What if it were possible to deliver every cancer treatment at home? At Luminate, we've raised a $15m Series A (led by @ArtisVentures) to do just that👇

Dr McCarthy is getting more national recognition now, but for years he’s been a tireless advocate for Irish cancer patients. The public sector in Ireland gets a lot of criticism on this platform. Michael is proof that smart, hardworking people are fighting to improve it.

This is an excellent summary of how to hire in health/bio. As a product-oriented founder, it’s tempting to ignore HR work as a distraction. After 10+ people, the organisation is the product!

I talked with founders who built companies from 3 to over 150 employees and I think a good way to scale hiring is to break down the process into 3 different stages.

In 50 years, we will look back at the move to take healthcare budget decisions out of the hands of clinical experts as the single biggest public policy failure in Ireland, bar none. H/t to Dr @mccarthymt7 with an excellent summary as always.

I agree with @MichaelodwyerMD This is not a political point. If a politician promises to solve healthcare challenges, even those that are relatively easy to solve, and deserve to be solved, it is important to work out first whether or not they actually understand the basic nature of the issue the promise to fix. For example: The Interlace clinical trial for curable cervical cancer has now been published This clinical trial demonstrates that it is possible to increase the rate of cure of locally advanced cervical cancer from 72% to 80% by adding 6 doses of weekly chemotherapy before chemoradiotherapy. The cost of the drugs per patient is €300-400. Until July 2024, the use of low cost drugs for new treatment indications in the @HSELive was clearly at the discretion of the treating consultant. Since then, consultants must seek approval from the HSE Senior Leadership Team, via their Regional Executive Officer, through a process that has not yet been established. It also requires ~180 extra treatment slots per year. This is doable, if we could actually effectively use our allocated staff nurse WTE, including backfill for maternity leave. The reality of this is an endless series of business cases and relentless advocation for countless layers of executive approval, to fill existing, allocated posts. If a politician can demonstrate to me they understand these layers of redundant requirements that are put in front of clinicians trying to simply fulfill the terms of their contract and treat cancer, even with low cost drugs, and have a credible plan to effect change, they would have my vote. I haven’t heard it yet.
