Congratulations to the President-elect, H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi. I also congratulate the current President of Somaliland, H.E. Muse Bihi Abdi, who held free elections and confidently accepted the results. The Republic of Somaliland is a democratic country, and the leaders are elected by the one-person, one-vote system. I commend the professional work done by the NEC @SLNECHQ. I also congratulate the three elected national parties: WADDANI, KAAH, and KULMIYE. #somalilandelections2024

Historical Ties and Strategic Partnerships: The Need to Forge a New and Strategic Relationship Between India and Somaliland _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ The Republic of Somaliland remains determined in its pursuit of international recognition and is actively engaging with global partners to strengthen its diplomatic and economic ties. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Somaliland proudly highlights its evolving relationship with the Republic of India. Although unofficial, these relations exemplify the power of diplomacy and soft influence, rooted in centuries of shared interests in trade, security, and cultural exchange. Today, these historical bonds are being revitalized through economic cooperation and shared security objectives. Historically, Somaliland and India have enjoyed deep diplomatic and economic exchanges dating back to ancient maritime routes that connected the Horn of Africa to the Indian subcontinent. These early trade networks fostered a relationship that has endured for centuries, built on the exchange of goods, culture, and ideas. In the modern era, the Indian diaspora in Somaliland continues to contribute to the country’s development, reinforcing the cultural and social ties that have long underpinned this enduring relationship. This form of cultural diplomacy demands a strong foundation for more formalized economic and diplomatic engagement between the two nations. At the heart of Somaliland’s strategic significance is Berbera Port, a vital and strategic asset in the Horn of Africa located along one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors. Both Somaliland and India share a common interest in ensuring the security and stability of maritime routes linking the Gulf of Aden to the Indian Ocean, essential for global trade. Cooperation in maritime security, counter-piracy operations, and safeguarding international shipping lanes offers a natural extension of their shared responsibilities. India’s involvement in these areas would not only enhance regional security but also secure critical trade routes, solidifying its role as a key player in maintaining peace and stability. Somaliland’s quest for international recognition is a cornerstone of its foreign policy, with peace and stability at the forefront of its diplomatic efforts. India, with its long history of strategic diplomacy, is in a unique position to support Somaliland’s sovereignty and recognition efforts on the global stage. As both nations navigate a world shaped by complex geopolitical challenges, India’s support could be instrumental in addressing critical issues in the Horn of Africa. The Somaliland Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes the need for greater dialogue and cooperation between Somaliland and India, recognizing the untapped potential for mutual growth and prosperity. As Somaliland continues its journey toward international recognition, India’s historical and strategic alignment presents an opportunity to deepen a partnership that transcends traditional diplomatic boundaries. This relationship, grounded in shared cultural and security interests, has the potential to reshape the geopolitical dynamics of the red sea, Indian ocean and beyond. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation of the Republic of Somaliland reaffirms its commitment to collaborative diplomacy and looks forward to strengthening relations with India in the pursuit of collective goals of peace, security, and prosperity.
