After today, you will not be permitted to protest in NSW unless you are protesting in a state-sanctioned place, on a state-sanctioned topic, and you have the prior permission of the state. This is a terrible day for democracy.
#nswpol
Right now in NSW Parliament I'm moving to overturn the anti-protest regulations that can make protesting on any road and at virtually any notable location in Sydney, including Town Hall and on Oxford St, a crime punishable by 2 years in prison.
Why didn’t the NSW police send officers to SA to take Kate’s statement?
@ShoebridgeMLC
just successfully demanded that the NSW govt hand over the documents in relation to that decision - we’ll find out more in 21 days.
Capitalism has no place in the provision of essential public services. We must urgently nationalise all the services that are threatening to close their doors due to lack of profits. Hospitals, aged care, child care - we can't do without them. What else would you add to the list?
Greens, Labor and rest of x-bench want parliament to sit next week for essential business (incl passing a bill to allow online sittings in future), but govt are refusing to attend. They’re arguing that although supermarkets can open with a covid-safe plan, parliament can’t…
It never ceases to amaze me how men can be ‘new’ and ‘changed’ so quickly while women are left traumatised for life as a result of those men’s actions.
Absolutely disgusted to see NSW Parliament voting through a bill that would allow police to stop, detain and search anyone convicted of a drug offence in the last 10 years, even where they were under 18 at the time.
The highly profitable fossil fuel industry receives $16bn every day in govt subsidies. While we scramble to survive dangerous weather events, our governments continue to put cash into these profiteers’ pockets. We must ban new coal, gas and oil projects + nationalise our energy.
Today I’m introducing our Bill to protect sex workers from discrimination by amending the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act.
This is long overdue. Everyday sex workers face stigma and are refused services or denied housing solely for their chosen occupation.

The armed police raid on a private property in the Blue Mountains over the weekend, to arrest climate campaigners under suspicion of planning a peaceful protest action, was an astonishing and brazen overreach of new police powers - powers that must be rolled back.
The Greens do not support the suspension of the NSW Parliament. The cost of living and climate crises don’t stop when a monarch dies, and nor should democracy. There is so much work to be done for our communities and they must always be our priority.
#nswpol
Disgusted. Only 5 NSW upper house MPs vote in favour of the Greens resolution to declare a climate emergency and transition urgently to 100% renewables. Shame.

Horses do not "break down". Anthony Van Dyck's fetlock was fractured and he was killed. He was not a car who had a mechanical failure, he was a living being pushed beyond his limits. The language we use matters, and the animals we abuse for entertainment and profit deserve better
It is a very sad day for democracy when the Berejiklian government can stop the majority of the members of the NSW Legislative Council from sitting. Democracy is not optional - holding the govt to account is essential business. Disgraceful.
#NSWpol
There has been a disconcerting trend in this state and across the nation towards authoritarian oppression of civil society organisations and citizens peacefully struggling for a better world.
You know what’s to blame for inaction on climate policy? Labor’s love-in with the fossil fuel industry. You can’t take millions in donations from fossil fuel companies, refuse calls for a ban on new climate-destroying coal and gas projects and then blame everyone but yourselves.
Between 2009-2019, the Australian mining and resources sector donated $136.8 million to politicians and political parties. What you or I think about climate change is irrelevant when big money is allowed to dictate public policy.
BREAKING: I'm so pleased to say that the Greens have just secured an important reform that will finally put an end to the practice of allowing victim-survivors to be directly cross-examined by their abusers.
Democratic rights and liberties are hard won and must be judiciously maintained, because once lost they can be difficult if not impossible to win back. We have the opportunity today to hopefully walk back this anti-democratic trend.
Don’t worry, the hysteria about people not getting to appointments, unacceptable inconvenience and lives being put at risk only applies when protesters block the Bridge, not when movie stars do it.
It is unacceptable for the NSW police not to record why sexual assault claims are withdrawn. We keep banging on about this in parliament and have never received a satisfactory answer - I will follow up again this week.
Of all violent crimes, sexual assault is the least reported, investigated, prosecuted with the lowest convictions. And it’s getting worse - why are more women withdrawing reports & more police dismissing them? Why does it vary so much by state? My

David Morris of

Labor, the time to withdraw your support is now. It’s time to roll back these regulations, to reaffirm your commitment to your values for democracy, civil society and struggle for a better world. It is not for government to determine what is legitimate protest.
How many of us have made ourselves smaller, quieter, less approachable, less ourselves, all to try and reduce our chances of being sexually harassed or abused? On the street, in schools, in workplaces, in our own homes? We shouldn’t be the ones shouldering this burden.

You could criticise an economic system that creates the extreme wealth, over-consumption and exploitation that is destroying our planet or you could adopt the fantasy that our current system would be just fine if only there were fewer people. In 2020 the Greens know better.
@EDOLawyers
@humanrightsHRLC
Sydney Branch Secretary of
@MaritimeUnionAU
Paul Keating said: “The very reasons communities and the trade union have opposed these anti-protest laws is for the very reasons like what occurred on the weekend with these raids."
@EDOLawyers
Alice Drury of
@humanrightsHRLC
said “Governments should expect people to continue to come together to voice their concern and demand action. Politicians should resist the knee-jerk response of criminalising protests because it’s frustrating or disruptive”
The NSW Coalition govt says it does not intend to stop protests - but only if the protests are ‘legal’, ‘legitimate’, conducted in certain places they’ve identified, not ‘inconvenient’ or ‘disruptive’, and have been pre-approved by police and owners of impacted facilities…
Peacefully protest on the streets and face a $22,000 fine or 2 years in jail. Violently ram your car into protesters and get a $465 fine and 3 demerit points. Says everything you need to know about this political crackdown on climate activists.
Paul goes on: "This isn’t just over-reach, this is the anti-democratic nature of the law that creates space for such overreach and infringes on our democratic rights that so many community groups and organisations and the trade union movement in NSW has voiced its outrage about."
Labor were also at pains to emphasise their support for ‘peaceful protest’. Blockade Australia climate defenders have no history of violence, and yet they are finding themselves on the receiving end of a fascist imposition of state violence under the auspices of these laws.
Labor's trust has been misplaced. Just today the government announced their intention to seek to further restrict and criminalise the right to strike - new laws that Labor has said they will oppose.
We live in a secular society. But every day proceedings in NSW Parliament commence with the Lord’s Prayer. A religious ritual that doesn’t reflect the diverse and multicultural beliefs of our state.
BREAKING: Parliamentary Inquiry unanimously recommends
#CoerciveControl
be criminalised in NSW. I’m relieved and delighted that our Committee has today published a report that recognises that criminalising coercive control will save lives.
The position of our leading civil society organisations could not be more clear. These regulations must be immediately repealed as a dangerous attack on our democratic rights.
When these laws were rushed through in April, Labor said they expected Opposition’s expectation that the regulations would provide a targeted approach, that would be used judiciously and cautiously. This clearly hasn't been the case.
The Liberal National Government has been given free reign and a blank cheque to impose their will, through coercive police control, on the civil freedoms of people in this state.
We must vigorously defend our right to fight for a better world, because as Frederick Douglass so eloquently said, “if there is no struggle, there is no progress. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never has and it never will.”
@DavidShoebridge
Last week in parliament I again put up a disallowance to roll back the worst of these anti-protest laws and again Labor joined with the Coalition to vote against the right to peacefully protest. 😡
Spent the day reading through hundreds of pages of submissions for tomorrow’s
#CoerciveControl
inquiry hearing. The quality of submissions from the DV sector is super impressive given the short time-frame given. Champions! Thank you so much.✨🙏
@MlcHurst
is now speaking in support of my disallowance of these draconian regulations and against the extraordinary police overreach weaponised against climate activists over the weekend.
So today I moved my motion to replace the Lord’s Prayer, as read at the beginning of each day in the NSW Legislative Council, with a minute of silence in which to reflect on our responsibilities to the people of NSW.
Imagine trying to escape an abusive relationship when your partner is a cop with a gun and his workmates will be the ones to investigate your complaint. We need urgent reform of police processes in NSW so every victim-survivor can get the help they need to escape domestic abuse.
How can we have any confidence in our legal system, which we know continually fails sexual assault victim-survivors, when the federal Attorney General is the subject of an uninvestigated rape allegation? Of course there needs to be an independent inquiry into this issue.
We now have evidence of widespread sexual harassment and reports of sexual assault in both federal and South Australian parliaments. I have asked the NSW parliament to proactively survey all staff rather than just assuming that we don’t have a similar problem.
@justinrfield
@SueHigginson_
says the fact that this Parliament is ignoring the pleas of the dozens of civil society, union and human rights organisations says something has gone very wrong with our democracy.
Emma says it well: "It is massive government overreach without any legislative basis. And of course it doesn't end there ... they can continue to chop and change the regulations whenever there is protest actions they don't like."
Compare the inconvenience of being stuck in traffic because of a protest to the inconvenience of being stuck in your roof cavity as flood waters rise in the middle of the night. These things are not the same.
Sue: "I happen to know hundreds of remarkable people in our community who have participated in civil disobedience, and I can tell this House that not one of them have done it without significant compromise to their own life."
My Greens colleague
@SueHigginson_
and I have urgently written to the Police Minister calling for a stop to the extraordinary police interrogations of peaceful climate-sympathetic residents happening right now across the state. For the full media release:
👏Well done to everyone who has worked so hard to make this happen! Next step is to make sure it is implemented carefully and in consultation with a broad range of stakeholders. Looking forward to working to make this law the best it can be.
“The fight for democracy and justice and the fight against environmental breakdown are one and the same. Do not allow those who have caused this crisis to define the limits of political action.”
@SueHigginson_
: "They took it upon themselves to inconvenience themselves and perhaps others too because it was the right thing to do ... They stood up to signal a warning."
Labor's John Graham, who I quoted earlier tonight when he spoke in April about the importance of ensuring these laws don't result in overreach, has now told Parliament that Labor is opposing my disallowance motion. How shameful.
I had a little operation on my heart on Friday and I’m on bed rest for a while. Maya is taking very good care of me. I’ll never cease to be amazed at medical science and the nurses, doctors and hospital staff keeping people healthy every day - legends all of them.
Not surprisingly, most people think the government has a responsibility to end poverty. “60 per cent of people believed the Government should provide a guaranteed minimum income for all people, regardless of whether they had a job or not.”

It breaks my heart to think of all the women and children who have been unable to get help because of govt decisions to deny sufficient funding to the DV sector while giving away billions in pork barrelling and ‘grants for mates’. 🙁💔

We are now dividing on my disallowance to overturn the first Regulation, the Crimes Amendment (Major Facilities) Regulation 2022. This one targets protest at train stations, ferry terminals, power stations, and a heap of other locations across the state.

A bill to decriminalise abortion in NSW passed through the state's lower house on Thursday.
The night before,
@AbigailBoydMLC
rose to speak in the upper house, where debate on the legislation had run for more than 30 hours over five sitting days.
Story:
I’ve just moved an amendment to the NSW anti-protest law to ensure that protests organised in the ordinary way under the Summary Offences Act aren’t criminalised. If rejected, the only protests allowed will be state-sanctioned protests.
#nswpol
Under these regulations, the 'major facilities' you're not allowed to protest are just about every usual peaceful protest location in the state, including train stations like Central, Martin Place, and Town Hall. And then 'major road' means every road (EVERY ROAD) in metro Sydney
The fight isn't over however - the Greens will continue to fight to overturn these draconian laws, and will continue to stand in opposition to them in the streets.
BREAKING!!! The NSW Government has just moved an amendment that we prohibit direct cross-examination of a

Parliament just passed a motion congratulating a man for growing a giant pumpkin, but rejected my motion calling for a ban on cruel puppy farming. 🤷🏻♀️
He said in April: “It is quite broad legislation, but the Government has been quite narrow when it has described how it will use it. The Opposition trusts that is the case, given the Government’s assurances. We will hold the Government to them.” Oops, I guess not!
There are 9 flights of stairs between the chamber and my office.
@ShoebridgeMLC
has challenged me to go up and down these stairs between every one of the 249 divisions Pauline Hanson’s One Nation are pushing for their amends on the renewable energy bill. Game on.
I don't believe for one second that Labor thought this would be the case when they voted for the original Bill, but they won't vote to overturn the regulations.

In NSW, sentencing for perpetrators of child sexual abuse can be lessened based on their ‘good character.’ Often this means no prison time.
Honoured today to present the Your Reference Ain’t Relevant Campaign petition to Parliament to fix this broken law.
These laws will continue to be used as a weapon by the state to legitimise armed espionage, surveillance activities, and militarised assaults on peaceful climate activists.
