Alaska House Bill 69 would increase the per-pupil funding from $5,960 to $8,510 over three years. That’s a $1,800 jump (or 43% increase). The added cost to the state would be nearly $1.5 billion, with no reform measures for Alaska's failing public schools.

Hand-count-ONLY advocates in the Kenai Peninsula Borough had until 5 p.m. on Jan. 30 to turn in an additional 190 signatures for their ballot petition. It appears they have more than enough to put the question to voters in the upcoming October election.

Registered Kenai Borough voters can sign the hand-count ballot petition at Ammo Can Coffee in Soldotna (35559 Kenai Spur Hwy). Those who wish to sign can do so during business hours (6 a.m.-5 p.m.) on Jan. 29, and up until about 2 p.m. on Jan. 30.
