breathtaking views of our magnificent shoreline.
In the LGBTQ+ community, gathering places like Club Q, Pulse and Sidetrack are vital as safe spaces for community members (both new and less new) to feel accepted, understood and safe.
