Florida school districts can legally require their students to wear masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19, a judge ruled Friday, saying Gov. Ron DeSantis overstepped his authority when he issued an executive order banning such mandates.
County Chair Robert Hutchinson and Gainesville Mayor Lauren Poe announced today that as of midnight, March 24, it is time to shelter in place and stay at home. Only essential businesses should be open, and only essential errands should be made.
The current positive COVID-19 test total is 21. We are assuming that we have community transmission. At this point whether it is travel related or community transmitted is not pertinent as all cases are equally dangerous. Moving forward, we will just report case totals.
The 1 person per 1,000 sq.ft. requirement is back in place. As we continue to understand the Governor's Executive Order, it is clear that we can make this decision at the local level.

West Newberry Road (SR 26) is closed in both directions near the Gilchrist County line due to a large sinkhole opening. The sinkhole is 35 feet wide, 15 feet deep, and expanding. It is currently on the shoulder, but the road has been determined to be unstable.
Alachua County's Emergency Orders remain in place, will be enforced, and must be followed. As the Governor's order continues to evolve and more clarification is offered, we will communicate any changes to our Orders.

Poe Springs Park will reopen this Saturday, Aug. 31!
The park will be open from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. all week. There is a seasonal entrance fee of $6 per vehicle or $1 per person for walk-in/bicycle entry through September. Fees are waived for individuals with disabilities.

gives OSHA protections to workers and clarifies gathering rules. It creates an anonymous line for employees who believe that they are working in unsafe conditions. It clarifies that religious services are included in gathering restrictions.

A 69-y.o. male, non-Fl resident visiting from Europe tested positive for COVID-19 in Alachua County. The Florida Department of Health has announced 25 new positive cases of coronavirus disease in Fl and the death of a Florida resident in California.
So, this is predicted to be a rainy windy summer-like day. No government offices closed, no schools closed, no shelters opened, no sandbag locations. We'll keep you posted if there is a change, but for now, it's looking good.
