If we don't give companies like Replika a reason to bake guardrails into their products they just won't do it. It'll take public pressure and government action to put measures in place that meaningfully protect regular people from all these potential harms. (9/9)

The companies leading on AI have voluntarily made *quite a few* commitments over the years. Letting OpenAI bail on its own by converting to a for-profit sets a precedent that other companies can do the same without cost or oversight. That is bad for the public and for our future.
🚨 Encode filed an amicus brief last Friday arguing to the court that blocking OpenAI's for-profit conversion protects the public interest. The brief has already picked up support from leading AI researchers including Nobel Laureate @geoffreyhinton. The court should require OpenAI to adhere to its founding mission of making sure advanced AI benefits the public. See more details below 🔽

Proud of our work here to tackle this issue with not only new legislation, but direct contact with the districts that have a chance to end this crisis. Katherine He (@katxhe) and Shreya Sampath have done excellent work writing the brief and executing on the campaign.
Over the summer we began working with deepfake victim Francesca Mani to push school districts around the country to update their codes of conduct to include deepfake nudes. Today we published our brief, informed by conversations with victims and experts, that has informed that work.
