Don’t worry, we don’t read any of it.
..when I finish this project
..when I submit that paper
..when I get this degree
..when I complete this task
..when I climb that ladder
..when I win this award
The list is endless and the future is always busy.
Don't forget to live now.
Me: Can I get reimbursed for this?
University: Here's the form. You've just embarked on a long and arduous journey and we will do everything in our power to stop you. Good luck.
If applicants with 2 co-authored papers aren’t making it to the top 10 of a PhD applicant list, I’d wager that those in the top 10 are bringing a good deal of privilege, connections, and opportunities. I'm really not sure that 'passion' is doing any of the heavy lifting here.
My jaws keep dropping as I go through 70 PhD applicant files. People w/ 2 coauthored papers & an interesting solo writing sample don’t even make it to the top 10 in my pile.
The level of knowledge, research experience & passion these kids bring to the table is just remarkable! 🤩
I overheard PhD folk subtly mocking undergraduate students, please don't do this. Don't forget that we all started somewhere. Undergraduates are the future, so treat them like it. Bring them into the conversation, help them feel respected & valued as people & as researchers.

Sharing that you don't want or need to use the title "Dr" is a privilege not everyone has. Without the title, some (particularly under-represented folk) aren't seen, taken seriously, or believed. Remember this if you find yourself questioning why others proudly display it.
Coming from a working class background, I remember feeling that my lack of cultural capital meant that I didn't belong in academic spaces. I would then go home & folk would talk to me as if I thought I was better than them now & didn't belong there. In-between two worlds.
Presentation tip: find the nodders (those who nod along) & look at them frequently. Use them as your comfort area(s) and return to them when you need some kind of feedback. Gaze out into the sea of nothingness but know that you can return at any point. Thank you nodders.
Shoutout to anyone that moves to another country to follow their dreams. Adapting to lang/env/cultural differences whilst studying/researching is mind blowing. It can be difficult for those who have never done this to appreciate just how big that is, it's incredibly impressive.
It's not okay to offer funding where the recipient uses their own money first and is reimbursed later. This puts serious pressure on those in less privileged positions. Many struggle (silently) or lose out completely. Reduce inequity by offering resources up front.

Postdoctoral students and academic researchers at the University of California said they will return to work on Monday after ratifying a new contract. But workers who help teach undergraduates and assign grades remain on strike.

In academia we need to..
normalize rest
normalize self-care
normalize mental health care
normalize taking breaks
normalize struggle and rejection
normalize diversity
normalize not being machines
normalize emotion
normalize being human.
The real academic writing test is learning to appropriately balance your use of "moreover", "however", "therefore", "furthermore", "hence", and "thus".

Tip: if you can't access a paper for whatever reason, tweet

together with the title or link. Someone may be able to access the paper and share it with you.
The real measure of academic excellence is mastering the strategic use of conjunctive adverbs: "moreover", "however", "therefore", "hence", "thus", "furthermore", "accordingly", "consequently", and "henceforth".
Most grad students don't need another thing for the CV. They need more money so that they can comfortably do what they're already doing with less stress.
Professional workflow
- start reading a paper
- tab out 35 more from the references
- save each one
- send all to a folder
- name that folder "to read"
- never open that folder again
