Is it a bone? 🦴 Is it a tusk? 🦄 Is it a forbidden cigar? 🚬 No! These are #Baculites, a genus of extinct #mollusk #cephalopods ("head-feet" in Greek), related to ammonites (also extinct), squids, octopus, cuttlefish, and nautilus. #FossilFriday

The colorful replicas that you see in these pictures are NOT, in fact, plastic zucchini, but a representation of ancient #echinoderms. These models were made decades ago, for teachers to show students different skeleton plates in these extinct groups. #fossilfriday #invertpaleo

#Crustaceans are #arthropods; they present a hard exoskeleton; jointed, paired appendages; and three body regions (head, thorax, and abdomen.) The earliest crustacean-like fossils were found in the Cambrian Period (542-488 million years ago). #FossilFriday

Today we can share pictures, videos or even 3D images, but 200 years ago, it was not that easy. When describing #trilobite fauna, Jacob Green (1790-1841) came up with the idea of furnishing his papers with exact replicas of the specimens. #fossilfriday #invertpaleo
